Just bought one of these on amazon and I was wondering if anyone has ever bought one of them before and knows anything about them. They are sold as "Refurbished Excellent" and reviewers mentioned they had plenty of power-on hours, but I figured that wouldn't matter since these are HelioSeal and so they have an insanely long lifespan. Just wondering if anybody knows what the average amount of hours they send these things with are. I'll get around to SMART testing is when it gets here but I just wanna make sure I didn’t get scammed. 12TB for $130 caught my eye but you never know sometimes you get what you pay for

Still confused in the difference between a hdd enclosure and DAS ( nas is not considered in my situation )

I've attached an image

Can this be considered as a DAS

btw I'm in the Philippines, the term "DAS" isn't widely used

I have10 drives in total they are all IronWolf PRO 4TB but with different model numbers and I'm trying to see if there is any major difference beside the model number, cache size and the word enterprise that could affect in any way.

I'm trying to replace my failed drive on server. 6 of my drives are with this model # drives (ST4000NE0025) 2 drives are with this model number drives (ST4000NT001) and 2 other drives are with this model # (ST4000NE001) which is one of it is the one failed.

Hi everyone, I run a 16 TB Plex server. I want to create a backup in case any of the drives fail.

What programmes would you recommend I use? I have access to both a Linux (Debian 12) and a Windows 10 system, so either OS applications would be great!

Hey there,

I recently got into a super cheap family subscription for OneDrive and want to switch from pCloud to OneDrive completely. I don't know if pCloud is that popular, when I started using it, there were built-in options to migrate all data from OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive to pCloud, though OneDrive doesn't have such a feature.

I need to transfer/copy over ~650GB of data from pCloud to OneDrive, but I'm trying to avoid downloading and uploading again because of my super-slow internet connection (25mbit down / 12mbit up).

Is there any tool out there that could help me? I'd be glad for any suggestions!

I have a 2TB HDD 2.5" that is now not being detected by windows and is now doing a chirping noise. I opened up the HDD to see what is the issue with it internally, and it looks like that the arm is not reading the platter properly. I have no idea what are the next steps on this issue, if there is anything else I can do on my end (does the platter need to be lowered? Is the arm the problem? Or is the HDD dead?)

Looking for advice on what I can do to save this drive, or at least save the files.

My plan is to put WD red 24 tb drives in this will they work? I understand they are unsupported. Is it just a warning or will they not work in there data scrubbing smart test that type of stuff. If not what do you think. I need the bay count. I also will buy the 12 expansion unit. So ill be using all 24 in the future. Also what ram do you think i should put in there to boost that up. Thank you

I am downloading and now using a program via the Installer with updates. If i download the portable version lets say to a USB device will I now have that forever? can I use it offline?

My goal is to create a backup of an application that may or may not be available in years from now. Said application would be required to access very important data. Does the portable version insure that I can retain the application forever?

I currently have a system with two WD161KRYZ setup in a mirror configuration.

I want to move to raid 5 configuration with three drives so i look and find ST16000NM005G it fit my needs good its the same size as the other two I have in my system so configuration is easy.

I find a better deal on WUH721818ALE6L4 that costs less and gives me more space.

What of these two should i choose for my parity drive in the raid 5?

My QNAP TS-464 is currently set up as a RAID 10 NAS, about 25TB of storage using 4x 14TB WD Red HDDs.

It's now full, so I need to upgrade, but I've come to realize I don't actually need it to be network-attached. Only one computer uses it, and I'm hoping speeds would be faster via USB (currently reads and writes at about 106 MB/s.)

I'm looking at the QNAP TL-D800C. I know it can be plugged into the 464 as a storage expansion, but my hope is to move my existing drives into it, add 4 new blank ones, and use it as a DAS.

Is it possible to do this while preserving my data and RAID 10 config? Would it make more sense to just use the DAS as an expansion to my existing NAS? I'd be okay with the latter if there's no significant speed boost from converting to DAS.

Hi! So I'm a 3D artist/CAD modeler and I make alot of models, would it be a good idea to invest in a NAS system to archive my work?

I'm also sorta into model ripping (sorta) so I was wondering if it'd be a good idea to get one so I can put everything in there :)

Just wondering if I should use something like Google drive for this kind of stuff

Hello! I don't know much about digital storage but I have personal files and photos I would like to keep on backup, as well as any files for any digital art work or graphic design I might do in the future. I don't have that much money at the moment so I was wondering if I should just invest in a couple 1tb (or less than) drives for now until I could buy better ones in the future. I've been browsing this sub for a while but i'm still unsure on what to get. For now I'm using google photos and google drive (free ofc, I just have separate emails) but i feel uneasy relying fully on a digital cloud.

I was thinking of getting a hdd and put it in a zip up case for stationary storage and an ssd for portable use maybe buy one off amazon for now and get the other in store once I have more money?

I'm migrating away from Google Drive for backups, I got myself a 10 TB Hetzner storage box for regular off site backups. I've got an encrypted Rclone mount for general browseable storage, and a restic repo for regular backups of important desktop folders.

But I'm not sure where the most appropriate place to back up several TB of my most rare and highly curated media, mostly music. But I'm not sure what the best way to do it is. The restic backups seem like they might be overkill. Not sure I need versioning and it seems like it'll just add a lot of resources to pruning etc.

