I was doing CCC backups from the thunderbay 4 to this 20TB USB drive. It's now full as we begin to import more client data... do I just make the investment on buying another unit to match the drive space?

I am building a small DAS to hold my media for a plex server and I am planing to use the Terramaster D2-320, a two bay enclosure with USB 3.2 10gbits interface that supports RAID 0, RAID 1, Single and JBOD.

Ultimately i'd like to setup the DAS with 2x 20TB NAS-Rated drives and set it up in RAID 1 to make sure my data remain safe on the long term. However, I only have enough budget for a single 20TB drive at this step.

Is it possible to setup the first 20TB in the DAS as a single drive and then later add an additional 20TB in the second enclosure and switch the DAS to hardware RAID 1? Would that reformat my drives or would i simply use the drive and mirror it with its actual data? Or should I set it up directly to RAID 1 but with only one drive for now (which would put the DAS in error i am guessing?)

Or.. should just go straight with 2x 8TB and be stuck later (I am already close to that amount in various drives I want to consolidate). I'd much rather start with 20TB straight but can't afford going RAID 1 from the start. Unfortunately the DAS unit doesn't seem to come with any precise information about this scenario. Please advice!

Computer storage details like this aren't really my wheelhouse, so I was hoping someone may be able to help with some advice. I am doing my own research but figured asking would be good to have my bases covered.

I was using a 2021 4TB WD 'my passport', wd40nmzm, as my archive drive to store games, music, books, etc for the past few years. It was bought from a reputable place. It died last night, as confirmed by a repair guy who evaluated it. It was always stored in a drawer, never dropped, and once something was copied there it stayed there. The biggest changes I made were renaming files to organize things. It didn't get a lot of extended, heavy use. The most use it ever had at one time was a 6 hour copy session last weekend when I started backing up some data to another drive. Bad luck, I guess. I was planning to just throw it into my desktop to try my luck ataccessing it, but it seems like this is one that can't be shucked and installed because of its native usb connection. Lesson learned

I was sizing up replacement options and hoping to get something that can be shucked and plugged into a desktop in a pinch like this, if possible. I'm avoiding WD from now on. I was sizing up a Seagate Expansion Portable 4TB drive, 4000400 unit at Costco. Are they generally considered reliable? They seem suckable from what I saw.

Other options I have are ADATA HV620s, Transcend Storejet 25M3 and 25H3 series, and the Toshiba Canvio Basics and Flex series. I haven't sized them up in detail for quality yet. The Costco drive is the best value per GB. I will be getting a new portable ssd for more important data, but I want this for storing 'nice to have', but not crucial data in case I move somewhere with data caps on downloads, etc

Hello friends!

I currently have a lot of videos hosted on Telegram, but I don't feel safe leaving them there. I'm trying to find alternatives, but nothing that I can afford easily. I need something like 20T, costing a maximum of 20 dollars per month. Does anyone have an alternative that could help me?

Hi all. I'm in the market for a DAS or NAS. I've been eyeing the D4-320 for its affordability/value right now and most likely will pair it with an laptop.

I see that it is USB3. Which led me to the question of what is the best way to connect a DAS to a laptop/desktop? I've been seeing some options like USB, Thunderbolt, SATA, eSATA, SCSI, SAS, etc. I'm trying to get a feel for what the options are so I can expand my search.

Will USB3 bottleneck or limit my future scaling options?

Thanks in advance

Both so the fan niche can still work and so the drives get a bit of cooling. I've been having trouble finding a good one. Trying to find something that presents the drives narrow side on to the airflow.

Hey guys

As many of you who need storage for backups and other information I am currently using a portable 1TB Toshiba hard drive. But it's somewhat annoying because its larger size and requires a cord to connect to PC.

I was thinking are there more portable options, like a USB stick or SD card you can recommend around 1-2TB capacity?

Also is there an option that provides encrypted storage? i.e. a window with pop up that requires you to enter password to view files? Because right now I have to manually add the files that I want hidden to password protected 7z archives, which is time-consuming and annoying.

Short rundown - I use a 12 TB hard drive and have a back up hard drive for this along with dropbox I'm paying $120 a month for especially when I need to share files.

