Needs to be archived (doing so myself)--found within "Feature Films". Pointing it out since it might be passed by for this reason, even though it has proper tags. Hope this helps.

disclaimer***

  • Im not a computer wiz just a casual who enjoys the internet and file org lol

As the title implies, my aunt and uncles' entire business data store is on an external HDD(lol) and I suggested a NAS, they agreed, now all I need to do is set up NAS / transfer the data. (roughly 3.5tb) They also have very slow internet. roughly 100 download and 10 upload maximum.

What SAFE TOOL do you wizards recommend?

  • Can I trust Teracopy 3.17? - I have run multiple tests with around 100 gigs on some smaller folders of my own data on my own devices. all has been quick and clean.

  • ROBO copy scares me (old CompTIA books)

  • fast copy looks sketchy

thanks in advance.

Hi there ! Just had a SSD failure on my computer and realized I had to do something in order to keep my datas from disappearing. I’m seriously considering buying a NAS but I think something like a Synology is overkill (and overpriced) for my needs. Can you give me some advice on what to buy considering what I want to do :

  • backup of my important files (pictures / documents)
  • file sharing (for movies, but I don’t need transcoding as I don’t plan to use Plex, I play my movies from an Apple TV via smb)
  • securing my datas with a raid 5 array, so I guess 4 bays for HDD at least. My internet box has a NAS function but can only fits 2.5" inch HDD (4 of them). Thank you for any advice or ideas.

I have an eccentric taste in the art of sex (no its not illegal) so most of the pics out there do not satisfy me. Therefore, out of my own needs, I have curated and build up around 6GB's worth (i think) of a folder, consist around of 400 images that exceeds my expectations and that are deserved to be in my hall of fame.

I did everything to save it, Winfr, 3rd party apps, you tell me. It doesnt work, naturally, and I just witnessed my efforts and proud collasped in an afternoon. I have thought about backing up my data somewhere, yet never do it, because of the financial difficulties and my own thinking, "it is just porn". Now i realized that it is actually something more than a sexy folder, and I am very upset.

Tl,dr: I should really buy a HDD

I'm looking for a high-quality, large-format (A3) auto sheet-fed scanner specifically designed for photos. I need to scan a large number of photos in the future, so a flatbed scanner would be too slow. I've tried some professional sheet-fed scanners before (fujitsu fi), but their color quality is poor since most are optimized for documents.

Daily reminder that judges often put links to websites in their ruling. This is comical since often these websites now are 404.

And a website is not some static thing since quite often they get updated or simply deleted. This practice is very stupid and needs to be pointed out.

My employer recently paid a few thousand dollars for me a take a course in a topic that is somewhat related to current position but is more related that I'm planning to transition into 1 year from now.

Although I have watched all ~10 hours or so of the video material and took what I thought was detailed notes, I recently had a conversation with my employer where he brought up a bunch of stuff that I feel like I missed. For the record, this is not a matter of improper study technique; I have a BSc in biology/psychology and have a LOT of experience studying complex topics to a high degree of understanding in a short amount of time. This particular course was hard for me to follow because it didn't seem to have any over arching structure and each video was basically the guy doing tangents about somewhat related tips and tricks that seemed to skirt around the topic of the video.

I just went to log into the course and found out that the whole course is only available for 90 days and it expires in a few days. There is definitely not time for me to go back through and rewatch all the videos during business hours and my life outside of work is jam packed with new dad life.

Personally, I feel like my employer jumped the gun on putting me into this expensive course so far ahead without giving me adequate time to study the material to the level that they need me to understand it.

This brings me to my question; Is there a way that I can force download the videos on this website so that I can revisit the information in them at any time? It seems like the web dev must have done something make the videos extra difficult to download.

I've tried chrome extensions like "Video Downloader Professional", and "Video DownloadHelper", but these extensions do not even register there being an embedded video on the page.

My last resort I guess would be to screen record and hit play, but I'm very hesitant to go this route because I feel like the audio is going to suck and its the audio that I'm the most interested in.

