Hi everyone,

So, I've been thinking about setting up something for archiving useful data for a few years now, like, a "what would be needed to to reboot civilization" kind of thing (wikipedia, scientific research, etc), but never took the time for it. Then the "let's save sci-hub data" event came, still couln't find the time to set up anything.

Well, I guess the current events are as good an occasion as I'm gonna get, so, let's get this rolling ! :)

Skills and resources I have to offer

Definitely not a lot of time/energy, so, keeping track of resources that need saving, crawling stuff, etc, not much.

I'm mostly thinking about hosting stuff. Self-hosting, in particular.

I can put together a rig with a lot storage, to provide one more copy of threatened data. Keep it available over torrent. Or web. Or over Tor.

Or a mirror of a website indexing where this data is. Or one more IP to crawl data from.

Or anything else along those lines that would be more useful ? The exact form is precisely what I'm asking for here :)

Relevant projects I know of (but have no idea which ones could need what I'm offering above) :

  • The Internet Archive
  • Software Heritage
  • Safeguarding Research
  • Possibly Kiwix ?

Conclusion

I hope this subreddit is the right place to ask for this, please let me know otherwise !

Thank you in advance :)

So I just received this message on all my archiveTeamWarriors, is this good? Did we do it or is this bad?

Hello everyone! So, I was about to buy a Toshiba external hard drive of 4tb, but I decided to read a few comments and I noticed someone said they were fine as long as you don't write a lot. Thing is, I want this hard drive to copy paste my videography work after a shooting, then delete it after I back it up, so it's gonna be writing a lot of stuff, is there a good recommendation for a 4tb external hard drive than is good for this kind of stuff?

Thanks you in advance!

I have a ton of government GIS and statistical data that I have gathered from various places. I am wondering if anyone knows of a program to catalog all of it so I know what I have? Preferably something easy and intuitive without too much of a learning curve.

I really don’t think I want to go to UNRAID for my Windows 10 media server. Is there another way to go besides a software RAID?

I share PLEX and other things with my family and friends. Over the years I‘ve found myself constantly moving folders around, calculating their sizes to figure out what needs to go where, every time my drives start to get full, and when I add new drives. RAID would certainly make that less of a PITA right? But looking at the pros and cons for me, I wonder, is there another way to solve my problem that doesn’t suck?

I have a main 1TB hdd that i carry around that has the main backup of the things i work on, personal pics, etc, and another 2TB hdd that has the same data backed up plus favourite media (movies/series/anime/etc), and this is all i have.

So, to follow the 3-2-1 rule i am planning to add a 2TB hdd to back up my back up since i cannot consider the 1TB a backup since i use it often (hence more probably to fail), but also i wanna have a cloud backup (settled on dropbox), but right now these few months i can only afford one of them, i will add the other in the summer.

So which one should i add first? Which has the higher priority? I am guessing the cloud but not sure.

Hello!

I have a few gigabytes of photos, meaning I am outgrowing my Dropbox free plan - where should I store them?

I'm looking for the lowest monthly cost for up to 10GB of photos, although this should be easily upgradable.

Currently considering something S3 compatible (ruling our Backblaze as I need my free plan on there for something else), so something like DO Spaces, Wasabi, etc, or a cloud solution like GDrive (I don't trust Onedrive).

What would be the most affordable option for this in GBP?

I have a cloud backup from backblaze, I will be shipping my data back to me. I'm really new to this space, would appreciate all the help I can get.

I do not need a network system, I plug it in directly to my computer, I shoot a lot of RAW images and the failed drive used to hold them. I can purchase 2x 16Tb or 2x 14tb harddrives and use one for redundancy?

What do you experts suggest! Which drives are reliable as well? I have had 2 seagate hdds already fail on me. I need some concrete futureproofing

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for good alternatives to Audials Movie for recording streaming services like Netflix. I'm aware that direct downloaders exist, but since it's only legal in Germany (where I live) to record copyrighted content for personal use (not download it), I want to stick to screen recording software.

