I just bought a gaming laptop lately, upgraded it with an extra SSD, and transferred all my old files and data to the new machine. Then, during an overseas trip, for some reason I got totally no clue, I put it in my checked luggage. You can probably guess what happened next—rough baggage handling completely destroyed it.

After a long argument with the airline, they did reimburse me for the laptop, but a lot of my data was lost. Sure, all the important files were backed up, but I had so many photos and videos that weren’t exactly ""important"" but still really precious to me. Since I never had the habit of backing those up, I ended up losing more than half of them. Super frustrating.

Have you guys ever had a similar experience? How did you deal with it afterward?

I've got some 4TB EVO Samsung's that have been great but I'm working on a big video editing project that's 5.6TB right now so I'd like to get a big 8TB SSD. Only problem is the only Samsung I see that big is the QVO for $500ish and it'd got terrible reviews on speed - which is important for editing.

Any other 8TB SSD's that can be recommended that have good speed? I thought about possibly using a m2 drive inside an enclosure but the limit of the enclosure speed seems like it'd kill the speed benefit of the drive.

Will want to store the project long term on the same drive after.

Appreciate the tips.

I've looked at several options but none quite hitting the mark. I just want to lump a non-redundant 20 TB hard drive in a friends house with enough OS to map it to Tailscale for my offsite backup.

A Synology or QNAP is overkill and also restrictive when it comes to Tailscale.

What options does the sub recommend?

So a friend recently asked me to recommend them a NAS, they're currently using their gaming PC but their wife gets annoyed when they're doing an update or something and can't watch 'their Netflix' (Jellyfin).

So I've seen the small 4-bay Synology / QNAP type stuff we will use at work for a small local backup solution and thought great cheap little solution... And they're entry level stuff is like AU$800! Because I've been looking at a little N100 system, that and a nice NAS Case would run me under AU$500, and it would be way more capable etc.

So what's between a cheap DIY NAS and a pre-built system? Because if I build something for them, I'm going to be maintaining that thing for the rest of my life!

So they don't need a whole lot of processing power they'd probably want like 2 Jellyfin streams, most likely just direct play but transcoding is wanted. 4 drives is probably enough. An I missing some part of the market?

So im sad that in my favorite genre of music there isn't a lot of officially released concerts in DVD.

I thought about going on youtube to find full/parts of concerts and burning* them to DVDs as a way of having them physically and offline.

Which are the things I need to pay attention to in order to max out the image and sound quality?

Edit: I'm considering storing it in a pen or even an HDD for quality sake, thanks everyone and RIP DVD

So I’m tossing around the idea of buying a synology as an upgrade from my old WD ex2 ultra that’s almost 10 years old and I’m running out of room. I just need something for file storage. No plex. Just file storage only.

I have a DS224 in my cart and 2 8tb drives.

I have an old PC I built years ago that’s been sitting in the basement. It has the following.

NZXT H510 case

Intel Core i5-4690

MSI MSI Gaming Z97 GAMING 5 LGA 1150 Intel Z97

8gig of ram.

I have played with the online demo of DSM and watched several videos of synology setups and really like that software.

Would it just make more sense to save the cost and throw the two drives in this PC and install some sort of NAS software?

Now granted I don’t have a spot big enough to put this tower. Whereas the synology can sit in the cabinet and I can forget about it and also the synology probably uses less power.

Ooooor. Should I try and sell it and buy a better/bigger synology?

Hi there.

I have a server in which I'm using MergerFS to, well, merge every drive together.

Recently I decided I was going to upgrade the storage on it (as I still have some low storage SSDs inside) and getting some good amounts of TB storage in HDD.

That being said, whenever I do, it'll make sense to setup redundancy.

However, as I have some directories that have files that are not that important, I'd like to not consider them for redundancy. Is this possible at all?

TL;DR: I'm looking for ways to set up redundancy know I use MergerFS and I want some directories not to be considered for said redundancy.

Thanks in advance!

Odd situation. Crowdcast has bugged out and the vod for a particular stream is no longer available on desktop. However, I have a link that will prompt me to open it in the app, and that works for some reason. Naturally that only works on mobile, there's no prompt when using that link on desktop, it just throws and error and says the event doesn't exist.

I should also clarify that the creator has commented that they didn't delete the vod and that their communications with Crowdcast about restoring it have gone nowhere.

All that to say, I can still watch the video on mobile, or on a mobile emulator on my desktop, but short of screen recording, I can't think of any way to capture the vod (and I'd very much like to as I don't know how long this workaround will last). I've used the old "F12 -> Network -> .m3u8" trick before to download vods, but I can't inspect element in and app on mobile.

Any ideas?

Is there some way to intercept the traffic and pull the raw video out that way? I'm a hardware guy so I'm out of my depth with this.

I ordered a 20TB WD HDD from Amazon and it came with NO padding inside the Amazon box. So it's just the HDD box inside Amazon's flimsy thin box, which got slightly crushed somewhere during the shipping process. The HDD box is fine. There is no "FRAGILE" indicated on the Amazon box anywhere. When I shake the HDD box, I hear a slight rattle inside, not sure if it's from inside the HDD or some non-essential parts like the extension cord rattling because it came loose.

