I've decided that I want to (finally) cut the IG cord but I don't want to lose all of the posts I've saved. Does anyone know if there is a way to bulk download saved IG posts? I know I can save them one at a time but that will take days.

archive.today (a.k.a. archive.is, archive.ph, archive.md) is a great website and a valuable resource that I'm grateful for. That being said, it is not a long-term web archive and it is not intended to be one. This is what the site's sole owner (who is anonymous, by the way) has said about it:

Yes, the word “archive” in the title is misleading. The main purpose is to hold up ephemeral web pages for latecomers. Shots taken more than a few days ago have almost no visits.

(source)

I don’t give guarantees. And I don’t trust the guarantees of others (like the clouds). One day it will be lost forever, just like your photos on Facebook, files on Dropbox, etc. It will happen long before the collapse of the universe.

(source)

It is an overly optimistic assumption that there will be no risks before I die. Many projects (including at least two in this area: peeep.us and webcitation.org) stopped working long before the death of the people behind them. Many projects pivoted following the money. In addition, there are many critical points (e.g., domains) that I have no control over.

Indian draft data protection rules include deletion of social media accounts upon death, unless relatives are nominated.

This is bad, like very bad. The proposed draft law in its current form only prescribes deletions and purges of inactive accounts when the users die. There should be a clause where archiving or lock/suspension (like Facebook's memorialization feature) are described as alternative methods to account deletion.

If the law as it is is pushed through and passed by the legislature the understanding of the past will be destroyed in the long term, just like how the fires in LA have already did to the archives of the notable composer Arnold Schoenberg.

Edit: Please go to this page if you want to put in your feedback, especially if you're an Indian citizen.

Yeah so I am running a home server and I noticed I don't use it at all most of the days so I want to build a solution to turn it on/off when I want from my phone. The goal would be to minimise usage of disk (and therefore hopefully increase its lifespan) and possibly reduce power usage.

Now I have 6tb Seagate expansion HDD drive. It has external power supply. What I want to know is how will it behave if I turn the server off. Will the drive turn off as well? If so, does it prolong its lifespan? If not, is the only way to shut down the disk to manually unplug it? (or use some kind of smartplug, which would be an option, as a last resort).

Thank you for your time and knowledge

I'm trying to download CrystalDiskInfo and through research, it seems the below site is the official one. However, it looks a little odd with a lot of different skinned version (it appears).

https://crystalmark.info/en/

I also found some version in the Windows Store. It seems to be published by CrystalDiskInfo, but list "Crystal Dew World" on it.

Which is official so I don't download malware infested software?

Could anyone recommend any large capacity (2 x 10+tb) hard drives that don't cost a small fortune. They're to store STL files on, so nothing of great importance or that I couldn't download again if they did fail. TIA

Hello,

My wife and me have 2 small children (less than 4yo) and should something happen to us we'd like them to be able to get access to our photos.

For now, things are backed up in google cloud and amazon cloud. in case of sudden death those services are not going to be paid for the next years ... so backup has to be elsewhere (eg on prem).

So I come here looking for ideas for something that would connected to a home server and should be able to be kept in a storage box for years in case of death.

Fully automated would be best.

Thanks in advance for the ideas :)

Hi there,

I’m planning to get a NAS early next year, and I’ve been considering the Synology DS923+ (or its successor, if one is released by then). I currently use Linux (EndeavourOS) and Windows in a dual-boot setup, along with an Android smartphone. My wife, on the other hand, is an Apple user with a MacBook Air and an iPhone 13 Pro.

The NAS will serve as a central hub for our media, including games, eBooks, music, movies, TV shows, and photos. This also includes videos and pictures from our smartphones, my wife’s system camera, and digitized family photos. Additionally, I plan to store documents such as invoices and other important files. Beyond storage, I want to use the NAS to host Plex or Jellyfin and run lightweight Docker containers like Mayan/Paperless, a small web server, and other experiments.

What’s most important to me is reliability. Everything needs to work smoothly, especially for my wife’s Apple devices, with minimal tinkering. Features like automatic backups to external drives and seamless folder syncing between the NAS and her MacBook are essential.

I’m a web developer and generally tech-savvy, so I’m not opposed to building hardware or setting up software myself. A DIY NAS could offer better value for money, but I also value a system that works well out of the box. For example, I once tried setting up OpenMediaVault on a Raspberry Pi 4 with USB-connected 2.5-inch HDDs. While functional, I ran into frequent compatibility issues with Mac devices, which made the experience frustrating and unreliable in the long run.

