For my Ceph cluster I picked up a pair of Micron 7450 Max 1,6Gb u.3 drives on the cheap! In an efforts to phase-out those customer Samsung 990 pro drives I think these are going to be a good addition. 2 down, 8 to go..

But I may be guessing my next question; are those m.2 to U.3 adapters reliable (enough)? I’ve found various different models but most are u.2 focussed and there is not much information available on those.

Adapter

Long story short; what’s you opinion/experiance?

Hey all-

I've got an old M1 Mac Mini (16gb RAM. 256gb SDD) that I'm thinking about converting to a home media server with a couple of HDDs attached to a Thunderbolt drive bay. It's going to be used for images, old Premiere/Final Cut projects, the -arrs, and Plex/Jellyfin. I'm thinking Docker is the way to go for the -arrs.

Question for you all: how is the reliability in this setup? Is Docker stable? Is this something that will work long-term? I've only used Synology stuff up until this point.

I recently purchased a 2TB NVMe from Micro Center with the intent to use it to hoard as many games as possible on my PS5. My current setup is the stock 825GB NVMe + expansion 512GB NVMe (for PS5 games) + 4TB external HDD (for PS4 games). I had a few gift cards to burn, so I decided to pick up a bigger NVMe. I saw the SK Hynix Platinum 2TB was on sale, but then saw the open-box was even cheaper (about $112 compared to $140), so I picked that one up. Went to run some diagnostics on it before putting it in my PS5, and then I saw this:

https://preview.redd.it/whkc0d72v5fe1.png?width=1084&format=png&auto=webp&s=43ce633e1977b16bb2bff6117b784926c8778cdd

Okay, NBD. Use is expected, but I at least figured Micro Center would check for and erase any data, right? Please correct me if I'm wrong! I did a little bit more snooping and found this in the user's Downloads folder:

https://preview.redd.it/nwyxcjs3v5fe1.png?width=1130&format=png&auto=webp&s=da0aa55f658abde59a72174dae6cf04fbb1c3def

After having watched too many Kitboga videos where AnyDesk was used, I've decided to return this immediately and just go with a new NVMe instead. Yeah, if I'm just using this for my PS5, it's probably not a big deal, but if the previous user was downloading and using AnyDesk, I'm not trusting it.

I guess the main reason I'm posting this here is to ask two things: Am I overreacting? And has anyone else had this happen when buying open-boxed storage from Micro Center? Figured I can get some insight on these things on this sub.

Hi Data Hoarders,

I've seen numerous posts in this subreddit about the need to sort, categorize and organize files. I've been having the same problem, so I decided to write an app that would take some weight off people's shoulders.

I’ve recently developed a tool called AI File Sorter, and I wanted to share it with the community here. It's a lightweight, quick and free program designed to intelligently categorize and organize files and directories using an LLM. It currently uses ChatGPT 4-o-mini, and only file names are sent to it, not any other content.

It categorizes files automatically based solely on their names and extensions—ensuring your privacy is maintained. Only the file names are sent to the LLM, with no other data shared, making it a secure and efficient solution for file organization.

If you’ve ever struggled with keeping your Downloads or Desktop folders tidy (and I know many have, and I'm not an exception), this tool might come in handy. It analyzes file names and extensions to sort files into categories like documents, images, music, videos, and more. It also lets you customize sorting rules for specific use cases.

Features:

  • Categorizes and sorts files and directories.
  • Uses Categories and, optionally, Subcategories.
  • Intelligent categorization powered by an LLM.
  • Written in C++ for speed and reliability.
  • Easy to set up and runs on Windows (to be released for macOS and Linux soon).

The app will be open-sourced soon, as I tidy up the code for better readability and write a detailed README on compiling the app.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, feedback, or ideas for improvement! If you’re curious to try it out, you can check it out here: https://filesorter.app/

Feel free to ask any questions. But more importantly, post here what you want to be improved.

Thanks for taking a look, and I hope it proves useful to some of you!

In Archive.ph you can scroll down and see a list of all saved URLs and links for a given site. I noticed recently that there is a limit to how many URLs can you visualize in this way. You can only visualize the latest 2950 links saved for a given site, even though older saved links are still there (I have checked this out by acessing those older saved links when they appear as links in the webpage of a more recent saved URL, and they are still stored by Archive.ph, they just can't be found by the interface but they are still saved there).

Because that scrolling list is basically the only way and the only interface (as far as I know) to see all the saved links for a website, I would like to know if anyone knows other way of knowing or accessing all the links saved in Archive.ph (for example, maybe using or manipulating the source code, or commands, or other more obscure ways?)

Thank you if anyone has some helpful information to share about that

A few months ago I found my old Miami Vice DVD box sets and decided to back them up with MakeMKV.

Seasons 1, 3, 4 and 5 are all normal 6 disc sets, but season 2 comes on 3 flipper discs. (Both seasons 1 and 2 were first released as flipper discs in 2005 and rereleased a couple of years later on 6 discs. I have the rerelease of season 1 but original release of season 2)

All seasons ripped normally except season 2, which won't. I did manage to rip 1 side of 1 disc and even that took several tries and I don't know why it eventually worked. It took a lot longer, with the disc spinning up and down a lot if I remember.

