I got access to SpringerLink while i am studying so i plan on massdownload as much as I can. Is there a way to easily do this. As addition I also have access to the library of my university with many eBooks. Would be cool if there was a way to utilize one tool to download from different librarys.

I have a oldish win 10 laptop acting as a home server including share drive and home backup functionality. It has attached two external drives: HomeShare and Backup.

  • home server is always on and after boot is acting as a server without intervention
  • I am using windows file history for backups for all win devices at home
  • the home server store backups its files into the Backup drive
  • 4 other win laptops store backup into home server's Backup drive

Everything has been working fine. Today I realized that the home server does not encrypt any information. I can't get to activate standard encryption so may need to use bitlocker. If I enable bitlocker on home server for the boot drive, share drive and backup drive

  1. Will I have to enter bitlocker password every time I boot the home server?
  2. Will bitlocker in home server interfere with the other PCs backing up into it (share functionality)

I own one right now and I am planning to buy a new one. I have owned it for about 10 years now and I am surprised it lasted this long. I am planning to buy a new one and I am again surprised that the same model is still available but I am not sure if it is still as durable as the one I bought years ago. Is it still durable and last years? Is it a good buy for someone who will just use it to save videos and pictures? I will probably use it quite a lot while attached to a laptop since I will be editing these videos and pics.

I'm currently running a windows storage space with a bunch of random sized drives, and I want to move off of windows and onto a hypervisor to be able to run multiple VMs, and I also plan on adding more drives in the future which will not be the same sizes.

To be clear, none of my data is critical and I'm just looking an easy option to be able to pop a new drive into the machine, add it to the pool, and have the extra space, no need for any mirroring or backups.

Disks currently consist of:

2x12TB

1x14TB

4x8TB

From what I'm seeing online this is not easily done on TrueNas or Proxmox, and it seems like UnRaid might be my only real option. Is this correct or is there something better?

I've been tasked with digitalizing my church's DVD library of sermons. I'm just getting started on the project so I don't have specifics yet but I estimated it would be around 500-1,000 DVDs and maybe 2-5 TB depending on the resolution.

I'm pretty tech-savvy and have been reading around the sub but had some specific questions I wanted to ask. Mainly hardware and work-flow recommendations. I want to be timely (somewhat) but I don't want to overdo a setup since I have no plans of DVD ripping after this. I know there are plenty of hardware and workflow suggestions here, but most I've seen are about digitizing copyrighted movies (legally and illegally) but that isn't something I have to worry about. Anything I should keep in mind? Also, I have some non-tech-savvy helpers at my disposal so I want to set up a workflow in which they have to do very little other than putting DVDs in and out of the drives. Any suggestions?

Hey everyone,

I somehow got a battlefield promotion to Post Supervisor on an extremely data heavy documentary film. We have around 350TB of raw media. One set of raw media is at my office and is housed on three (3) ~160TB OWC RAIDS. Our backups, in WA state, do not have matching file names -- and are also stored on 2 or 3 large OWC RAIDS. Obviously this is not ideal, so I'm wondering if there is a utility that can simply catalog all my files and change the names of the files on the backup? Or how you might go about fixing this situation. It's A LOT of footage and would take a long time to rename everything by hand. OR we could build some sort of rack mount server down here, mirror my drives, and send it back up to WA state - bu then we'd be throwing away $15K worth of drives, though we could potentially sell them or keep for a third backup. Any advice is welcome!!!

Novice here. I have been data hoarding old TV series for 10yrs which represents over 40tb of data. What is my best backup solution for this much data? Thanks.

I run a media server (plex among other things) that I share with friends and family. It’s a labor of love, I’m sure many of you relate. I’ve run out of SATA ports and would like to throw a few more storage drives In there.

I’ve read here that HBA is better than PCI-E sata card because the sata cards are frequently of poor quality in this crypto mining age.

I see that there is 6gbps and 12gbs hba’s. The 12 will presumably result in faster file transfers and file playback speed? Or is the difference not worth paying more for?

Can I trust that any of the cable bundles are fine so long as they have a lot of solid reviews?

Would someone recommend a good hba on Amazon or EBay? I’ll pay more if there is appreciable difference in speed or quality. I hear they run hot, but I have well thought-out airflow in my pc.

Hello. I'm looking for a moderate-size PC case with space for horizontally mounted 3,5" drives.