This leaves me unsure whether a DIY setup is the right choice or if I should go with a prebuilt solution like the Synology DS923+, which seems to offer better integration with Apple devices and polished features like external backup automation and folder syncing.

What do you think? Would a prebuilt NAS like Synology be a better fit for my needs, or is there a way to make a DIY NAS as seamless and reliable, particularly for Apple devices?

Hi r/datahoarders,

I’m looking to set up a local NAS for my Time Machine backups so I can stop physically connecting an external drive to my laptop. My needs are relatively simple: I’d like a small, reliable NAS that can handle this task without overkill features I might not use.

I’m aware of popular options like Synology, but I’m curious if there are better (or cheaper) DIY alternatives for my use case. I’ve looked into solutions like TrueNAS and Unraid but am uncertain about what hardware would make the most sense for a compact, straightforward setup.

A few preferences:

It should be small and not too power-hungry. I’d like something that’s easy to maintain (not too much tinkering required). Ideally, it would have a web interface for managing backups. I’m open to off-the-shelf options like Synology but want to explore all possibilities before committing. If you have recommendations, setups you’ve used, or tips on getting started, I’d love to hear them!

Thanks in advance for the help!

I'm building a SFF PC with a Fractal Terra case. I'd like at least 1 highish capacity HDD installed for backups and photo storage. 4TB is probably enough.

There's not many good 2.5" HDD options these days, so I was looking at shucking an external HDD. I understand many have USB ports on the circuit board though. Which ones still come with SATA?

Are there any other good 2.5" options I should look at?

Hey fellow data hoarders,

I'm considering picking up an used Sans Digital TR8X12G for around 150 USD to use with some 12TB drives I recently acquired, but I’m feeling a bit skeptical due to its age. Before I dive in, I wanted to see if anyone here has experience with this enclosure or something similar.

A few concerns I have:

  1. Compatibility: Does this enclosure handle large drives (like 12TB) without issues? I’ve seen older enclosures struggle with large-capacity drives due to firmware or backplane limitations.
  2. Reliability: Given its age, are there common failure points or quirks I should watch out for (e.g., power supply, fan reliability, backplane degradation)?
  3. Performance: With modern setups in mind, does the eSATA/port multiplier setup still hold up, or should I look for something with a newer interface like USB-C or Thunderbolt?
  4. Alternative Recommendations: If the TR8X12G isn’t worth it, what would you recommend for a reliable, budget-friendly multi-bay enclosure that can handle high-capacity drives?

I’m all about maximizing storage efficiency and reliability, so any insights, anecdotes, or recommendations would be super appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help! 🙌

Cheers,

UPDATE 1: The exact model only have 1 USB 3.0 port and not eSata/SAS ports.

Hi there,

Next year, I’m planning to buy a NAS to centralize all my data. At the moment, I’m organizing and structuring my files. For most categories, I already have a good system in place. For example:

  • Music, eBooks, and TV Shows/Movies: I’ve set up well-structured folder hierarchies, clear filenames, and properly tagged metadata. These work seamlessly with software like Calibre, Kodi, Plex, and various audio players.

However, I still have a few types of media where I haven’t established a solid system yet:

  1. YouTube Channels ===================

I know how to download entire YouTube channels using yt-dlp. But what’s the best way to view these offline? My idea is to categorize them as a "TV show" in Kodi, but that would mean manually creating metadata for each video. Alternatively, I could add them as a separate category in Kodi. Are there more elegant solutions for managing downloaded YouTube content?

  1. Individual Videos ====================

I also have standalone videos, like recordings of TV shows, reports, or single YouTube videos (not full channels). Is there a standard approach for organizing and tagging such videos with metadata to keep them well-structured and easy to browse? If I go along with setting up YouTube Channels as TV shows, making a single video as a TV show in Kodi in my opinion is no elegant solution

  1. Copied Texts ===============

For text content I’ve copied from the internet, I currently save them as Word documents, including the link, author, and title. What’s the best way to organize these uniformly with metadata? Are there tools that can present this type of content in a structured, visually appealing way?

  1. Podcasts ===========
  • Active Podcasts: For podcasts still available online, my podcatcher automatically retrieves metadata like descriptions, chapters, episode images, etc. What’s the best way to download and store these locally for backup? What I mean by this is when the Podcast is no longer offline, I want to import my backup with all the metadata. But I don't know which tool to use for backupping whole podcasts.
  • Archived Podcasts: I have MP3 files of podcasts no longer available online. What’s the best way to organize these? Should I embed metadata directly into the MP3 files, use an XML file, or something else?