Ideally, I'm looking for something that:

• Offers high-quality recording (preferably 1080р) • Records at a decent bit-rate • Works smoothly with most streaming services without just recording the entire screen • OPTIONAL: Supports 2x or 3x recording speed (Audials offers 2x, but the audio drifts all the time)

I'd love to hear your recommendations! Thanks in advance!

I am wondering if I can mix different types of drives in the same ZFS pool. All drives are Seagate Exos X14 and all drives are SAS 12 Gbps. However, some of them are standard model, some of them are SED and some of them are SED-FIPS. The model numbers are ST12000NM0038, ST12000NM0278, and ST12000NM0368. I found this information at the Seagate official website.

Same question about these X12 and X16 drives to mix with my X14.

My server is a Dell T420 with the HBA in IT mode, and I plan on keeping SED off even for the drives that have this feature.

Are there any combo M.2 NVME/SATA -> USB adapter? Discovered that I hoarded 10 HDD's of different types over the years and before donation, need to secure wipe. If a combo doesn't exist, please recommend a cheap SATA to USB adaptor but reliable, hopefully I can pick one up used on ebay

Thanks

So I'm working on archiving my audio CD collection and I'm ripping my discs as both lossless audio tracks and also making a disc image. For ripping the audio tracks I'm using EAC and for the disc images I'm using ImgBurn. However, I have a few "Enhanced CDs" that after I make the disc image, WinCDEmu won't mount the bin/cue image and some folks have suggested Daemon Tools Lite but when I download the installer for that, MS Defender goes nuts so not sure if I trust it.

My goal is to have a mountable image of the Enhanced CDs that once mounted, behave exactly like the disc has been inserted. I've done a little research and most people recommend just copying the files/folders from the CD however 2 of my CDs show no files in File Explorer and even if they did, that's not a 1:1 archival copy that I'm going for. Has anyone successfully done this and if so, what software did you use to create the image and what software successfully mounts them? Thanks!

I’m looking at transcoding my collection to h.264 from mpeg2. Is there a tool out there that can do a perception based check on the output from both files and flag files that need a second look?

Bit of a noob question but I’m looking for a usbc storage device I can plug into my phone to get away from the iCloud rubbish but I don’t know what brand to get

Some people like Sandisk some people say they’re bad some people recommend Samsung others say they’re not good 🫠

Any advice would be much appreciated

Hello all, I was told to ask this community for some advice on what external hard drive i should get to store 8tbs worth of files on, the files are predominantly PDFs, but a few of them are just raw images, no video, no huge amounts of data, just looking to make a couple of secure back ups for offline storage. Thank you in advance >sorry about formatting issues, on mobile<

If you've seen this i made a huge mistake on the title and forgot to add the words "wayback machine" See title. I tried looking about but the answers give me ones for mac or windows. I'm just trying to put some of them on youtube i found like three in a row and i don't have much time to screenrecord :')

And the shortcuts from chrunos don't seem to work for some reason? Their ytdlp ended up downloading the exact same video for me no matter when i use a shell or a shell mini, and ultimate media downloader and chrunos multi downloader keep saying something's wrong with the code or the link (which is fine i've checked)

I hope this is the correct subreddit though (tell me if i need to post it on other subreddits)

Does anyone have a good mapping app that can be installed on an Unraid server? Bonus points if it has routing capabilities

There are several book writers and artists who regularly post drafts and sketches on social media, as well as answer lore questions in the comments. How can I save it all?

this is the main site https://www.emasteryacademy.com/, and this is when I'm logged in to the platform https://study.emasteryacademy.com/course/281/lesson/15373, and this is the download link captured by IDM but not downloadable https://vz-89e1cdb9-520.b-cdn.net/6c6643a2-70f5-4118-9bfc-0cd1269e2b59/stream_1.m3u8, this the iframe link <iframe allow="encrypted-media \;fullscreen \;autoplay;" id="ivdo" src="https://iframe.mediadelivery.net/embed/213133/6c6643a2-70f5-4118-9bfc-0cd1269e2b59?autoplay=0%5C&amp%3Btoken=6373294c2f0e55c4304de2659a6fbf886dc88a03338f81ed7b20fa007656aa4a%5C&amp%3Bexpires=1739090368" \_\idm\id\\="40730627">
