raid 10 most likely be in UNAS Pro and local daily backup to Synology ds223j.

1st post here, and I didn't found any info about this behavior unless is a recertified drive. How to zero fill a s.m.a.r.t from a drive and why someone would do that? It was used, the antistatic bag came with a generic one reading "www.straton.com" with a batch number reading 1223.

The seller didn't say it was used, which increased my doubts even more.

The question now is, is straton safe? Do you have any experience with them?

I want to digitize my DVM60 cassettes, but my camcorder recently got damaged because I mistakenly used the wrong power adapter.

I tried searching online for an old camcorder or a DVM60 adapter, but couldn’t find one.

I also reached out to some local photographers who fortunately have an adapter, but they’re charging an absurd amount of money to digitize my old footage.

I really don’t want to lose these memories, so is there any other way to do this without spending a fortune?

Also, I’m not sure if this is the right subreddit to ask, so sorry if it’s not.

I've noticed a few posts with a lynx command to archive pages.

I grabbed the latest binary and it doesn't work on my Win11 machine (incompatible). I see there are many other flavors available, but I need to compile my own or spin up a VM to test how they work.

Am I missing something? Is there a 64bit version, or is lynx limited to 32bit on Windows? Am I looking at the wrong software (https://lynx.invisible-island.net/current/)?

Any direction appreciated.

Sooo. I'm asking the question because i didn't find any definitive answer. Probably nobody can answer this but i just want to know if i'm in the shits.

So i build my data server (synology) one month ago. Transfered most of my files from multiple drives and external media to it. But i used my main computer to do the transfers.

I just found out that one my RAM of my stick was faulty after multiple crashes. Let's say 1000s of errors in MemTest kind of faulty. Replaced and tested everything, now it's fine.

But my question is... since i don't know when my RAM started getting faulty, did i corrupt most of my files i transfered using this RAM ?

I checked hundred of files, videos, etc... on my server, they seems fine. I rewrote a lot of them with some backup to check if they are the same. They are, at least the ones i had a backup for.

Sooo who i can be sure that most of my files aren't secretly corrupted ? I guess the videos, it would probably be a few frames that are out, so i wouldn't see it...

Thanks in advance,

And sorry if it is very noobish. But yeah i should have run Memtest before transferring so many TB of files...

edit : small corrections

So, I currently have an old windows PC using a bunch of different, old disks in storage spaces for a Plex server. Some are wd, Seagate, Hitachi, some are 3.5, some 2.5, some upwards of 10 years old, and the whole array is about 8tb. Windows is installed on a small SSD, the disks are all linked and it's running Plex, sonarr, radarr, tautulli, qbittorrent and nordvpn. I also use it to store misc. garbage, but nothing is irreplaceable or mission critical. My problem is that storage spaces with parity is incredibly slow and without parity isnt much better. There's also issues with split tunneling in windows still.

I'm looking at replacing the whole setup with a Pentium/i3 nuc with a usb-c DAS enclosure. I'd like to be able to remotely access at least qbit/sonarr/radarr remotely using nzb360, and I do not want to route Plex through a VPN. I'd also like to be able to keep everything updated without much downtime

What's my ideal setup here? I'm thinking some flavor of Linux, zfs and docker, but I'm unsure of the specifics or the setup for them

Have you noticed a shift towards NAS storage lately? It feels like just yesterday the cloud was the go-to for storage even with all the annoying fees, slow uploads, etc. Now, I’m hearing more buzz about NAS setups among friends and local businesses.

For example, At work, our design team switched to NAS after getting fed up with lag and version control issues in the cloud. My photographer buddy recently got a Ugreen DXP4800 for her massive photo library. She can't stop raving about its speed compared to her old cloud setup, plus she’s thrilled to ditch those monthly fees. Surprisingly, even my neighbor, who's not very tech-savvy, is using NAS for his family photos and videos. He loves that everything is safe at home yet accessible anywhere, like his own personal cloud.

So, is it just me, or are more people around you jumping on the NAS bandwagon?

Hey guys. Looking to store around 8-10 TB of films, most likely on 2 external hard drives since the ones with a larger amount of storage get too expensive for my budget. I’m looking to stay below €200 per drive.

So some extra context. The drive needs to be comptatible with a Macbook, i’m looking for plug&play with no required set-up, and i’m mainly gonna use it to just hoard all the films. If i’m gonna watch one of the films i’ll just copy it off the hard drive to my laptop which in turn sends it to my TV.

Would also be great if it can transfer files higher than 4.4GB for films that are in 4K. I’ve read somewhere that i have to use an NTFS based drive but that won’t work with writing on my Macbook, so what do i look for then?

Bonus question: does it even matter if the hard drive is an HDD or SSD?

