So obviously archiving TikToks has been a popular topic on this sub, and while there are several ways to do so, none of them are simple or elegant. This fixes that, to the best of my ability.

All you need is a file with a list of post links, one per line. It's up to you to figure out how to get that, but it supports the format you get when requesting your data from TikTok. (likes, favorites, etc)

Let me know what you think! https://github.com/sweepies/tok-dl

My external SSD and 2TB external hard drive keep showing as unlabeled volumes. Could it be the Orico enclosure? (Both have over 90% health: the Samsung SSD and the 2TB external drive.)

Meanwhile, my old Seagate external hard drive, which uses just a USB connection, is still working fine to this day (purchased in 2018).

Hello. I've been looking into improving my data storage solution because up to now I've just been chucking my data into external hdds (1TB, 2TB, 4TB) in a plastic bin and now I have around 12 TB of photos/videos and it's getting to be a pain to organize.

My specific use-case is that I don't actually access the drives a lot. They are off 90% of the time but around once a week I copy a bunch of data from them, and around once a month I write bunch of data to them.

I've come up with a list of features I want, but I've been searching for about a week and it's been surprisingly difficult to find something that meets all or most of my needs.

  • I don't really want/need the features of a NAS. A DAS would be just fine for me and it would only be turned on a couple times a week, for a few hours at a time.
  • Since they will not be on most of the time, I don't care about noise or sound levels
  • I won't work directly on the drive I will copy data to my computer and work on it there.
  • I want something that I can populate with 3.5 inch drives with 8-16TB size.
  • In a perfect world I'd prefer one device with 4-5 bays but maybe two would work if necessary and if it was just one bay, I'd have to get at least two of them.
  • I initially was interested in hardware raid but based on my research it seems that is unreliable.
  • I want to be able to access the SMART data on the hdd(s).
  • Ideally something that works with most OS (I use Linux and MacOS mostly but also Windows sometimes).
  • I don't mind spending a bit of money on this, but I also don't want to overspend by getting something that is overengineered for my needs.

The closest thing I'd found is the QNAP TR-004 but it seems that thing doesn't allow me to see the SMART data. I might be able to tolerate such a limitation on a cheaper product but for the price I would have expected to be able to see the SMART data and run SMART tests.

If anyone has any tips or suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

With bambu labs going full Bond villain this week I’m thinking it’d be smart to backup makerworld’s models before the inevitable rug pull.

Has anyone already started this? If not any advice on where I should start? I have a big ole unraid server and plenty of spite.

CONTEXT:

I have an external HD that contains important personal and sensitive documents. I also use this same drive to save movies from my PC and connect it to an LG Smart TV to watch them. I never take the HD out of the house, and since it serves multiple purposes, it is not encrypted.

Recently, I have come across multiple articles associating LG Smart TVs with various privacy concerns, particularly regarding data collection practices and potential security vulnerabilities.

QUESTION:

Should I be concerned that, by connecting my external HD to the LG Smart TV, any of my personal documents could be accessed or subject to data collection by LG?

hi all, i’m trying to archive some social media posts from a blogging app that implemented a paywall for me to see my posts but i’m having trouble with it.

for context, i’m a complete noob and have never done this before so sorry if this is not the right place (pls point me in the correct direction if it isn’t😅)

the blogging app (it’s called dayre) is very obscure so i was not able to find any information online.

i’m able to get all the links for all the pages i need to archive, but im not sure how to proceed with this! each page has texts and images which i would need to export.

would really appreciate any advice thank you!

I have used these for backups for all previous drives of all different sizes (including 10TB EXOS drives) and always worked fine... but for these new 12TB X18 EXOS drives, the drive seems to hang in enclosure, even though device seems to appear in Device Manager, and the USB connected sound appears in Windows 10... the drive does not appear in and drive related software (Computer Management- Format, Seatools 5 etc) and these hang when it is connected for a long time (SATA bus hanging).

This is newer model https://www.startech.com/en-ie/hdd/sdock4u313 . Model I have was bought in 2014.

Anyone use these, or know why? The external dock model I have is from a good few years ago... could its hardware just not be compatible somehow with these newer drives??

Hi, i have a dilema to chode between HGST He12 Ultrastar 12TB - 140USD (27750 hours) Toshiba N300 Pro 12TB - 230USD (Brand new)

For my home nas storing my family photos backup (Immich) and Nextcloud backups.

What do you think is the low price worth going witl older drive? I heard that the HGST are pretty reliable.

I plan to buy 2 disks and mirror them as 12TB will be enought for years and I will have to probably replace the disks sooner than i will need more storage.

Essentially I have a ps4 and an xbox 360 that I would like to upgrade the storage of. I've been surfing amazon and other websites looking for external hard drives with large storage however my budget isn't amazing and with a lot of more affordable external hard drives that have larger capacities I tend to notice quite a few of the reviews end up mentioning them breaking down after about a month or two of use. I cant really afford to replace a hard drive if it's a scam and I was wondering if anyone here has any they would recommend.

Posting this so people can tell me if they can relate or simply want to make fun of me.

So I just installed Windows 11 (built a new PC) and stupidly forgot to change the setting where the OS will change the "Accessed" date of files when read, and it's bugging the HELL out of me how the timestamps of files that I haven't touched for months, or even years, have now been updated with new timestamps.

Is there any way to revert these changes or figure out what the original timestamps of a file were? Why the hell did Microsoft even change the "disablelastaccess" setting so "Accessed" timestamps are updated even if your boot drive is over 128 GB?

