Really not much more than that sentiment. At some point, those who save the data will come to be viewed as national heros.

Carry on!

Edit: typo

The census ftp site at ftp://ftp2.census.gov/ and ftp://ftp.census.gov/ are both still returning a connect error. Wasn't sure which flair to use.

Hi! I just found this subreddit and I really appreciate the work you are doing. Thank you.

I have two questions:

  1. (full understanding that laws can be morally bad) is there any laws against doing any of this and/or do you think such laws could be instated?
  2. Is there anything I can start doing to help? (I am not particularly technically skilled, but open for learning).

I saw scrolling on my phone this morning and came across a thread about setting up a Wayback machine alternative, posted within the last day or so.

Can't find the thread anymore. Not sure if it was on here or another sub. Anyone got a link to it or the Discord link that was in a reply?

Will delete this post in a bit either way.

Edit, I am not after an alternative to the way back machine, I am after the thread posted on Reddit about setting up an alternative.

Anyone know how to help these researchers out who need deleted federal data?

I'm pretty new to all of this, but I have a bit of extra space on my PC and some reasonable tech knowledge. I've never tried torrenting before, but I've been looking for things to do during the mess that has been 2025, and this seems like a place to start. I've seen some conflicting info on this subreddit though, so I have a few questions.

  1. What needs to be backed up right now? It seems like a lot of things that people are mentioning already have multiple backups. So what doesn't?
  2. What's the best way to host/share this data? Like I said, I'm new to torrenting. I know it lets lots of people share chunks of data, but where can we host that data so others can see it?
  3. How do people cover their asses with all of this?

Thanks for any input you can give, and forgive me if this sounds ignorant.

Is anyone aware of a largely-complete copy of the USDA Plants database? I'd love to add that to my growing hoard. I have a feeling it's too large to Zimit, and I don't want to waste Zimit resources by trying. I imagine they are experiencing above-average demand at the moment.

Here's the link for those unfamiliar. https://plants.usda.gov/

Just like title, other than files on https://download.kiwix.org/zim/, what other websites do you recommend to finding other good ones?

Hello! I am new here. I have never been tech savvy but I am research savvy I was wondering if anyone has been looking to be able to download the library of congress articles/ research guides. Especially civil rights cases and events. Thank you! Hope you all are having a wonderful day.

I am rather new to data hoarding, however I was curious if y'all somehow back up your stuff. I think most of y'all are running some kind of NAS. They usually have RAID, so if a drive fails your files aren't gone. However what if it burns down etc.? Do you back it up somehow without paying hundreds of euros every month? I currently have about 30 TB of files and back them up encrypted to backblaze for 6$ per TB, but this is adding up to the bill. Seeing that some of you have PB of data I couldn't imagine how you pay for backups.

Every page that I need to reference schedules is giving a 503 error now.

This is disastrous to my personal research, which is nothing compared to the massive amounts of critical projects that are relying on all of the public data across all sectors that's being deleted.

I have institutional access* to papers, journal articles, white papers, and books. I don't think I can get full downloads of everything, but I will try. What can I start backing up? (outside of my own niche academic work).

*Limited, but academic access

hello :)

I have a collection of about 200GB mp3 files that I'd like to upload to a cloud server so I can stream on my phone. this is the setup i'm looking at:

  1. Storj for file hosting - seems to be the cheapest alternative for hot storage with S3 functionality. I was trying out Wasabi but I think Storj would be better for my case?
  2. Desktop file management - I'm trying out Cyberduck at the moment to handle the upload of the files, but I'd like to switch to something with automated sync capabilities. I'd like to be able to add/modify/delete the files on my Mac (through a player like Swinsian) and have them sync on the cloud with not much effort. Can you recommend Filezilla for this? or any other free software?
  3. Astiga for playback on my android phone - still testing it out but looks like a good option.

would appreciate any insights on this! does it sound good? do you know of ways to improve it? I'd like to keep it very cost efficient since my collection is not so big.

Trying to set up my first NAS/JBOD. I got a new LSI 9300-8e installed in an Intel Server. Windows sees the LSI in hardware manager but cannot see any of the drives connected to my NetApp 22446... Is this a bios thing - Please help! I was able to install TruNas and I am pretty sure they show up there, but not in Windows!!!

I did a little research and read that the firmware can be updated on the LSI -- is this recommended and where/how do I do that??

Also, any recommended guides or advice is much appreciated... I am new to this!

I have four 112T servers and want to be able to experiment since this is my first time building a rack. Am I better off using bios raid / hw raid / or an OS like TruNAS to combine the drives and servers? Is there some way to mount/connect all this through a network switch?

I have a local snapshot, taken using Zotero, of a webpage; the parent website has since gone offline. The webpage is not in the Wayback Machine, nor is most of the website, though a few snapshots of some pages exist.

Is there any way to contribute that snapshot to Archive.org? I didn't find anything about doing so in their help section.

The stuff from GitHub requires coding or flat out doesn't work and, for some reason, MyFaveTT keeps having errors and won't download any videos.

Is there anything that could download all the videos off of a single Tik Tok profile without requiring a price tag (4K TokKit)?
