Hi all, to begin with, I'm NOT in the US, and all hard drives sold where I am have practically no manufacturer warranty, and I'm also a complete noob, my knowledge is tiny, I recently managed to build a NAS out of a repurposed HP EliteDesk 800 G3 with 16GB RAM and 120GB NVME for the OS. It's diskless and I attached a 4TB Western Digital external hard drive to mess around with it, setting up Ubuntu server.

My current library entire size is around 2.2TB, and it won't get THAT much bigger easily I am in the process of buying my drives.

My intention is to buy a first drive, then either add another and setup RAID 1 or add 2 and setup RAID 5.

The reason I am writing this is because of my options. and price points will help me decide which route to take, noting I will be fairly satisfied with 8 - 12 TB of usable space, preferably 12TB though

  1. 12TB Seagate ST12000NM0127 (Unused/Zero hours logged) but not entirely new. No warranty equivalent of 130$
  2. 12TB Seagate ST12000NM0127 used with under 1000 hours logged, 120$// no warranty
  3. Brand new 14TB Exos X14, 1 year "seller" warranty 180$ (kinda out of my budget, while I can afford it, I don't want to do this stretch)
  4. Brand new 8TB Exos, 1 year "seller" warranty 110$.

My NAS has 4 SATA ports, and has trays for two 3,5" hard drives comfortably and can fit 3 if I want to, 4 would need a skill I do not own and while I can, I don't wish to seek help from others, specially that I might not find the needed parts (fitting 4 drives would be a dream but I don't wanna build my plan while I am unlikely to find the parts needed to fit those 4 drives).

So my plan can be either use two 12TB drives (whichever you guys think is best), in RAID1, or use 3 brand new 8TB drives, I'll start with one then add either another and do RAID 1 first then add a third and do RAID 5, or just go ahead and add 2 more at once and do RAID 5 at once.

Lastly, my friend will be in the US around November, I can wait and buy from serverpartsdeals but knowingly I will not benefit from any sort of warranty since I am not in the US, and I'll also need to buy all 2/3 drives at once because I won't be having that opportunity again.

What would you advice me to do?

Thank you, and sorry for writing such a long essay lol

I run retro games from my Samsung T7 2TB external ssd and it’s almost full. I’m interested in getting the 4TB and I’m wondering what is the best/easiest way to transfer the data from the 2TB to the 4TB. I use a Samsung GalaxyBook 2 laptop. I appreciate any help.

Hello folks!

For folks who don't know, the market for tools designed for recording product demos (think Screen Studio) is full of over-prices products. Many of them are completely client based (wrapping ffmpeng), but require subscription services.

I recently stumbled upon https://poindeo.com/edit, which is a great tool and is also completely client based. They're going to make a subscription version of it soon, so I want to archive it so I can use it offline.

I've tried HTTrack (via homebrew), but the site is blank - I surmise this might have to do with the fact that the site is sever side rendered. This is the command I used

httrack https://poindeo.com/edit -O "/Users/myname/websites/testing-httrack-again" -%v -s0 -F "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/138.0.0.0 Safari/537.36"

I'll probably keep digging, but I'm windering what other things you folks would try? Unfortunately, I have a Mac, so the number of website traversal tools I can use is a bit limited.

In case if you don't know what's happening now - apparently Meta implemented some AI (shitty beyond any comprehension) for moderation which is going rogue and banning a whole bunch of people (we are talking about tens of thousands, probably) who did nothing wrong. What's the main accusation do you think? CCE. There are shitloads and shitloads of stories on instagram reddit.

The worst shit is that it's almost impossible to restore account, cause as you all probably know Meta is a garbage company and support is almost non existent there. Even for verified accounts it turned out to be almost useless.

So, dudes, dudesses and in between - I strongly suggest to unlink your facebook and instagram accounts (cause if Meta bans instagram it bans linked Facebook as it turned out).

Use Instagram and Facebook feature to download your information - you can do that in Accounts center. Cause a chance that you can lose all your networking or friends contacts just "because" is a lot more than zero.

If you want to download your media, saved posts, whatever - gallery-dl is the best (and free) choice in my opinion, albeit you have to be a little tech savvy.

Recently I got an external hard drive of one tera, I tried to use it and in addition to the fact that I made some mistakes (such as trying to connect it to the usb2.0 port) once I managed to make it work, I saved the photos, videos and pdf that I had downloaded on my cell phone to free up space, also some usb sticks where I used to save the files of the cell phone, and it didn't work, only some files were Transferred and others just They were not Transferred, I tried one more time and nope, it failed again, so I formatted the external hard drive from ntfs to exfat, and now I was able to transfer the files, I thought my problems were solved but someone told me that exfat is a dangerous format prone to corrupting files and crashing, that ntfs is much safer and I should try to use that format again, What do you recommend?

