Hi everyone!

I'm a long time lurker in this sub, but very interested in archiving, which America has made very clear is needed.

I'm in Denmark, and was wondering if anyone from Europe is archiving important online information from the European countries? Or know of any projects to do so.

Obviously, the situation is not yet as dire as in the U.S. but the authoritarian Right is on the move here too, and the German election around the corner is looking dark.

Original Title: I finally utilized my old LightScribe DVD burner. I did not like the new dubbing of Shrek (they changed it in netflix version and on blu-rays in Czech Republic), so I burned the original on a DVD. What better time to use the laser to burn the label? Btw the smell is VERY chemical.

I recently got 16TB of Samsung SSDs, all 850 Pros. 3x2TB, 5x1TB and 10x512GB. All are retired from enterprise service.

I've done firmware updates and checked their BTWs, the 1TB drives are 'fine' the worst have like 60 TBW (Out of a warrantied max of 300TBW). However two of the 2TB drives are at about 440TBW of a warrantied max of 450TBW. These two are literally 10TB of writes from exceeding their TBW.

So the question is, how far can I likely exceed these limits? I'm thinking of using the two long most used up drives in RAID0 for LANCache for fast reads. Being just a cache the data on the drives is entirely expendable. (And I'll probably set up a weekly backup to mechanical storage to make restoration easy if a drive does fail) But does anyone have much experience with actually going past the TBW on Samsung drives?

Hey guys using terminal in Ubuntu to setup some bulk downloads , using

ia download -v Page_Name --glob=*.ia.mp4"

The first time I did this it downloaded about 70% of the files but some timed out so I want it to run again but ignore the files from the first time around , is there a command that will do this?

I recently picked up an ORICO-9558RU3 I have in it a 22tb Iron Wolf Pro which I have moved over all of my Blu-Ray rips for back up. I tried to add an 18 tb Iron Wolf Pro and it does not read the drive. I also have a 12tb Iron Wolf Pro and I ultimately would like to add those two additional drives just to drag and drop my rips for back up purposes. I have never used raid but with this enclosure all of the switches are in the up position which is set to Normal/Clear. Am I doing something wrong here? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I have now purchased two pairs of LTO-5 tapes from two different sellers on Amazon that claim to be selling "new" tapes only to pop them in my drive and find the tape reporting 100s - 1000s of GB written to them.

The first set was not shrink-wrapped, had dirt inside the packaging, and no labels. This is what made me initially suspicious so I checked the media chip which reported 600 GB of writes. Immediate return.

The second set was shrink-wrapped with labels and looked brand new, but had even more writes to it than the previous set (3 TB). These are going back too.

WTF.

Where can I reliably purchase new LTO-5 tapes?

As the title says i'm trying to help a friend save the data off an iphone of a deceased love one. I want to save their voicemail, text messages, and their pictures. Can anyone make any recommendations for software I can use to pull that?

I want to create a fully interactive, offline snapshot of my WhatsApp messages, including media, that I can open on a computer without needing an internet connection. Ideally, it would be a self-contained app or an emulator-like setup where I can browse chats as if I were still using WhatsApp.

I have access to my WhatsApp data and backups, but I’m looking for a way to convert that into a usable format. Do you know if there any existing tool, open-source software, or method to achieve this?

My best guess is to just create a virtual machine, install desktop whatsapp, and then never connect to the internet. But I think the app dosen't store my database locally, and rely on making requests to a server to get old messages - like the browser Webwhatsapp. So that wouldn't work.

Another options is to use this, but it requires me to have the key file that whats-app stores locally on my device, which requires root to be extracted. So I guess that's the only option? I wonder what other creative ideas people had for this situation.

Also, my device is not rooted.

Hi, somewhat odd question but I was hoping somebody could point me in the right direction. I want to see all posts+retweets made by an account that has 22.5k posts/retweets. Most of which, are retweets. And retweets are part of what I care about here. I can scroll down on the account but hit a brick wall of no more posts loading at some point, I've heard somewhere around 3.2k? So far, I have found no way to view older retweets by an account which seems wild to me. Anybody know a way to do this? I'm pretty sure all former tweet scrapers are dead, at least as far as I could tell. Seems like twitter just removed the way to look at old retweets by an account? Let me know if anybody has any info. Thanks in advance.

It seems virtually all scrapers are dead in this regard, and I can't find anyway to bypass and see an accounts retweets older than 3.2k posts ago.

Thanks in advance for any information.

Complete noob here when it comes to snapshot, here is what I want.

I want to preserve the original file as it was (take a snapshot) and then change it as I want. Later, if I ever want to get back the original state of file, I can use the snapshot to change it back.

Is this how it works?

If so, is there a software I can use in windows? I just don't want to keep the original file and the modified file, because what I will change is minimal, but would still like to get the old file back if needed (has to be the exact same checksum / metadata it had)

Is it possible? or should I just buy more hard drives?

