I know there have been many posts about how long already written data will last on a drive, but what I’m curious about is if I preemptively buy several storage devices and just set them aside until I want to migrate onto them the data I currently have on other drives, is there any risk of some sort of degradation of the unused drives themselves, assuming I keep them in a normal environment?

I’m rebuilding my system and in the process I’m retiring 15 sub 10tb drives. They are wore out and not good for much. What do you guys do with your old drives?

These are on sale right now. Even acasis website is 89 normally and on sale for 59 right now. But Walmart is 34.82 right jow.

Saw it last night. Especially for a 2 bay it's a good price. That is usually the price for 1.

How long do Walmart sales usually last? 1 week?

I want to have a go-bag that contains drives of personal critical data backup.

I already own a SLNT faraday bag so I can put drives in it. But I am thinking about having an actual machine instead of just some ssd in it that I can connect to my local network and back up some specific folders constantly. And when I need to bug out, i can just unplug the power and ethernet and grab the bag and go.

So I am currently thinking about getting a mini-pc with a DAS enclosure with 2.5” ssd.

Any advice?

Hello all!

I tried to do a cross-post on my Android app, but there appeared to be no way for me to add text to the body. Is this an expected behavior? I was able I apply a TAG, but nothing more 😕

I found an old post on here about saving content from Instagram, but it seems many of them no longer work and was hoping for updated recommendations.

I have archived story posts back through 2020 that I would like to download. Additionally, I'd like to download all of my saved posts, so that I can finally let my account drift into the ether.

Any help with this would be appreciated!

My Parent's have a 2012 Time Capsule that looks looks like it bit the dust and stopped broadcasting the wifi. I crack it open, pop out the hard drive, and it appears to be fine. I'd like to copy the back up off the hard drive and drop them on to a new 4th external hard drive, that is connected to there new router. However it appears the time capsule and time machine back up file structures are not exactly the same. The TimeCapsule HDD has 3 partitions, with "DATA" having the .sparsebundle s for each computer that back up to the time machine. When looking at a Time Machine file structure, everything looks to be Backups.backupdb. I'm suspecting that there was some apple magic in the controller that wrote to the time capsule HDD that allowed it to back up more than one computer.

If I copy the .sparsebundle to a new formatted HFS+ drive, canI pop that new drive onto the USB port of a modern router and let time machine the old back ups?

I'm planning on a new gaming PC build soon and would love a case with multiple slots for hard drives for extra storage. But I don't have a massive amount of room for a super big case. Any suggestions?

So I just stumbled here because someone made a joke about another sub being 97% data hoarders and I find that every trending post is about preserving US Government datasets.

How would I be able to help preserve this stuff?

Are there torrents I should be seeking of datasets, or is there something else I, as an outsider to the government, should be doing?

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a USB DAS enclosure to house two 16TB Seagate X20s.

They'll work as separate drives (one is already full), formatted in NTFS and hooked to a Windows 10 machine.

Something that won't suddenly fail and/or corrupt all the data, like Raidsonic (ICY BOX), Sabrent and Orico usually do nowadays... (because of bad thermal mitigation or a bad controller).

A 4-bay is also OK, I don't mind, but my budget is limited to $200 (US). Is there something even remotely reliable anymore? Thank you!

Just like the title says. :)

I'm sure this has been asked before... I did search, but didn't come up with much.

Thank you!

(In the market for a 10+ TB HDD at the moment.)

Idk if Toshiba is better than Seagate or it's the other way around or if they're the exact same. I want that HDD for storing data on the side, outside of a PC, so which is better at this?

Hi everyone,

I need to buy 2/3 12TB or bigger disks. Because of the price I was considering going for refurbished HDDs.

It's possible to know how much a disk has been used? I read abouth the marked being flooded by exos disks used to mine some crypto and I would check it if possible

Can the WH16NS40 write to CD-R's at 4x? If it can't by default, can it do so through certain firmware or somehow else? Or do I just need to buy a different drive to write to CD-R's at 4x?

Hi all. I have some of VIDEO_TS folders and I wanted to play it as a single movie with menu and everything.

VLC and Kodi works fine with ISO and the VOB video file, but it won't play the VIDEO_TS.IFO file.

I've use an app called ISO Craft to create an ISO file, but both VLC and Kodi failed to play the ISO.

While MX Player still don't support ISO playback. Thanks in advance.

This is not a political post.

Hey there hoarders, I've been lurking here for a while but I dont think I really qualify to wear the DH honorific. (I only have 32TB deployed, but there are plans for expansion in the future)

I recently got into self-hosting and dont have much use for media servers (Jellyfin etc) but I did a JF anyway cos thats what everyone does.

Then I discovered I liked the idea of archiving all the useful instructions/tutorials/guides/reviews etc from youtube that have helped me in the past and shoving them into Jelyfin, having channels and playlist and subject areas I can easily jump into.

I use JDowloader2 with youtube plugin and though its been great I really wish I had the ability to downlaod the video description at the same time. is there any way to do that and have it as an html file in an efficent way. as a lot of the vids often have links in thir descriptions to other websites for files and related resources and info.

Thanks for your help

I mean like, hundreds of textbooks, thousands of research papers, and lectures, all on as many subjects as possible, especially high end advanced ones.

Basically, if my hoard can't get barely literate post apocalypse tribes advanced enough to make their own antibiotics and vaccines, and get them to refine their own fuel and integrate their own circuits, then I've failed.

If I'm getting information, I'm getting ALL the information.

So please, point me in some directions.