I want to reuse a 1000W PSU that's 180mm long and i don't want to mount the drives vertically behind the mobo.

I intend to use a standard air cooling for CPU.

I'm looking for recommendations.

I have learned that my current drive has some issues with being able to rip specific format CD / DVD PC games. Does anyone have a recommendation for a drive that you are sure will be compatible with most discs?

Not efficient, not fast, and hopefully long lived.

Recently set up a pi5 ‘home server’ and I’d just like to be able to throw a tb of books on there alongside almost a tb of kiwix .zims.

Can anyone recommend a low power nvme for this application? Should I go for another storage type via USB as I don’t care about speeds?

Now running a cheap netac nv3000 250gb and would like to upgrade. It’s fine but I’d just like to get my pi PSU running as smoothly as possible. Currently (hah) pushing power into GPIO and usbc, will solder an extra rail onto the nvme hat.

Hi everyone!

Need a reliable backup for a couple of hundred GB of data? Would this MDISC pack of 5 be good for that purpose? Thanks.

I am a beginner when it comes to RAID. Is it a bad idea to use SnapRAID in combination with two RAID 0 arrays, for example?

I currently have a 14TB drive for parity and four data drives: 2×4TB and 2×3TB, all CMR, with relatively low read speeds. Would it make sense to create two RAID 0 arrays with the matching drives and add them to SnapRAID? In my mind, this setup would increase read speeds while still providing protection.

I have already a Mac mini m2 which I got at a big discount from my ISP, but I don’t have a real use for it, it will be used in the living room and some casual web browsing/ plex playback on the tv in the living room.

What and how do I use the Mac as a NAS? I don’t want to buy a separate bad for home backup when the m2 it’s much powerful and at idle the power consume its almost the same as the router.

Preferably 2 HDD 3.5” for redundancy

I have 7 different external hard drives of various makes and sizes hooked to a powered 8 USB hub. Several times a day, the hard drives randomly disconnect and then reconnect. What would cause this? Can this cause any damage to the drives? It makes no difference is I'm using the laptop or not. It's totally random. Any help on this would be appreciated.

Hey all,

I'm building a home server for Plex and possibly other things down the line. I'm new to this, so looking for guidance on setting up a DAS storage array.

Current Setup:

  • Mini PC: BeeLink Sei12 running Ubuntu (for transcoding)
  • Storage: 1 x 6TB Barracuda USB (already full)

Planned Upgrade:

  • DAS: Terramaster D5-300 (retiring from my office)
  • Drives: Planning to use 16TB EXOS HDDs
  • Goal: Expandable storage with redundancy (RAID5 or RAID6)

My basic plan is to start with two 16TB drives, but I’m unsure about the best RAID setup. I’d like something that provides redundancy (RAID5 or RAID6?) and lets me expand storage over time without major headaches.

Can I just drop two drives into the DAS and configure software RAID easily? What’s the best approach here for someone running Ubuntu? I have no idea here to start, so any advice would be appreciated.

Appreciate the help!

Hi all!

I'm beginning to think to move some rarely used data to blu ray discs, to free some space from my drive.

I read here about DVDisaster and the importance of using the right optical media, (HTL instead of LTH ecc) but how do I actually check the disc specs? I have windows, mac and linux available, but I'd like suggestions for the right tools to be used

thank you very much!

I have an old WD My Cloud EX2 I just dug out. I was hooking it up to my router so my friends and I could pool all our...

movies

but then I found out that it lost support some 2 years ago. The two HDDs inside are easily removable, so now I have two 2tb HDDs, and a need for a NAS cloud drive.

I was thinking of rigging up some Raspberry Pi contraption using udp and OpenVPN, maybe parts of the old WD dock. All I got on hand is my Pi 4 with 2gb RAM. Any input or suggestions?

Hi all,

I'm delivering a 30 minute online presentation / workshop in my organisation on the value of developing one's data literacy in the workplace.

I'm collecting ideas for simple activities or demonstrations to help convey this idea to lay people.

Does anyone know of anything or has anyone seen something that fits the bill that they thought was good?

Thanks in advance!

So I recently, setup google drive on my desktop. I get the syncing part that my files on my phone and drive will remain the same.

But backup and sync are different things... where are my backups being stored and how I can restore them in case of a malware or ransomware attack?
