Hello currently running a MS-01 and want to add some HDD to it via a JBOD its running unraid and my rack from back wall to the front rail is 325mm max.

I found the qnap 4 bay one (TL-R400S) but its 291.1mm and im not sure if the SFF 8088 connector will have enough room at the rear.

they also do it with usb but the speeds max out around 250mb/s seems like a big sacrifice to get a more compact connector on the rear its not even cheaper.

My friend and I are planning on getting two NASes, one for each of our homes. We want to be able to essentially mirror them so if one of our houses burn down or something happens, the other’s NAS still has both of our stuff. We also want to be able to easily save photos and videos from our phones and so on to get rid of iCloud.

The two top options I’ve found so far are the Synology DS1522+ and the Ubiquiti UNAS Pro.

What do you guys think? I’m new to all this so any advice or help is appreciated!

Hi all,

I usually buy my games from gog.com, but I'm not actually in the habit downloading and backing up the offline installers (which is kind of the whole point).

In my experience with hard drives and photos there's usually at least some amount of bit rot after a while so I was wondering how folks here would go about this.

I was considering investing in a Blu-ray burner, but I don't know if that has other issues.

Thanks in advance.

How many of you are concerned about the potential for catastrophic data loss from a potential EMP event in a SOHO environment?

Large corporations and huge network solutions are often too complex and expensive for a “little guy”, but yet we too often have data that is critical that we can not afford to lose. As technology enables us to move in a paperless direction for all of its obvious benefits, I rarely hear any discussion of potential loss to an EMP…perhaps the most devastating risk we face.

Sure, I have backups both on and off-site, RAID arrays, NAS drives and more. But in the blink of an eye, all of that could be wiped out! How do we protect ourselves?

Husband works as a music supervisor in film/TV and has a giant personal collection of music. The current library is about 12TB and always growing. He has it on a RAID drive connected to his Mac Book Pro M3. The last two weeks the external drive keeps ejecting itself. This was an issue before with Mac and we switched to a Terramaster Thunderbolt RAID enclosure to avoid any adapters in the middle. It has been mostly stable until about two weeks ago. It has self ejected four times in two weeks.

There are two back-ups of the RAID device. One on an external Seagate USB 20TB drive that he uses Carbon Copy Cloner on at least once a week and the other on a Synology NAS unit in the house (2 Samsung 20TB drives).

Since the Terramaster is starting to act up, which brand would you switch to? I assume we're going to have rebuild from scratch if swap the drives out of the Terramaster to the new unit or just get new drives and treat the current RAID as another back-up. I believe it is a RAID 1 set-up currently in the Terramaster with Samsung 20TB drives.

Thoughts? Laptop is up to date on OSX.

Hello all, as the title states I am raising funds to make a website with important information about everything the US regime has done and plans to do to destroy the America we all know and love. The America that stood for social progress and thought was definitely not perfect, was working toward getting better. I need the funds so I can focus on this full time and pay for things like website hosting, and apis for data. You can find the link to the GoFundMe page here. I go by Sam as an online pseudonym however if you would like to know me personally so you can trust me better, please dm me.

If you cannot donate please forward to others and hopefully I can reach my goal soon. We honestly don't have time. The revolution is now!

I'm having a weird issue with a VeraCrypt encrypted file container (exFAT):

Some files appear in Explorer and other software but can't be opened and they give "file not found" errors. When I right-click the mounted volume in VeraCrypt and choose "Check Filesystem", the CMD window shows no problems:

Checking the file system on the VeraCrypt volume mounted as E:...
The type of the file system is exFAT.
The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while trying to process the specified operation.

Volume Serial Number is ****-****
Windows is verifying files and folders...
Volume label is encrypted.
File and folder verification is complete.

Windows has scanned the file system and found no problems.
No further action is required.
[...]
         0 KB in bad sectors.
[...]

The container otherwise works fine, but this rarely happens with random files.

How can I pinpoint what's wrong and fix it? I can also use Linux terminal if that helps.

Hi,

I'm caught in another "tidying and cleaning" moment, where I try to optimize my directory tree, directory names, and ensure that everything is applied and goes into my backups.

Before blindly commiting to barely chosen names for e.g. datasets, I was thinking that, since I really terrible with naming, I would try to actually gather information about organization systems, and naming schemes, and maybe suggested names from this community.

I've seen good organization systems and naming schemes being mentioned here but I cannot find them back.

So, please, let me know what you use, and why not suggest names or directory tree for some media while you're at it?

Thanks in advance.

Hey all,

Having trouble finding a case.