I'm incredibly disappointed in Amazon. This is a very expensive drive. I've had $2 tapes arriving in abundantly thick paper padding.

Q1: Is there a legit concern of something like a bolt in the drive becoming loosened from the shipping that years down the road it would break earlier than had it not been loosened? I.e. could the careless shipping have caused any hardware problems that can't be detected with software drive health check yet?

If so, I have to ask Amazon to replace the drive when it's back in stock again, and I hope it's packaged better this time.

Q2: Where do you guys buy drives that would ensure good packaging? I REALLY NEED A BIG WD HDD and if Amazon often sucks, where can I go buy one that has been shipped and handled with care? I don't care if I pay a bit more.

My seller was Amazon.com, would a smaller seller on Amazon do a better job (any seller in particular to recommend)?

Any recommendations of other online places where they ship with care and where I can buy this large WD drive?

Or is a physical store better? Microcenter? Best Buy?

Hey Guys,

Just want to know if anyone has had a similar experience?... I have used iDrive just fine for several years and like the backup to network drive functionality. Recently my credit card expired and because it was attached to an email I don't check often, they "cancelled my account" and the app says to contact support to "re-activate your account" This would imply they obviously still have all your stuff but just pay us and well turn you back on.... I'm sure they could restore it easily from their cold storage or incremental backups etc. After finally finding this out they say my account is cancelled and if I decide to sign up again I have to be ok with them having deleted my data. They check and say "My data is gone". YES it's my fault, I have most of the stuff but I'm not sure "what I'm missing", It's quite worrying that the whole point of their company is an online backup company and they said if I decide to reactivate my account data is gone just because my cc expires for a little while (A little more than a month). EDIT Just check they only give you 10 days to actually know about it or they delete ALL your data...

I bought this 'new old stock' Samsung T7 SSD. It's connected fine to a couple of Mac Minis the last few days. Just plugged in to my (2015) laptop MBPro using 3.0 adapter and - doesn't even read it. WTF? I just got this thing - it's said to be like new. Blue indicator on T7 shows a connection. If this is throwing a connection error i have a return window. Any other recommendations appreciated.

My storage system can only read SAS HDDs, and my Seagate Exos 18TB sre not recognized due to this. Is there any way to flash them so they identify as SAS drives?

Hi lads, first of all, I LOVE IT in here. Great to know i am not the only one who feels the need to secure his favorite movies in 4k and then never watch them.

Ok, so I’ve literally been thinking about a NAS for years, never pulled the trigger which I believe I will now, mainly for Plex and backing up family photos and less than 5GB of work files. I own several external hard drives but I mainly need like 2-3TB of storage (knowing I need to copy the movies from my computer to the HHD attached to my TV makes me just skip downloading the damn thing altogether, but knowing I can run Plex with ease will mean I’m downloading a lot more in the future.

So the main event, how much do I need? I have several copies of my main stuff so I might not go for RAID1 just yet so I’ll be buying a two bay NAS (what I can afford for now) and stick one drive in for now and add another in a few months (that’s financing).

I am thinking of adding a single 12TB drive (I know far more than I’ll probably ever need!) then add another either for more storage if I need it (unlikely) or to RAID1 it. What do you think? Thank you.

Alright, I'm very new to all of this data hoarding, but I have a Raspberry Pi I'm getting set up to hold all of Wikipedia and Wikihow in an OS someone made specifically for off-grid scenarios, and I've played around with Raspian to play stuff over VLC, but I can't even get my cron jobs to work, so I want you to know that this is NOT my forte, I'm a hardware guy. Can somebody, please, explain to me, like I'm a child, how to set up Tube Archivist? I don't know if this can be put on an laptop I can pop on the network or if I need a NAS server(which I almost know what that is), or if it could run on a Pi. I have no idea what a Docker is, and trying to find out made my head hurt. I watched a YouTube tutorial and the guy lost me ten seconds in by talking about dependencies I had never heard of. I was gonna use yt-dl, but that needed Python and command lines and my head already hurts trying to use the one with a GUI. Please, can someone help this software illiterate repair man horde useful videos? And if someone felt like explaining Cron to me, I wouldn't be upset.

I've got an external USB Fantom hard drive from around 2010 ; I can hear it spin and click, and spin and then click. Is there a possibility that it could be fixed?

decided to get the 5TB game drive from WD. its for videos game and extra storage but can be used for anything really. i like that its a fast drive so transferring movies to it wont be much issue it will be much better than my 4tb WD elements drive which surprisingly costs the same and is much slower and one less TB. being that its for gaming its going to be able to be cycled down often as ill be using this for streaming my movies with Plex so itll be on and off daily. i was going to get a mybook but im pretty sold on this drive. would like to know the opinions of others who own this drive?

Basically what the title says! I need something rack-mount that can take 3.5 inch SATA drives that isnt much more power than the bare drives (power can be pretty $$$ where I live). Low noise would be much appreciated if possible as well! Any ebay-findable server ewaste that fits the bill?
