As the title states the prices have gone way up. Are there any other sites with trustworthy recertified drives I should look at? I need at least a 20tb like yesterday!

There are other questions with similar titles but they don't ask the same thing.

Getting this out of the way: RAID IS NOT A BACKUP SOLUTION IN ITSELF. IT IS REDUNANCY FOR REDUCED DOWNTIME.

Now then, say hypothetically you have a 90TB RAID or NAS. How do you back up something like that? Another 90TB NAS on a different machine? Even then, you wouldn't be able to keep versioning in case you accidentally delete something; you'd need an even larger NAS for that.

We were doing a move of data within ESXi from 1 datastore to another to shrink datastores that were increased in size a bit more than needed.

~28TB of data, with just under 60TB showing free on the Compellent 9000/SC420, but it ran out of space during the migration.

I've deleted a 45TB datastore, as I had copied the data to a vSAN for our production upgrade last week. I can restore that data easily enough by cloning the production VM I created, as it's unconfigured and not in production yet.

The Compellent is being used for secondary storage for test environments, so it's not exactly production, but it being down right now wasn't something we had planned. (in 3 weeks when me rebuild the environments for the new software, yeah).

It's currently doing a RAID scrub, but I'm curious what else will need to be done to get it back up and "running". I can leave things on the vSAN for now to let things settle down...but with the Compellent being a couple years out of warranty, I don't have any support through Dell at the moment. I'm trying to avoid having to go back to them for support stuff if at all possible. There are still 3 Datastores, 2 of which have important(ish) info, and one that has a test lab environment that may be going away anyway as part of a rebuild, but I'd like to not have to delete anything more, considering I just blew away a 45TB datastore.

I have a couple 3.84TB SSDs as offline spares for the unit, but it didn't want to add them to the assigned disks. Not sure if its refusal to add them is related to Emergency Mode or not...but I do have disks available to me that I kept around as I knew we were out of warranty, so having official disks seemed like a smart idea at the time.

Hi,

I'm finally taking the plunge into building my first homelab server, and I'm looking for some advice on the best path forward. I have some older PC parts on hand that I intend to reuse: specifically, a case and a Chieftec PSU from a PC with a GA-G31M-S2L motherboard. However, the motherboard is too old for my needs.

My plan for this server is to run the following:

  • pFSense: acting as my main router
  • Pihole: for network-wide ad-blocking
  • NAS: for general file storage
  • Immich: for photo and video management

I've been browsing AliExpress and have come across two options for a replacement motherboard and CPU combo, and I'm hoping the community can offer some insights:

Option 1:

  • C612 Motherboard Kit
  • Xeon 2680 V4 CPU
  • 64GB DDR4 ECC RAM
  • 4 x 2.5GbE ports
  • 10 x SATA ports with RAID

Total Cost: 229.38 Euro

Option 2:

Total Cost: 226 Euro

Both of these options seem appealing. I'm aware these are used server parts, but my budget is quite limited.

Here are some of my specific concerns and questions:

  • pFSense compatibility: Are there any known issues with running pFSense on either of these platforms?
  • Power Consumption: How do these platforms compare in terms of power usage? I would prefer the most efficient option.
  • Performance: Will either of these options be sufficient to handle the workloads of pFSense, Pihole, NAS, and Immich, possibly with some containers running as well?
  • Longevity/reliability: Are there any known issues with these boards or the 2680 v4 CPU?
  • Other options: Are there any other boards in this general price range I should consider?

Is there a way to bulk download MediaFire files/folders for free? I don't wanna pay, and I don't wanna go one by one on each file lol

I recently setup my Proxmox server again and got a NAS going finally.

Besides media and family content, I haven't really got much other than file backups from when I reset my PC over the years. I also downloaded Wikipedia compressed.

What's some data that I should start hoarding in case it goes away or is just good to have a local copy of?

Ripped some Geometrey DVDs for my son's Geometry class as most PCs/TVs in the house don't have a player attached.

The audio however is very low/soft.

Roku's YouTube I watch at Vol50

Roku Plex Client is around 60-65 for most material

Roku NetFlix around 60

This ripped content I have to crank it to 80 to be able to hear it well (Roku Media Plater to MiniDLNA server)

Just wondering, I didn't save the raw rips, only the mp4s...

Would it be better to grab the USB DVD drive and re-rip and have it boost the audio this time?

OR

Can I just find an ffmpeg CLI which basically leaves the video alone and just re-encodes the audio with a boost in it?

Thx

This question has been asked before, but the last post on the topic was a few years ago, so its advice must be mostly outdated.

I bought a Seagate Exos X16 14TB drive but I wasn't prepared for the regular thumping every 8 seconds (when it does it, which it isn't always) of the PWL. Now I'm undecided between returning it or moving the NAS away from my room (which won't be trivial), are there any silent large drives?

Here's the BlueSky thread.

Thought this might be a good opportunity for some of the folks working on backups to touch base about progress/completion, potential mirroring, etc.