But I'm also what the best way to backup to the rclone mount is that will watch for file changes like music tags and new files obviously.

Any suggestions?

Hello!

Did a lot of research on setting up my first NAS solution. Which led me to a lot of posts on this subreddit already, so many thanks for all the info already.

Let me first describe my situation a bit:

  • Home network: all Ubiquity
  • Running HomeAssistant server on a Dell OptiPlex 3050 Mini - 8GB ram / i3-7100T
    • Planning to install Jellyfin or Plex soon on this box (but depends on my choice of NAS system)

Things I am looking to store/backup:

  • Several devices: 3 laptops and a couple of ipads, smartphones
  • Photography files: I store all my original RAWs + JPGs + DNGs of LR/PS edits
  • Media: Want to stream series/movies to several devices within our home.
    • Transcoding: might be interested in this, but depends on whether or not my current dell optiplex processor is up for the task of doing this.
    • Also: I mainly watch 1080p stuff, very rarely 4K. The main use case will be subtitles that need to be transcoded because some clients don't take them readily.
  • No outside sharing/ access required
  • Easy way to backup all this data to cloud solution somewhere to have an additional redundancy layer
    • I already use Google One to store all our photos.
    • Read good things about Backblaze as well

What am I currently considering:

  • Ubiquity UNAS Pro
    • Very pleased about all my other Ubiquity equipment, so would fit nicely into the same ecosystem, my camera/security system is also Ubiquity based.
    • Separation of concerns approach: no vm/dockers possible, just the storage. So I'd need to rely on my dell homeserver to run a Plex/Jellyfin server instance. Need to check if that'll be possible. I do kind of like this approach somehow.
    • No Backblaze possibility from what I understand, no idea how easy it is to set this up.
  • Synology 423+ or 923+
    • Tried and tested
      • 423+ leans more towards transcoding because of the intel processor
      • 923+ offers more upgrade possibilities, but not ideal/not great for transcoding

My current reasoning

  • UNAS Pro is the cheapest option, fits well within my ecosystem and I can just use it as a pure network storage.
  • My Dell Optiplex server can ideally handle Jellyfix/Plex transcoding, but bit unsure on this, will need to check, worst case I'll need to upgrade to cover this use case. But this in end might end up more expensive than now just buying another system like Synology that can handle this use case straight out of the box.

Feel free to challenge me or suggest alternatives or things I am overlooking. Pretty daunting figuring this out for the first time :') Thanks!

Hey, My grandparents have Mini DV tapes, and I want to digitize them to preserve them. However, looking at all the info here, I'm a little confused about the whole firewire thing, thunderbolt port, and the like. I'm not that great when it comes to things like this, but I really want to do this for my grandparents. May any of you help me please? Would mean a lot

Which option will have the best dependability long term? Least failure rate? It's going to powering an arcade cabinet (for my new arcade line) so it will likely have many heavy hours of constant use.

i have 4 12tb sas drives i want to throw into my nas. However that case is full. I have a 1u space above it. I wanted to build something diy. Its kind of a jbod but not, it will just connect direct into the nas below it with a PCIE Sata card on a riser.

Does this just convert the sas to Sata? If yes, then i can make this work...

Now that 4kStogram has finally bit the dust completely, and no other extensions seem to be working - how do you guys archive Instagram pages (posts, reels, stories) and stay organised. I have saved profiles up to a certain date and would be happy to do some setup to automate doing it in the future. Some of the pages were sadly taken down, so I want to preserve as much as possible

Just wanted to highlight this preservation effort that needs some additional volunteers posted by someone over here.

The dashingdon.com website will be shutting down at the end of this month, along with its 1860 public interactive fiction games. A group effort is being organized to preserve the games before they all go "poof".

In terms of "why should we care", it has been described as:

Dashingdon is kind of a vast clearing house for people who want to get their feet wet experimenting with choicescript but don't necessarily intend on developing their prototype into a commercial product at this time. Consequently it's the vast iceberg beneath the tip of commercial choicescript products we've been documenting since 2010

While I would rate them as all worth documenting as a hotbed of emerging designer talent in the vein of the zzt scene and Doom wad maker community, its a massive undertaking and no coincidence that they had never documented up to now

(I also posted this on r/GamePreservationists over here, so if that's not allowed just let me know and I can edit or whatever is needed. 👍)

This was mine. I collect linux ISO’s and realized speeds were slower than normal in Qbittorrent. It would always reach near 100mbps and nothing more.

  1. I tried multiple different ports and making sure they’re port forwarded.
  2. I tried different settings to see if I screwed something up.
  3. My synology nas warned me I had now 20% free space left and I wondered if the warning caused it, so I changed it to warn me at 5% instead.
  4. I finally gave up and deleted Qbittorrent and config folders but still the issue persisted even with very well seeded torrents.
  5. Still with me? I realized my cable collection is old, I swapped out the Ethernet cable for another and now my whole download speed gets used! Like 800mbps

It seems the old Ethernet cable could only do so much speed.

Hi all,

I'm trying to extract a model from a 3D viewer and for this I need to get the .gltf file (I read here on Reddit). I found the file but when I download it, it all of a sudden is a .txt. It looks all of the JSON content is there, but when I try to import it into Blender it is not recognized. I changed the extension to .gltf but still it is not recognized.

How can I convert the file to a proper .gltf file?