I’ve seen some options that are below €200 but i’m not entirely sure if they match with my needs as described above. The ones i’ve seen that i can afford are the likes of WD My Passport 5TB, Lacie Mobile Drive Moon 5TB or Lacie Rugged Mini 5TB

I’ll be eternally greatful if a tech wizard can give me any insight, because i lost all my hard drives a year ago and i can’t wait to rebuild my library of favorite films, since cinema is a big passion of mine

Preferably some software that is not overly complicated

Coming from r/GIS, the applied sciences website https://appliedsciences.nasa.gov/ is down since Tuesday, after Presidential Executive Orders to filter public facing information. I'm sounding the alarm that any and all earth and climate related data should be backed up by all of us as soon as possible.

My mum puts time out on my computer (can't wait till the second I turn 18) because I have "ToO mUcH dOpAmInE", but PRAISE THE LORD, she doesn't know how to put it on my phone because I have a different email. Normally I use MEGA or MediaFire to transfer my projects (especially Minecraft worlds) from PC to Cellphone and vice-versa. Normally I transfer .zip folders, but this time I forgot to compress it. So I tried what I do normally: put /file on the end of the link, which leads to the download and it all goes well..... until I discover you need PREMIUM to download FOLDERS. I rally don't know what to do, since I do not have access to edit the files since I have two separate accounts. I already tried jDownloader and discovered that it is just kind of a "Bluetooth" to pre-download files on your PC. The tried ADM and it said that "the link is outdated". I don't know what to do. I have a minute or two of screen time left and my computer is so slow I wouldn't be able to even compress the folder. Can someone find a solution or use jDownloader to download it and send it to me as a .zip?

Hi, sorry if this is a weird question but lately I've been getting into niche microcommunities and other subgenres. I was wondering if anyone knows of how to download on mass a bunch of images from a particular Tumblr tag like for instance #LiminalSpace or is that not possible? Thanks!

I’m running a Synology DS920+ with 1 14TB WD Red Plus HDD. Unfortunately they supposedly don’t make them anymore. Noise and power consumption is a huge concern, so shucking or using enterprise drives aren’t as viable. It seems like WD Red Plus are the quietest. WD Red Plus 12TB drives are currently going for ~$28/TB on Amazon which feels astronomical. Are there any signs of this changing soon?

I've been working on solving a problem, not even gonna TLDR it, but the solution I need involves more cowbell. Cowbell in this case is SATA-interface SSDs all presentable and nice to a Proxmox overlord for some Ceph OSD action.

I stumbled upon this bad boy and it solved half my problem.

https://preview.redd.it/j5mbn45102ge1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=b5e227fc478e767b58de63a20a529b191c1f288d

That's a PCIe adapter with integrated SATA controller that can service FIVE m.2 SATA SSDs. I tested it, it'll handle all 5 full-throttle at their rated speeds, assuming you have m.2 SATA SSDs that aren't pieces of shit. I'm looking at you, Toshiba and Lite-On.

I'm working with motherboards that don't support booting from PCIe NVMe devices, but they'll fancy something behind a controller they recognize, so these also free up a SATA slot for a spinner or a larger SATA SSD.

The other half of my problem is that I also have an abundance of mSATA SSDs, and I want to be able to slap them onto this kind of thing as well. Fundamentally, this should be a slam dunk, right? mSATA and m.2 SATA are electrically interchangeable with the right pinouts, but high and low, I've looked all over and no one anywhere seems to make a mSATA adapter board with a controller and support for more than 2 SSDs.

If anyone happens to know of this sorta device, please do tell. Otherwise I gotta finally get rid of these mSATA drives gathering dust.

Hello, I've just started a new video job and inherited a Pegasus 2 R4 and a Pegasus 3 R6.

The R4 has one dead drive (a 2TB Toshiba DT01ACA2) and both the R4 and R6 are full to the brim.

I've talked to the IT department at the place that I work and they say that you have to replace it with the same drives and they can't get those drives any more. Is this true?

I found this compatibility list file:///D:/Downloads/Pegasus2%20Compatibility%20List%20v3.4-20181004.pdf and these all seem like pretty old drives so I kinda get where they are coming from.

I need some storage reasonably soon for all the projects starting up this year so I figure my options are:

  1. Try to upgrade the Pegasuses with larger drives that aren't on the compatibility list.
  2. Build a new array of some sort.

Keeping in mind that I'm good with computers but noob with RAID/NAS, what would you fine folks recommend I get?

Hi,

I was wondering if there's a yt-dlp based auto-downloader which can automatically detect if the streamer is online or not and start downloading on it's own. A docker conatiner would be great for this.

I understand this might be a bit too specific and there's no option other than manually running the yt-dlp command.

Thank you!

Lately I've been seeing an increase in used high volume HDDs going into the secondary market. Looking into it, it appears most are coming from data centers that are retooling for AI.

I kinda want to get a few. The prices are pretty good, still pretty pricey but significantly lower than retail. I usually just use them for cold storage. Should I get a few?

I've decided to set up a book scanner so I can start scanning some Japanese books that I have that I haven't been able to find digital editions of (I want to be able to print the pages so I can mark them up without touching the actual book.) I'd also like to scan some glossy CD insert booklets and art books that I've got lying around. Does anyone have advice for good cameras to use for this? If you can suggest budget options as well as potentially top of the line if price were not an issue, I'd very much appreciate it.