General Question: Media Inventory Management

I’d also like to catalog all my media systematically. My current idea is to use an Excel spreadsheet with a separate sheet for each type of media. For example:

  • Movies: One row per film, with columns indicating whether I own it physically, digitally, or both (e.g., Blu-ray).
  • Books: Columns with checkboxes to indicate whether I have a physical copy, an eBook, an audiobook, or multiple formats.
  • Video Games: A sheet for games with rows detailing the platform, genre, and whether I own a physical or digital copy.
  • Magazines: A sheet for gaming magazines, where each row represents a magazine, and columns list which issues I own.

This setup is easy to create, but it can quickly become unwieldy as the number of entries grows. Presentation isn’t great either. A better approach would be a database with: thumbnails for better visual presentation as well as advanced filtering (the ability to sort by genre, platform, or other criteria).

While Excel can handle this to some extent, it’s not very user-friendly for large datasets. Are there tools or software solutions you’d recommend for managing and displaying media collections more efficiently?

Thank you in advance for your suggestions! 😊

Hey data hoarders,

Running yearly backups for my small business, I am having a lot of issues with corrupting HDD drives right now. Usually, I run a simple FreeFileSync job to an external HDD dock from Sharkoon and never had any issues. This year however, has... not been fun.

I have had four instances so far of a drive becoming unreadable after being removed and put back in later. The corrupting drives appear as a 'removable drive' without any partition assigned, and clicking them will give a 'partition corrupted' warning. Using Deep Drill, it's easy to find all the data again, but it's slow so a massive PITA. I feel like I am losing my mind here, with every drive just an inch away from failure.

I have replaced the HDD dock and HDD's and reproduced the issue on a different computer (laptop) running downstairs. So that rules out hardware issues. At this point I am thinking I am removing these drives wrong - even after using Eject USB device, I notice the drive is still spinning. How can I force Windows, and the dock itself, to fully power down before I flip the power button?

Docks used (purchase date):

Sharkoon XT Duo Clone (2017)

ACT AC1504 (2025)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Vincent

I'm resilvering right now a raidz2, works fine, it's going to be long but well...

Now, is there something I can do to improve this time ? Like if for instance if I stop torrenting, will it have an impact ? If I stop writing to the pool will it have an impact ?

this will probably sound like a stupid question but being just a simple user and not knowing the inner workings of this, I'd rather ask instead of being in the dark.

thanks in advance !

Bought a 6TB SATA Ultrastar DC HC310 on Amazon for $95. Great deal. However, right now it's a paperweight.

Here's the drive datasheet: https://documents.westerndigital.com/content/dam/doc-library/en_us/assets/public/western-digital/product/data-center-drives/ultrastar-dc-hc300-series/data-sheet-ultrastar-dc-hc310.pdf

I want to use the drive in a Fideco YPZ04-S2 hard drive docking station that's 12V/3A, but the drive doesn't initialize for offline cloning (or get recognized in Windows 11).

Fideco product page: https://fideco-it.com/product/fideco-2-53-5-sata-hard-drive-docking-ypz04s2/

I don't have a NAS and this drive will just be random storage like other external USB drives.

I don't have access to a PC, only laptop. This is a CMR drive and there is no 3.3 voltage issue (L is 2nd last letter in model #).

My goal is to use the Fideco dock to offline clone a 250GB NTFS drive to the Ultrastar DC HC310 so it can be recognized in Windows, then extend the volume to the 6TB.

My current troubleshooting leads are that the drive is in a format the Fideco dock can't read, therefore can't access, or there's not enough power in the power supply.

I may try a 12V/5A power supply next, as it supplies up to 60W, whereas the 12V/3A only supplies 35W.

Can anyone help?

This may be a lost cause, but I'm posting here as it's a wealth of knowledgeable people.

I have a MyCloud EX2 and I'm running into a permissions error.

Details that I don't think matter:

  • share is mounted by Proxmox and passed to an LXC with a bind mount.
  • I'm trying to run paperless-ngx to organize documents.

What I've tried: Mounting as NFS and SMB

In both cases I get an error saying:

chown: changing ownership of '/usr/src/paperless/consume/Personal/20250114_185845_BRW3C557637933B_001113.pdf': Operation not permitted error: failed switching to "paperless": operation not permitted

My understanding is that paperless-ngx expects to use chown on the directory and files. I've tested from the LXC itself as a sudoer that I cannot chown one of the files on the share, so I think the issue is with my share, and how the MyCoud software does permissions.

Can anyone suggest how I might configure this?