Some time ago i have linkwarden a try, specifically to save some articles that i may loose access to in case my subscription would be over, however it was just saving the publicly available section of the pages.

Is there a hoarder app where I could pass my login credentials to various sites so it can save the full articles?

So my old 4590 system just bit the dust and I need to replace it for cheap, ideally low power. It looks like my best option will be the asrock n100m with an as1166 card and maybe a 2.5g NIC down the line. It'll be running windows, managing 8 drives (1 boot SSD + 7 hdds) in storage spaces, though I'd like to condense those at some point. The system is almost purely used for Plex. Total cost of that system will be about $239 for the motherboard, ram and as1166.

Are there any other options I should be looking at? Mini PC+das seems a little too expensive for no real benefit, while I would like a newer processor if possible, though the system needs to transcode at least as well as the 4590

I read this news story tonight and thought it might be of interest to this community.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-02-11/microchip-data-doubt-for-tens-of-thousands-of-pets/104921828

tl;dr: one of the companies that registers pet microchip details in Australia has gone silent and stopped paying their web hosting bill. The data is still accessible but it seems very likely it will go offline soon. When this happens, the microchip details of tens of thousands of pets will become inaccessible so that if they are found, there will be no way to contact their owners.

What would it take to mirror this data? Is there any way to recreate a functional database so that people at vet offices and animal shelters etc. can still look up the microchip details of pets with this kind of chip?

Hi gents,

I'm weighing my options for an overhaul of my main home server as it's getting long in the tooth. At its core is an i5-3770K, GB Z77-UD5H, 4x4GB DDR3-1600 and a very nice Cryorig H7. It's served me well for many years since new but is developing an untenable list of faults that I'm getting tired of working around. Examples:

  • Mem slot 2 malfunction
  • SATA port 0 and 3 malfunction
  • Reset jumper inop
  • CMOS jumper inop
  • PCIe x16 inop

I've kept it this long because it still has a couple of plus points:

  • 25Gbit SFP via Mellanox ConnectX4
  • LSI 9211-8i card
  • Roomy 10-bay casing
  • Simple W10 SMB setup
  • The H7 and stack of 10 drives look so good with a lil cable mgmt and a couple of LEDs (side panel is a single piece of custom-cut acrylic)

The data itself is entirely backed up elsewhere and I am just looking at making my life easier in terms of keeping things running as it serves the whole family. It's temperamental eg. on some boots it would randomly decide to not recognize a drive, messing up my software RAIDs. Or throw a code 51 (memory init) and won't start unless I swap the modules around.

Buying a proper NAS would mean the following:

  • Much lower 24/7 power consumption
  • Much easier to setup/maintain/restore RAID
  • Much easier to swap out drives
  • Takes up much less space

But of course I lose the SFP and am limited to 6 drives at most - anything bigger is out of my budget. A third option would be to upgrade the CPU, board and RAM in-place.

A last - and somewhat unpalatable - option is to get a simple but large SATA enclosure with 8-10 bays, but almost all of these are USB 3.x only and still need a host such as an NUC. Total costs would still be similar to a NAS.

All thoughts and suggestions welcome.

I recently bought some Seagate drives but I don't have the option to check the FARM data as I'm not home. I could ask my son to put it in an external enclosure, would he be able to read FARM data through usb though?

Thanks

I've been watching this seagate debacle slowly get bigger - at first it was a blip on the radar, and now it's old China farm HDD's re-entering the market (shipped with minimal/no packing insulation to speak of...).

I was going to pull the trigger on some exos drives from SPD, but since seeing 1 or 2 more posts regarding this issue I am not so sure anymore. Should I avoid seagate altogether? Order from GHD? Buy new?

I have just begun working on archiving/scrapjng the NIST Thermophysical Fluids database (the fluids chemistry webbook). Anyone interested in helping? I am just collecting the data as raw text files. Maybe someone can help putting this in a real database structure?

So I got a stack of ten 2.5” Samsung 250gb ssd drives. Any ideas on how to hook them Up and what I should use them for? Are there enclosures for this sort of thing? I have access to a 3d printer if that helps. I was thinking of using it with a raspi or something, but not sure what end use.

Hi!

I have been thinking about making a cloud backup of my plex server, since i have a lot of rare stuff that can't be found anymore (a LOT of my rare stuff are tvrips/hdtv rips from an illigal streaming site that was shutdown a year ago)

And i thoght about using a private telegram channel as a backup.

My plan is to create said private channel, Add all of the files from my six drives into a archive and split every archive into 2gb parts so I will be able to upload evrything to the channel (telegram has a 2gb size limit for a single file for non premium users)

But my question is if that's a possible thing to do, since in my country there are a crap ton of channels that host pirated tv shows and movies but a lot of them have been shut down from copyright complaines

If i do use telegram as a backup, am i in a risk of getting a copyright complaint and all of my stuff being deleted?

(btw sorry for bad formatting or errors in my english, since im on mobile and also english isnt my first language)
