I just found out this offer on WD's site and it's the best price per TB I've seen so far at $16.66/TB. My use case is mainly as a media drive to stream content to my TV. Is this a good deal or am I missing something?

I'm not in a hurry, so if there better deals usually come up on Black Friday or something like that, I'd be okay waiting.

I am thinking about how I may want to rejigger my backups (I already follow 3-2-1 but I want to change it up).

My backup tool (one I wrote myself, dfb) is append-only. It ends up being a mix of small and large files but either way, the normal operation only appends data.

I know they say it's not great for frequently-changing data but (a) I do not know what is considered frequent here and (b) I am wondering if frequently appended data also fits that.

What are your thoughts?

Getting ready to build a 12x20 system and trying to decide what to put on it. I already run Unraid, TrueNAS CORE and Proxmox. I am thinking SCALE due to better docker and VM support now, but not sure if maybe Proxmox is a better choice. I could throw it all on Unraid, but I haven't had as much stability there (my own fault, usually). Anyone have suggestions and/or horror stories? Many thanks.

Rather cheap if possible, and I'm not working with much space on my computer desk. I have a height restriction. To describe my desk, it has the main portion where my monitor rests, to the right there is a raised platform where my second monitor sits, and I currently keep the one HD I have there (I'm ordering a second), and underneath that raised platform is where my computer case rests. There is enough room for me to stack the HDs with a little extra space, and was curious if I could use something like the pink erasers (one on each corner, the oblong ones) at each corner of the bottom HD to rest the new one on top. Ghetto, I know. But I can't seem to find any other type of rack that I could fit them both onto while also remaining in that space below the platform my second monitor sits. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, as you can tell my idea probably isn't the best lol

I created a free tool to export Facebook post comments to Excel without limits. Feel free to use it!

Happy scraping!

Just looking to see if there's something that may be faster and still relatively cheap and can be bought in bulk like this PNY 256GB Turbo Attaché 3 USB 3.0 Flash Drive 3-Pack? Currently going for $38. I'd be willing to pay $10-25 more for much faster drives that are reliable.

Because it has nothing in it but it tells me I need administration access to delete the folder so I think it's needed for the hard drive to function probably

What I mean by that is for example even if I only liked a single song from an album, I want it to download the whole album. It would be huge work to go through thousands of tracks manually so I need some highly automated method to do this for me.

These are really underground songs and 90% of them isn't archived anywhere and there have been examples of them completely disappearing after removed from streaming

Hi happy hoarders. I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post but you might be my only hope. I've been searching for a song for over 20 years from my days as a youth. I downloaded it off limewire at the time. It was labled as "All my Friends - Able" I had this song burnt to disc for years but was lost to time. I can still remember the lyics, melody and can almost hear it. But I've not been able to find it anywhere since. Please help my obiwanhoarders you're my only hope.

Believe it or not I did search before posting a new 'what's instagram' topic and read them, but all seemed to have issues. Essentially my use case (work related) - I used 4kStogram previously, which allowed for mass bulk updates and story downloads. However with it being abandonware now and getting logged out between every user scan (I check over 200) it's not really practical anymore.

I've seen here about some command prompt software and others that work downloading photos/vids but not stories. Is there a PC (Win desktop) single mass downloader with a UI (important) that I can set to do a daily 'one click' update check the same as 4KStogram?

I've officially reached a data hoarding crossroads. With 226TB spread across 24x12TB drives, I'm down to my last 36TB. To most common folks, 36TB sounds like a huge amount of storage—my friends look at me confused because their devices barely hold 1TB. Yet, they never complain while binge-watching content from my Plex.

Now I'm faced with the harsh reality of upgrade costs. I can't fit more drives, and upgrading to 22TB drives isn't financially practical at the moment. Soon, I may have to do the unthinkable: delete some data.

Any advice or solidarity from fellow hoarders is welcome. How are you coping with storage limitations?

I have good number of DVD's that I haven't been able to find anywhere online. What's the best place I can archive these movies without them getting taken down? They're obscure enough I'm sure no one will care but they're still under copyright so I don't want to take a chance.

Hello, not sure if this is the right sub for this. I have a 465 GB SSD as my boot drive on my windows 11 machine. This afternoon, I realized that my free space on it went from 110 to 150 GB.

How is this possible? Windows recently performed TRIM on it (it's set to do it weekly) but could it really free up that much space? I never turned on storage sense either. Should I be worried about storage being lost?

I learnt all the makemkv and handbrake stuff but I can't do that for a massive collection.

I am willing to invest a couple hundred dollars to get my jellyfin up to snuff, what is the best "one button" system for this?

Hello everyone this is my first post on this subreddit. Excuse my formatting because I'm on my phone. Is there some kind of group chat like Discord where we archive Tiktok videos. For example i downloaded those via myfavett, but there are many deleted videos i cannot access. Plus i have requested data from Tiktok themselves that shows me a list of urls of my favorite videos. Considering that those urls contain the video id and the downloaded videos also have the id as the title wouldn't it be useful if we could ask each other a specific video? I wasn't sure if this is the right sub to ask this question so i apologize in advance. Thanks!

My data storage mediums, post 17 (36th week)

I had another, much better search through the bad RAM bin and was able to find regular SDR SDRAM and a DDR-3 stick of RAM which helps me to fill out a few more empty spots on my silicon cornice (that’s what I’m going to call it from now on as most of the stuff going on there is going to be silicon based).

The DDR-3 stick has 240 pins which is the same amount as DDR-2 but the key has changed positions as to prevent putting the wrong memory in, the benefit with DDR-3 is that there are low power modules available for cases where lower power consumption is required, this is done by reducing the voltage that the silicon needs to store the data but it may have some disadvantages like slightly slower access speeds.

Mentioned in my previous post about SDRAM, it stands for Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory which means that the operation of its pin interface is coordinated with an external clock signal, some of the earlier DRAM modules were often synchronized with the CPU clock speed, there were two types of operation which was called synchronous where changes on control inputs are recognised on the rising edge of its clock input unlike asynchronous interface in which input control signals have a direct effect on internal functions delayed only by the trip across its semiconductor pathways, this SDR SDRAM was eventually eclipsed by DDR memory which was made by IBM.

Thank you for reading this Friday‘s post and I hope you have a great day, if you have any queries, thoughts about the format, additional information or to point out a mistake, please put them in the comments :)

All of my RAM right now (there wasn’t any laptop RAM in the bad ram bin that I didn’t yet have), from left to right is SDR SDRAM, DDR-1 DIMM, DDR-2 DIMM, DDR-3 DIMM and DDR-4 DIMM, I doubt I’ll get DDR-5 of any kind because they rarely come across it due to it being so modern

Closer look at the SDR SDRAM, it holds 128MB of data

Closer look at the DDR-3 DIMM, it holds 4GB of data

Hey all!

Matt Taibbi has a new project called Racket Library. https://www.youtube.com/live/1mvVHeIvDVg

He's attempting to write stories and include primary sources as direct attachments. The objective is to preserve newsworthy documents and videos for added context and in light of stealth edits to common news sources. Seems like something worth paying attention to. Maybe he will create an API.