I don't think disc rot could be the cause but I can't play them normally to check because I don't have access to any region 1 player right now. The drive in my computer is a Pioneer BD drive but I also tried 2 USB DVD drives and none of them worked.

Is there something about flipper discs that messes with PC drives?

Hi Guys, I’ve been stressing over this for ages it seems. I cannot decide on what case to get for my NAS that supports at least 8 3.5”. I was looking at a Silverstone C380B but apparently airflow isn’t great. I don’t really care about hot swapping though so I’m fine with a “normal” case. However So many cases say they support 8+ drives but only support like 4 out of the box and sourcing the brackets for more seems impossible. Especially since I’m based in New Zealand.

Any help would be appreciated.

If it's possible, how do I do this.

I've been trying to look for a couple of videos that have been deleted, or privated, that I don't remember the titles of, just some of the details about them.

I've tried using filmot.com, but haven't had much success with it.

I know the crawldata doesn't contain any videos, I'm just curious if it contains the metadata from the pages that the videos were on?

Have 3 Intenso Harddisk Memory Center 6TB 3.5" USB 3.0 (EAN 4034303025459) connected to my PC using all plug in USB 3.0's - Is there a device to allow me to connect all 3 encased HDD to only one USB 3.0 freeing up the other 2 on my PC?

Hey, I live in a pretty cold climate, and I was wondering how well hard drives handle temperature differences. Specifically, I’m talking about moving them between cold outdoor temperatures and warm indoor environments.

For example, if I take a hard drive outside in freezing temperatures, then bring it back into a heated room, could the rapid temperature change damage it? Thanks!

Edit: I havent found any info elsewhere.

The goal is to create an archive of genealogical/historical documents (focused on Brazil) that allows for collaboration. Meaning many people can look at it, view digital books, look through shared excel/sheets, pdfs etc. I have been using Google Drive which checks all the boxes, except that anyone outside of the owner of the drive cannot search for files inside the folders. Using the search function allows you to find folders, but not located files even if searching for a word in the title.

When using the search function in My Drive, this is not a problem. (Apparently this used to have a workaround as you could click a "Add to My Drive" button, but of course Google quietly did away with this.)

Any ideas for an alternative solution? In between a general neglect of physical Brazilian records, and a recent ruling setting an unfavorable precedent for being able to look up genealogical data online there, I want to preserve what I can, without locking it behind a paywall for others.

I'm having an issue that there is no mp4 video on myfaveTT archive html, it plays the audio but there is only a timeline bar at the bottom. it does display the cover images when viewing the list. but does not play the mp4 when clicked on. I've tried redownloading and that didn't solve it. Anyone else experiencing this? I don't want to have to try to view and sort through all my favorites in my folder, the archive is super useful (only when it manages to work....)

i tried downloading favorites from another account on the same browser and same computer and it worked just fine. strange

Unfortunately I've had a family member pass away and I want to save all of their memories from Facebook including pictures and videos, most I know are only available to me this way. There are so many it's no easy task to select each individually and manually download. Are there any Windows/Android solutions to downloading all of the album in its entirety? Thanks a lot

Edit 2: https://youtube.com/watch?v=pHGfqef-IqQ

Edit: The point is not to keep supporting the games forever but instead for the developer having a End-of-life process that leaves all acquired games in a reasonably playable state.

Have you heard about stop killing games initiative ? Its an initiative to change the EU regulation in order to stop the practice of disabling the games when publisher stops supporting.

If this initiative goes ahead then publishers need to left the game in a working state before shutting down support. In other words, the game keeps working without a connection to company servers being required.

FAQ:

For more details:

Its needed 1 million signatures by june and we have so far 400k. If you would like this initiative then you can sign below:

Or share with more people.

P.S: I'm just an interested citizen and I'm not part of the organization.

This has been difficult to get working. I easily set up a MergerFS/SnapRAID thing but of course it lacks throughput benefits of striped setups.

I went to make BTRFS but that option, apparently it is as usual limited by the smallest drive IF you set it as RAID0?

RAID1 and 10 take too much space away. I'm using enterprise SSD disks.

So I started building some MDADM RAID0 arrays, where each array has only disks of the same size. I was planning on combining the result using MergerFS (I've heard of LVM also), and using SnapRAID.

Does this setup actually work the way I expect it does, or no? ZFS was angering with constantly having to destroy pools to do a lot of stuff. Like if I have 6x4tb drives in Z2 right now maybe I want to eventually move to 8tb drives in Z1, and I don't believe this can be easily accomplished.

Is there something I am missing here or is this actually the best way to have 20+ mixed size SSDs with striping, where I can just set it to only use a set number of disks for parity rather than broken Btrfs RAID5 or something?

I'm new to hoarding / archiving, but feel that it's overwhelming to decide what to download, how to process and store it, decide what to keep, and so on.

How do you share your collection? Torrents? ThePirateBay or private trackers?

Forums? Requests?

Or do you keep it to yourself?

Do you collaborate on processing, like a group of volunteers working to process a 100 TB archive, e.g. adding music metadata, movie subtitles, and so on?

Or do you just download what's available and don't add/process further?

According to FastCopy Help, the free version has Conventional Verify (After writing, only dest is reread and verified.) which it performs after copying from the source to the destination.

How does this work? If it doesn't check the destination copy to the source copy, how does it know what it's verifying?