Currently, the amount of data I have keeps getting larger and larger and soon the 12 TB won't be enough for me. The videography company user servers along with cyber duck to share and transfer files. Would a server be a good route to go going forward or should I just upgrade to a larger hard drive? My apologies I'm a total noob :,)

see title. I want to download an offline archive of a tumblr account including text posts and images, but I'm not sure the best way to do it. I've looked online but I see people recommending a ton of different tools, so I'm not sure what's best. I would like to preserve formatting as well.

I grabbed a seagate X ST28000NM000C 28TB CMR hard disk as I figured I may as well consolidate a tad. 28TB can handle a lot of everything but then again this group has been a favorite,

I noticed some WD HAMR class disks out there but Seagate has the big juicy 10 platter beast.

I use LTO-6 tape backup system and I'm using Windows 10/11 installed in my computer. Backup to LTO is flawlessly smooth when I turn off Windows Defender. But the problem is... when I restore files in my LTO tape to hard drive it copies about 256MB and it rewinds to the tape reel's front and goes back to copy more 256MB and it repeats. I definitely turned off Windows Defender and it doesn't seem to fix. How can I solve this issue? Should I use macOS or Linux-based OS?

  • I just use Windows file manager or TeraCopy.

Hi all, I am looking into getting my first NAS (considering a synology or Ugreen 4bay) but one of my major challenges is finding a place to put the unit. My router is tucked behind my TV in my family room and I can't rearrange things in a way there for a NAS to fit.

There is a very convenient space in my basement right next to my ONT (I have Verizion Fios ONT I-211M-K).

I'm new to all this but I wouldn't be surprised if bypassing my router to connect directly to the ONT posed a security risk but I don't know if that's true or whether there are some extra precautions I could take to make this less risky. I appreciate any help and apologies if this is not the proper thread to ask something like this!

Hello.

I'm looking for something like ctrl+s in browser (it creates html and a subfolder for images) of currently opened content in browser.

Note: ctrl+s also doesn't work nicely often (it creates broken html). I'd like to save currently opened web page (browser's DOM) which might be behind login and similar, so separate scrapers can't really do the job. I'd like self-hosted solution which would be convenient to organize. What's best webclipper in 2025?

I know there are plenty of webclippers, to fit in a workflow of note taking apps (obsidian, notion, evernote, etc), but it could be impractical for something more heavy (videos, a long article, etc). I would like to save "original" separately.

Thanks

I'm not looking to download each and every video in my TikTok favorites. But I also don't want to download individual videos one at a time, either.

Is there a way I can just enter the URL for a publicly visible collection and then instantly download all the videos in that collection (and ONLY in that ONE collection) in one fell swoop?

Hello, I have been looking into some simple NAS setup/solutions for backing up data from my desktop.

I am mainly wanting to do a weekly or semi-weekly backup of important files for me such as Documents, Photos, and AppData Folders along with my files HDD (Currently 2 TB, may upgrade to 4 TB) which contains a lot of Unity, Blender, and Substance Projects.

After doing some research I was thinking a 2-bay solution with 2 4 TB possibly 8 TB drives with a 1 drive redundancy. I was looking at my local Micro Center and I found these NAS:

What are y'alls thoughts and suggestions?

Hey guys, I am looking at building a NAS with true Nas and I am just looking at motherboards

It's proving quite hard to find matx board with 8 sata ports on and I wondered if there anything I need to know about there 6 and 8 pcie X1 sata cards

Questions

Does it matter what kind of PCIE port i put it in, can PCIE X1 really handle 6 or 8 drives or am.i going to see a dramatic reduction in speed?

Are they reliable or should I shell out the extra for a 8 sata mobo instead of a cheaper mobo and a card.

Fyi I have 5 4tb drives for a raid, and the 2 2tb for a mirror and I might use the extra for a small SSD cache drive as I have one spare

Thanks in advance for any replies!!!

I've searched, but not scene alot about pixwox.com and imginn.com mentioned. No account needed, but i need 2 use link scraper and scroll through full page to then put into a downloader and get content.

There must be a faster way with scripting/plugin some sort?