Does anyone know of a surefire way to download these videos without setting up screen record and walking away. Each video is roughly 30 minutes if that makes a difference.

I am home user and started serious backups using Duplicacy. Like it very much for being very simple. I started with backuping my C: drive to external disk through USB. Then started backuping my NAS from the pc but it takes so much of time. My average speed is 50MB/s. I am wondering - and because I don’t want to redo the whole thing - if I would have faster transfer rate if I do it directly from my NAS USB port (connect external drive to NAS USB). If I do that my questions would be :

  • Is NAS USB going to be much faster ?
  • Should I resume from Duplicacy Pc, I guess my pc won’t get the USB drive ?
  • Can I setup Duplicacy on my NAS ? If answer is yes do I really need to start over (format hard drive and execute again).

TL;DR: Should I get 2x 8TB EXOS 7E10 Mirrored or 1x 16TB EXOS if I have cold backups and planning to upgrade in the future? Is RAID crucial?

I recently installed TrueNAS on my home server since all my cloud storage was full and it's time to have a NAS anyways. Decided that sharing a HDD with my CCTV isn't ideal. My current solution to store total of 2TB (family photos etc.) data is; 2TB and 6TB external HDDs, 2TB one is backed up to the 6TB one so 2 copies in total. All other personal BS(4ish TB) is in another external HDDs, backed up to decommissioned drives. I could also transfer at least some of these files to my NAS to be accessible over internet. When I transfer all files to my NAS, old disks will be kept as backup. So there will be at least one cold backup for all files.

My storage solution is kinda okay for me for now, but I need disk(s) for my NAS. Since SATA SSDs are overpriced and almost the same price as M.2s, I will be sticking to spinning disks. Found Exos X18 16TB for 330 USD, and EXOS 7E10 8TB for 195 USD. Should I get 2 8TB disks and mirror them; or get the newer X18 16TB for less price, since I have cold backups? I plan on adding more disks in the future. Since X18 is newer and is cheaper per TB, it attracts me more. Also I only have 3 sata ports free on my NAS, so If i choose the 8TB disks, 16TB usable is my top limit (without an adapter).

Also for backups, I'm planning on using ZFS replication for my cold backups. Curious what happens if my backup drive is smaller then the pool/dataset. For example how would I back up a 3x16TB RaidZ1 array with 18TB data to 3x 6TB external HDDs? Was planning on getting a tape drive(isn't as ridiculous as it sounds, was cheap) but didn't, was curious about this then too.

AFAIK RAID is mostly for redundancy/availability, not for data protection. Since I have cold backups and have time to restore them if I need to, can I go without RAID? Currently using a Seagate Barracuda with 3k power ons and 8k power on hours so I highly doubt an EXOS X18 would fail if it survives the first month/years. Also heard some arguments that enterprise disks were meant for 7/24 work and spinning down would hurt them. Should I spin down or keep them running for their health? Independent of power use and access speeds ofc.

Server specs: MSI B450A Pro Max, 1GbE, Ryzen 7 3700x, 32GB 3600MHz Ripjaws V, Kioxia Exceria G2 500GB Boot Disk, Toshiba S300 4TB as CCTV/NAS disk, Proxmox VE, 2 threads and 16GB RAM for TrueNAS

Hello everyone,

does anyone know what requirements have to be met for TRIM to work via USB?

Which USB-NVMe or USB-SATA bridge chips support this?

Does it work as long as UASP is supported, or do one have to pay attention to something else?

Thank you for any tips!

Best wishes, Martin

I am well versed with ScanTailor but sometimes I would like to use that time with fixing pages for something else.

So I was wondering if there are any projects out there that could do this repetitive work with the help of AI. If not, how hard could it be for something like this to be added to ScanTailor?

There are a couple of free games on Itch io that the creator did not allow for download on the website itself and I want to save them. Is there any software or method to download the game or the full website page? Also I can tell that most of the games I want to download are programed in HTML, if that helps.

Hi,

I've used Macrium to make backups so far - I kept 3 full versions and cumulatively.

I replaced Qnap with Synology and I have Active backup - but it makes one full version and then "points" of changes.