I just bought a Seagate 18 GB HD. When it arrives, I’m thinking about using it as two identical 9 GB partitions, so if one goes bad, I can copy the data from the twin half. I always keep two identical copies of my main archive for insurance but I cant buy two 18 GB harddrives.

Do you think this is a good idea or will it make no difference if it gives a bad sector? 9 GB will be enough storage for me for a long time.

Hi All,

Looking for some help please. I first wanted to build a nas drive... with zero knowledge or experience so instead I am looking for ready drives.

I wanted the Synology DiskStation DS920+ but the price is ridiculous including extra drives, the device is also discontinued. I would go for the DS720+ but it only has 2 bays and DS923+ isn't great for media storage.

Can someone please advise which company to go with and which device?

I need to be storing movies, video recordings and edits for my small business, images, 3d modelling, CNC files and laser machine files. I would like 4 bays or is that just silly, just want to have enough redundancies in place.

Thank you for your help in advance, sorry if i haven't provided additional information which may be crucial.

I'm looking to create ISOs of my Blu-rays. I've seen a lot of recommendations of makemkv + imgburn to do this. I'm on macOS, however, and I can't seem to find a good rec for creating ISOs on macOS after backing them up with makemkv. I'm trying to preserve the disc experience as much, and as easily, as possible (i.e. keep disc menus, extras, etc...).

What are my options on macOS?

Seemingly, no journalism has been published today about whether US TikTok data is available to access in other countries. It is.

However, probably in an effort to fully comply with the US law, VPNs aren't working (at least, PIA and Proton both haven't worked for me).

I bought a seedbox in the Netherlands for $5/month (can buy just one month) using this service:

https://ultra.cc/

I ran the IP it gave me through every free "IP reputation" service. Its a perfect Netherlands IP address, not recognized anywhere as a proxy or VPN, and the service is extremely fast (I'm getting functionally no slowdown from my normal service whatsoever, 300mbps+ down). TikTok.com is fully accessible.

I installed Wireguard in one click on the server, downloaded the config files, and set up the client on my computer:

https://docs.ultra.cc/books/wireguard-%28vpn%29/page/wireguard

The only thing is you can't log into an American TikTok account. But I downloaded my data as JSON, so I have access to links of all my data.

Have been using this method on accounts, since myfavTT doesn't work, since you can't log in to a US account:

https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/1i3oacl/my_process_for_mass_downloading_my_tiktok/

This was all more straightforward than I expected. Maybe the data will go offline soon, maybe not, who knows.

Hi everyone.

A few years ago I begun archiving https://www.russian-records.com/

I remember having an issue before with the embedded audio links not exposing themselves to jdownloader or linkgrabber extension for chrome, i usually use both in tandem. In the end I was able to essentially webscrape the site using both tools, where Jdownloader's find Url function would help me find the artist/year./title etc so i could input the id3 tag.

The best I cant find now is this, however the audio contains no ID3 tags, nor a link in jdownloader to point to them.

https://www.russian-records.com/data/media/

Now though....I cant seem to expose any mp3s the old way, which is strange, i must be missing something id done before.

This is how each mp3/album cover link presents itself alone.

https://www.russian-records.com/details.php?image_id=11904

Clicking on each to download maybe over 100,000 audio files would be a bit much for sure, question is how was I automating it before. I've only ever used Jdownloader 2 and linkgrabber extension for chrome.

Just to be on the safe/legal side, I'm only downloading the out of copyright/public domain stuff of course..

https://preview.redd.it/l9pv69qdszde1.png?width=1120&format=png&auto=webp&s=377b3249bea215229f12ec6b53699f5c58560ce9

Before, I used to use linkgrabber here to filter the links, then use Jdownloader2 to do a deepcrawl, although that no longer seems to work

Im going down the rabbithole of wanting to digitize all my old family photos (primarily to use on immich). Theres thousands of them so for sanity sake i was looking at the FastFoto-680W. (no negatives, just prints that I have copies of).

I went down the review wormhole a little and found a lot of complaints about "scratches" and "depth not good" from it. So then an alternative of the V600 came up.

For someone who wants to digitize the photos for family/friends viewing via immich, whats the general suggestion? I want to make sure the qualitys good, it doesnt need to be immaculate for posters and stuff, but im also weighing out the time consideration.

Hesitant about sending the photos away, im looking at local places to digitize, but I like the idea of owning the equipment so I can then do more in the future if needed (more family give pics etc).

So whats the 2025 suggestion for how to digitize photos?

...it only downloads the videos, not the slideshows. It would take a sh*t load of a time to sift through all of my liked videos to find all the slideshows and try and download them directly. Is there any way I can bulk download all my liked slideshows to save them? I'm not from the US but I'm trying to bulk download so I can archive for the future, as my country loves to lick the US' boots and will likely follow suit. If anyone knows an extension, site, etc or any way that I can download my slideshows in bulk please let me know.

Reading through a bunch of JBOD recommendations it seems that USB based enclosures aren’t typically recommended. However, to connect a mini-SAS or other to a Mac mini would seemingly require a thunderbolt to PCI adapter with a mini SAS card, adding considerable expense. At that point, seems that you might as well get a thunderbolt enclosure (though an 8 bay Tb is pricey).

Or is USB-C really just fine for this use case at the end of the day.

I would expect to have 3 4k streams going at the same time max, but most of the time, just 1.

I'm looking into Foto bulk scanning, which is where you arrive at the FF680W. Though people mention, the ES-500W, which is a document scanner, it's virtually the same and could be tweaked for future scanning with the right settings/software.

Is that true? How to set it? Or is it just wishful thinking and still falls short?

Thanks a lot!