I am trying to move my Plex server to a newer machine, an OptiPlex 7060 SFF with an i5-8500. I am currently storing the data on 2 x 1tb SSD SATA drives and plan to run Windows 11 from another SSD. This machine is also used for other small tasks, so keeping it a Windows machine is my preference. The machine only has room for 2 SATA, and one would be the boot drive. I purchased a PCIe to SATA controller from Amazon along with StarTech SATA power splitter. Installed the card and connected a drive and it is not recognized by the Windows 11 machine. In the BIOS it shows the PCIe slot as empty. I've tried the card in a Windows 10 machine as well and it was not recognized. There are lights on the card that turn on for each SATA drive connected, and those are lighting up. Anyone have any idea why this isn't recognized by my machine?

Need some advice on how to go about creating accurate dumps for Playstation games, as I've started backing up my physical PS1/PS2 library. Not really experienced with this kind of stuff, as the most I've done with dumping/backing up games is with my DS/3DS library. Also I'm in the UK so most of the backups I'm creating are based on the PAL/European versions of games.

Currently I'm going to be using Media Preservation Frontend to create the backups for PS1/PS2 at least, while using RomVault to help with sorting and verifying them. I'm also using an external disc drive that I bought some time ago but haven't used till now to read these discs too.

Made one backup for a PS2 game for testing purposes which worked fine. RomVault showed it matched with Redump's database/dat file, I booted it up in an emulator and it ran fine. But when it comes to PS1 games, there's the hurdle of trying to make accurate backups, mainly for games that have multiple tracks or "subchannels" from what I can tell.

A lot of guides I've seen just tell you to ImgBurn to dump the game, which creates a single .bin and .cue file and that'll be fine. I used Pac-Man World for testing, as it has multiple tracks, and from the small bit of testing it does seem to work in an emulator despite merging all the tracks into one .bin file. But I've heard that this method can potentially have issues with missing or broken audio. Not to mention that RomVault is looking for the separate track files, not the merged ones

The problem is that to create an accurate dump I need to use compatible Optical Disc Drives, a lot of them are pretty old. I tried looking up some of the Plextor drives that Redump recommends using my PC setup doesn't let me install internal disc drives, so I assume I'll need some adapters to even connect it up to my PC via USB or some other method.

Most guides that deal with multiple tracks involve doing the opposite (merging them all into one .bin file) which is not what I want. I kept seeing mentions of using some software called "CloneCD" as part of the process when it comes to dumping PS1 games, but most mentions of it say they used it "back in the day" and not if it even works on modern systems. Not to mention if the versions of CloneCD or other software like Daemon Tools you can find online aren't riddled with Malware.

Essentially, does anyone have experience with how to go about creating accurate PS1 backups these days that could recommend the right setup and equipment I can use? Or am I just better off just using ImgBurn with what I have now?

Again I'm not experienced with this type of thing so help would be appreciated.

For various reasons, I try to avoid multi drive enclosures. Normally, I go for Orico single hdd enclosure (right my largest are 14TB). Since I'm looking into going for larger (20+ TB) hdds, I'm looking into other brands and models (my usual go to has an upper limit of 16 TB).

Any recommendations? I prefer enclosure over mounts but I'm open to either

I have a pretty modest cd collection I've cultivated over the years. After having ripped the whole collection probably 3 times now on to computers that eventually bite the dust, I'm looking into getting an external hard drive just for the purposes of storing my music. I'm aware that hard drives will inevitably fail as well but it feels more stable then my cheapo $300 laptop and will save me the storage on my computer. The 'catch' to all of this, i am totally oblivious when it comes to this stuff. So beyond even knowing which one to pick, when i do go to do this, is it as simple as plugging it into my computer and ripping it onto there instead? Is there any sort of formatting or setting up ill have to do? I'm also going to need an external disc drive so i would love suggestions on one of those as well. I really don't know anything when it comes to this stuff so please try to dumb down your language as much as possible, like your talking to your grandma but she's actually 25 so not completely oblivious lol. Your opinions and in put are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance

Finally getting into data hoarding. I don’t have any music files so I’m getting everything off of Soulseek. Decided to go with FLAC since this is a long term project and I figure do it right the first time. I’ve got a 2TB external SSD that’s going to act as my primary storage solution for right now, which I think should be more than enough for a couple thousand FLAC songs.

I’m using MusicBee to organize everything - I know it’s not the most recommended program I see but I like the UI and it has all the metadata features I feel like I need.

I haven’t seen too many posts here or elsewhere about music storage so I’m just wondering if this is a solid plan or not. It’s my first time doing anything like this so tips are appreciated.