I want a decent looking case that has a lot of bays. I want one DVD in the slots and at least 2 or preferably 3 more bays (4 total) for quick swap, using something like: https://imgur.com/a/mYRB4J2

I also would love if it had a dual fan layout for 140mm AIO

I have used external hdds and have issues, since I need to be able to pop in a drive, power it on, boot from it or use a it for VM, and move files between everything.

They need to be easily removed.

Currently I only have 1 5.25" bay with one 3.5" removable drive slot, I'm making it work but I'm constantly switching cables, adding external drives, and using work arounds.

I've been looking locally for resale, hoping to nab an old PC that fits the bill, but have had no such luck

Anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks!

Hello,

I've typically bought samsung in the past but am not sure if the firmware fix is a work around or a real fix for some of the newer models? For all I know they are all made by the same company and have the same issue or there is a better brand to get.

I saw an older thread from a few years ago where Shogun6996 was talking about scanning magazines. I work for a magazine company that had its backups go bad. They have an archive of old magazines they are looking to digitize to TIFFs. We are looking for advice on what would be the best equipment to use that others who are digitizing mags are using. TIA for any advice

Apologies for the amateur nature of this question, but I've been running small SSD backups for years and want to upgrade my setup.

Can I buy one of these refurbed enterprise drives with SATA and run it on a Mac desktop?

It seems I could just buy a SATA to USB/Thunderbolt adapter and an enclosure and be set. Do I need anything else? Will transfer speed be compromised by the adapter? Will the OS recognize the drive?

I just don't want to chuck money at a paperweight. Thanks in advance.

I have an a Samsung QVO TB SSD and I want to hook it up to an LSI HBA 9500-16e. I need to prove that DRAT / ZRAT is supported to use the HBA. I have a windows machine and a raspberry pi. Is there an ELI5 guide to help me prove this? I used SMARTMonTools and got the following result but I'm unclear if this is definitive proof.

TRIM Command: Available, deterministic, zeroed

I do plan on moving to UnRAID and using a ZFS pool but can't do so until I can solve for this. Appreciate any help you can offer.

Greetings,

i got my Seagate 12TB HDD today, and just launched the smartmontools farmlog, because i read some stories recently about Seagate HDDs.

It is an used HDD (open box, condition like new).

What do you think about those logs? The power on hours are likey correct, but the rest is so weird.

The Power on Hours of the FARM and SMART Log are identical.

Can FARM Logs be faked too?

I planned to use this Disk as a Backup for my NAS (4x4TB Raid5).

Thanks for your help guys.

Output of farmlog:

Sorry if it's been beaten to death, Google, et. al. seem useless so turning to you guys. (second sorry if this doesn't belong here).

In the vaguest terms, my de facto job responsibilities involve scrambling to preserve massive dumps of old MS Word/Excel files (1997-2003). Was able to circumvent it in a hit-or-miss type converting to PDF since the Windows 11 upgrade, so 18 month or so.

Until this last week. Trust centers, cannot enable content, etc.

Is anyone else in this boat? Please, if you are, what are you doing about it?

Running Asustor 3402t v2 with 4 4TB Iron wolf drives. Over 45,000 hour on drives. What is the process for replacing them? one drive at a time?

So, I just got a duplex batch scanner, but unlike the insanely expensive machine at my job, this one does not have a function to automatically split images and keep them in order. I'm scanning de-stapled magazines, so a scan of one physical page will provide 2 files with 2 images per file, and of course the page sequence is all over the place.

I've tried the popular stuff like VueScan and NAPS2 and Scan Tailor without much luck. I just received a trove of old car and wrestling magazines that I'm anxious to get uploaded to IA!

I want to have my own NAS at home. I found an ad on FB for 100 drives that total 90TB.

This is the specs:

900GB Mixed Brands x 100 DRIVES

2.5in SAS HDD

10k @ 6Gb/s

Is this suitable for a new NAS?

Edit: drives are apparently from a datacenter upgrade.

Soo long story short, I have an backplane that is 8643 connectors with each one going to 4 slots/drives. I just found out that HBA is getting turned off due to how many pcie cards I have and I can't give up any more of them.

So my question is is it possible for me to just put a SFF-8643 into the backplane and put the 4 sata breakouts into my motherboard?

Something like this?

What is the typical internet bandwidth(in Gbps) / storage capacity (in GB) ratio for decentralized storage service (such as storj ) nodes?

in other words, if the bandwidth is 1Gbps, Is there a limit of storage capacity X, more than X GB is not useful?