So I'm getting a 2tb ssd for my laptop but I will have a 500gb ssd left over after I swap it out, does anyone know if its possible to use that externally so I can make use of the storage. Also if it is possible whats the best method or like device that will work, that is good quality but not crazy expensive. I don't care too much about speed just want to make use of the storage

Hello,

I've a 5To HDD from WD with a lot of very important file and photo.

I've connected it to my fai box to use it as a "cloud" and select the option to use the disk as it without formating. But find out that the box can't handle my disk so plug it back to my pc but now the disk appear as RAW and I can't access to my file, after some check, it's appear that the disk is now MBR and not GPT anymore.

Try testdisk but get this error :

Analyse cylinder 5/243200: 00%
Read error at 4/241/1 (lba=15183)

I apologize if this isn't the right subreddit for this...

First, RAID is NOT A BACKUP STRATEGY. I have a separate backup strategy. The goal here is redunancy for the sake up uptime in case of drive failure.

In terms of redundancy, I'm not clear what advantage RAID 5 has over RAID 1 (mirroring). I understand the advantage is supposed to be that you get more useable storage out of a set of drives (3/4 of the total drive capacity).

However, for instance, these days four 5 TB drives costs over $700 (a RAID 5 setup), whereas two 16TB drives (RAID 1) costs just over $400. On each, total capacty of 15-16TB. RAID 1 is faster.

Why would anyone want to go with RAID5? Would it just be the need for a total capacity larger than 32TB, which is the maximum drive size right now?

Just got donated a SSG-HDS-HDI35A. Considering flashing the thing and maybe trying Unraid or something...idk. Any ideas? Came with 4x3TB drives I'd love to sink my bits into...

I'm looking for a website that I found a year or so ago when I was curious about starting datahoarding. It was basically a guide to getting started. Very simple HTML site, black background with hyperlinks for each topic. Covered NAS setup, the "nine eyes", best storage practices, privacy, etc. It might have been in the wiki or a top post at some point. Does anyone know the site I am asking for?

I wanted to scrape Twitter for an NLP project, but due to its limitations and official API restrictions, I ended up diving into the rabbit hole of website scraping. While learning scraping techniques, I realized that Twitter is one of the hardest platforms to scrape, but most other websites can be scraped relatively easily.

As part of my exploration, I scraped some NSFW media (because, why not?) from Twitter and Instagram. Additionally, I added a section for Instagram Explore and 4chan, scraping and displaying content in real time.

Summary (TL;DR):

  • Scraped media from TwitterInstagramInstagram Explore, and 4chan.
  • How:
    • For Twitter and Instagram, I used WFDownloader.
    • For Instagram Explore and 4chan, I reverse-engineered their APIs using apiparrot.
  • ps: these are all randomly scraped and not handpicked so might contain some garbage.
  • site : skinsandbones.streamlit.app

I've made a simple project that download my Youtube music history on my local drive: https://github.com/paulchaum/youtube-music-history-downloader

I usually use the wonderful Pinchflat project, which allows you to download, among other things, entire playlists. But I needed something that continuously downloads the music I'm listening to, so I can listen to it again when I'm in the train, without the need to manually add the musics to my playlists.

The script uses your Google account with OAuth to fetch your history and download them with yt-dlp.

Don't hesitate to let me know if you see any other improvements you'd like to make, although I don't have a lot of time to spend on this project.

I am looking to start a shared drive system between a Windows OS and a Mac OS pc. Is it possible to just have a network exposed drive on a PC work for both or do I need a NAS that can accomodate both file systems?

What software do people use to check the health of their mechanical disks, I know this is not a full proof method, but atleast give some insight into how the drive is holding up. I've been using HD Sentinel for a while now, but curious what else people use?

Also what statistics do you place close attention to, does powered on hours matter?

Stablebit has three software programs in their suite. Scanner, DrivePool, and CloudDrive are the three. I am contemplating buying a license for the Stablebit suite. When I go to pull the trigger on the purchase, I get the feeling that batch files can do a lot of the same things. DrivePool and xcopy(in tandem with spanned volume) sort of serves the same purpose. Google Drive sync and CloudDrive seemingly does similar things. The only thing I can see differently is Scanner. There could be a Scanner equivalent through batch. I just haven't researched it yet.

So am I out in left field on this? Does Stablebit just put a nice finished GUI on things? I don't want to deny them the respect they deserve for their effort. My ignorance on Stablebit should be easily showing through at this point. Which is why I am attempting the discussion.

I need the easiest to use, most powerful and automated dedupe software that uses AI.

Not interested in free programs. I want the best. I bought Duplicate Pro 5 but the UI has little to no documentation and definitely no support. Why isn’t there a program where you upload all your photos and videos and it automatically finds the original or best version? I’m dumbfounded why no one has not done this yet? We seem so close with AI. Am I off-base here? Why am I having such a difficult time locating software?