Tsundoku - a Japanese term for the phenomenon of acquiring books but letting them pile up without reading them. This friend of mine, has 300 games for Mac in his storage... and he doesnt even have a mac!

All the best selling thriller books in both ePub + audio books.

Over 2,000 movies (and in 4K UHD with Dolby Atmos too) plus over 400 TV Series.

+1,000 PC Gamez from MicroProse F1 Grand Prix / Stunts until Forza

Surely ROMs too (SNES, PSP, Vita, PS3, ...)

Windows 1.0, 2, 3, 95, 98..... and surely Linux ISOs too, Solaris, Sun, Novell Netware, BeOS, QNX...

It's kinda sad not being able to consume all of it. I envy the guys that were able to monetize it in legal ways. (ie websites that can run win3.1 in javascript)

I'm glad I'm not like him.. He has 100TB of storage.

Me? just a 8GB flash drive with pics of girls that I'm meeting on Tinder.

I've been connecting an external 5TB HDD (WD) to my 2019 Shield Pro for my Plex library

I've decided to upgrade it to SSD for 2 reasons

Less likely to fail and it might be easier to seek in 50+ GB remux files

I just noticed that it would be cheaper where I live to buy a Samsung 990 Evo plus plus enclosure than buying a Samsung T7 or Crucial X9 pro I was originally planning, I usually leave the HDD connected 24/7 to the Shield and I intend to do the same for the SSD

Any downside to the 990 Evo Plus option I might be overlooking?

I tried using the built-in feature, but it's too much. I've tried logging in from other devices, and it only shows one message. Anything helps.

After my last post, I understood that HDD is the better option for archival storage (like once or twice a year access).

But now that I started researching which kind of HDD is best for this purpose, GPT said that CMR ones are best so I was wondering if any HDD is CMR will it work for my purpose?

So if I can find the cheapest CMR HDD available near me then it would be the best possible drive (for my tight budget) or is there something else I need to consider?

The cheapest HDD that I can find which has CMR is WD23PURZ (WD Purple 2TB), will it be a good option for archival backup?

My use case is back up once and then few reads in a year.

Please help me out, this will clear my mind which HDD I need to purchase

I have three 4TB drives and I need some redundancy for data protection. However while researching the topic I found out many people avoid RAID5 due to very long rebuild time ("your second drive will fail before rebuild finishes").

But the estimate numbers I found online contradict this, sort of, stating that rebuild time for RAID5 usually ranges from 24 to 36 hours. How is that possible that the two drives fail in a single day? Has anyone ever lost data to this scenario or this is just a hypothetical boogieman?

Drives are expensive where I live.

Pinterest is full of amazing content, design inspiration, DIY ideas, recipes, and mood boards, but it’s surprisingly annoying when trying to save videos or specific images. There’s no download button for most pins, especially videos or idea pins.

A super handy tool for this is Pinsaver.io. It’s a free website that lets you download:

  • Videos (including idea pins and motion pins)
  • High-resolution images
  • GIFs and animated pins
  • Reels

No need to create an account or install anything. Just copy the Pinterest pin link, paste it on the site, and hit download. It works on both desktop and mobile browsers, and supports most public content types from Pinterest.

Useful for building offline reference folders, sharing pins outside of Pinterest, or saving ideas to use in other apps. It also preserves the original quality, so no blurry downloads like with screenshots.

There are probably other tools floating around, too, but this one’s clean and works reliably.

As a data hoarder, I’m considering colocation for my growing collection of hard drives to ensure reliable power and connectivity without turning my home into a server room. I found a guide on Colocation Hosting Cost from ServerMania, which says pricing starts at $79/month for a single server and goes up to $599/month for a full 42U rack, depending on rack units, power, and bandwidth. For my 4U storage server, this seems like a solid option to get climate control and 24/7 security without the hassle of managing power or cooling at home. The guide also mentions remote hands fees for physical maintenance, which could add up. Has anyone here colocated their storage servers? How do you find the colocation hosting cost compared to running servers at home, and any tips for keeping expenses low while maximizing uptime?

Like many of you, I’ve wrestled with ways to download Patreon videos and audio for offline use—stuff like tutorials or podcasts for commutes (e.g., this post https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/xhjmw3/how_to_download_patreon_videos). Tools like yt-dlp (https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp) are awesome but a pain for non-coders due to command-line setup. So, I built Patreon Media Downloader, a Chrome extension for downloading your subscribed Patreon content with a single click.

It’s super straightforward: install it, open a Patreon post that you are subscribed to, and click to save media. No terminal, no config files. It hooks into Patreon’s website and handles media you’re subscribed to. For those interested, you can check it out on the Chrome Web Store (https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/bmfmjdlgobnhohmdffihjneaakojlomh).

As a solo dev, I built this to simplify hoarding Patreon content for myself and others, especially for non-techy folks who want an easy solution. I’d love your feedback—bugs, feature ideas, or any thoughts are welcome!