Is this a safe backup version? I don't hide the fact that I save a lot of time and space (my entire backup is 1.9 TB).

Hello there,

I'd appreciate some advice on how to organize my storage in the NAS I'm planning to build in the following days. I'm a complete noob in the field and did some reading which led me to the following assumptions. I'd like you to check them for me and see if they are true, or else please correct my mistakes:

  1. NAS purpose: to store important family photos and media and act as a cloud service for the family to upload photos from their phones etc.
  2. This NAS will be built from an old Dell server PC with ECC RAM I bought from ebay and will be backed up regularly on a separate PC HDD dedicated for the backup job only. The second PC (Dell m910q with USB external enclosure for thehard drive) will be a Linux machine, but for the purpose of this backup is it necessary to go for a Linux distro with btrfs file sustem, or ext4 should be equally fine?
  3. What is the best type of connection between those two PCs for this job? Network over wifi, USB, other?
  4. What's the most reliable and easy application for this back up? Pika/Borg, rsync via GUI(I'm not confident with the terminal and command line, cannot write scripts for planned jobs etc), other?
  5. Both NAS and it's backup "slave" PC will NOT be running any other VMs, or other softwares for me to play and learn. There is another PC for these jobs. A cloud service will have the remote (off site) backup of the absolutely not recoverable data/photos(less than 1TB currently ) I need to preserve. When I become more confident with the current NAS, the next step is to build a second small one at my parents place for a second off site backup (3-2-1 rule sort of)
  6. Truenas scale is my choice for the NAS OS because I want to exploit the benefits of the zfs file system and pay the maximum attention to data safety and integrity. Avoid data rot as much as possible.
  7. I'm planning to start with two 8TB NAS quality (CMR) hard drives in a mirror configuration. The data I have backed up so far in another device are roughly 3.5 TB and would not grow by more than 200-400GB per year I would expect. Will this rate of expansion be covered reliably for say another 5 years by the 8TB total storage I will have in my planned configuration? What is the optimal percentage of storage you would use in a NAS type of HDD in a zfs system? Would you go as high as 90%?
  8. I understand that in truenas is very difficult currently to add new HDD in your existing pool of data if you want to expand your storage in the future. Would it be wiser then to start straight with 3,4, or 5 hard drives and what would be the raid configuration that would give the max protection for data rot - raid 6 or 10?
  9. My budget for hdd is very limited currently and cannot spend more than $300. Is it safe to buy used NAS disks for my low demand system (not many users, very little traffic of data daily, no 24/7 service, probably working mainly in the evenings) if I am going for a pool with more than 2 drives?
  10. I have a single 4TB SMR 3.5" type of HDD. Is this a reliable solution for backups with the help of a USB enclosure? It would be stored in a drawer in my parents place and used only periodically to store some incremental type of backups.

Thanks for getting the time to read all this and for your help.

Is there any plan by any of you who downloaded this data to preserve it to make it available to the wider scientific community? I think it would be reasonably easy to get university libraries to subsidize hosting costs if needed.

I have a decent collection of media I like to play back, and as I'm getting my first server online I have a question: Is there an inherent disadvantage to running media playback directly from my data storage to my TV (using an HDMI cord direct from the server to the screen), vs streaming it (Plex or Jellyfin, for example)

I have always favored just trawling my file explorer for playback and having the storage hooked to the TV, but I have been told that that route is worse for my hardware, and I don't fully understand why yet, so I'm hoping y'all could help teach me.

I'm looking to get a reliable 16tb disk for my PC workstation. It's mostly for file archive. Movies, ISO files, Photos and videos etc. So I won't be using it as a work disk. But I need it too work fine in my Midi Tower PC. I work from with it around 9 hours a day. It's time to retire those old 1,2 and 4 TB drives, I'm at 55000 hours.

But... I still haven't found any posts anywhere from someone that actually used the Exos in a PC, only people using it in NAS. Anyone here with experience?

Right now the EXOS is the cheapest quality drive of that size where I'm from. Will the noise drive me nuts if I'm used to a Samsung Spinpoint F from 12 years ago?
