Talk about whatever, respecting the rules established by Lemmygrad. Failing to comply with the rules will grant you a few warnings, insisting on breaking them will grant you a beautiful shiny banwall.

A community for comrades to chat and talk about whatever doesn't fit other communities

Was looking into the procedure of vasectomies (which are freely available in my country) and I always see some line like this in Wikipedia for most interesting medical procedures or other important services.

The U.S. Affordable Care Act (signed into law in 2010) does not cover vasectomies, although eight states require state-health insurance plans to cover the cost.

Why the heck are Unitedstadians even patriotic at all if they live on the basis of "this basic thing is only ensured on a state-by-state basis".

  • Everything's so smaller now
  • All avatars are a tiny square (but uses their original, circular shape if you go to the page where you can view the avatar fully)
  • "OP" flair like Reddit (also looks like reddit), as opposed to "Creator" flair which felt more original
  • The post links and fediverse icons are now next to the username as opposed to the upvote-downvote-share icon
  • The vaporwave theme makes the "subscribe", "create a post" buttons more rounded... they look just like Reddit's "subscribe", "create a post" buttons!

I like the vaporwave-dark theme personally

it was fucking funny and terrifying, basically they were publishing articles on wsj and the likes about that they needed to destroy the human race and westerns were like of course we need to do that what other alternative do we have

Say I view a lemmy post or mastodon toot on a different site, getting there from a link shared via any other medium: how do I view it through my home instance?

For example if I view a lemmy.ml thread on lemmy.ml, I can read it but can't a comment or vote as I'm not 'logged in.' Presumably the solution is to convert the URL to a lemmygrad one, but I'm not sure how to go about it. The URL usually has just a post ID, which presumably is unique only to that instance, and not something my home instance would necessarily recognise.

Anytime online video game cheating is brought up, Chinese people are blamed and this thread supposedly is sourced a lot. Just wondering if this is all true or there are other factors like higher population/just don't notice non-chinese names?

(In this instance, legally safe ones)

I went to a lecture today entitled

Relationship between the PRC Constitution, the Hong Kong Basic Law, “One Country, Two Systems” and the Hong Kong National Security Law

and I wanted to share the slides, 'cos it was a good talk for anyone interested in how the National Security Law actually works, and it also introduces the basics of how the Central Government and Hong Kong regional government function (the lecture was for English speaking teachers in Hong Kong, so a lot of them were clueless). And a lot of useful facts to debunk accusations that HK's autonomy is fake.

The files are in pdf format.

Also the speaker was Miriam Lau, who used to be a member of the National People's Congress. First time I got to meet someone from China's highest organ of state power (but she's not communist though; she's a Beijing loyalist conservative).

edit: post is here

I finally decided to delete twitter and moved on to Mastodon. Now I have no idea who to follow, so if you have anyone to recommend then I'm all ears, communist or not, just somebody who is interesting will do. I tried to explore a bit but it's mostly just random people so I gave up on that.

The shit that gets spread about him might be the most cartoonishly evil sounding things like being responsible for every famine in every Socialist country and thinking genes weren't real. Anyone have any good sources about the man and his work?

I was unsure where to cross-post this. But maybe we should discuss this to make sure Lemmygrad users are staying safe? Similar to the unspoken rule that we strongly discourage people using their real names or giving away too many personal details.

Edit: obligatory explanation (thanks mods for squaring me away)...

What you see via the UI isn't "all that exists". Unlike Reddit, where everything is a black box, there are a lot more eyeballs who can see "under the hood". Any instance admin, proper or rogue, gets a ton of information that users won't normally see. The attached example demonstrates that while users will only see upvote/downvote tallies, admins can see who actually performed those actions.

Edit: To clarify, not just YOUR instance admin gets this info. This is ANY instance admin across the Fediverse.

And I thought I was making some progress telling her about the innovation under socialism, definitions of economic systems, and so on. She’s a doomer anarcho-pacifist btw. She has been wasting hours of my life recent by constantly texting and not really listening to me.

We do have one but it doesn't have as much attention even from people on this instance, I included. I understand the idea of using Lemmy.ml community is to spread the world and show reactionaries that there's a world beyond their tiny window which is not only encompassed by the West. But at the same time is tiring, I like reading the news, that's how I like to start my morning, but I don't want to get every day into the same fights because I'm just voicing my opinion, and having to argue against the same arguments over and over again: "China/X country which is bad source so the source is lying", "capitalist apologia", "whataboutism", etc. I'm just not liking it, I love the fact that Lemmy is growing, but it has become a reactionary cesspool. I just would like it very much more if I could just go read the news and either get a true insight or joke with my comrades, and if I feel like it, I go to Lemmy.ml to argue with reactionaries.

Does anyone feel like me? Maybe we could get a bot that cross posts from there to here so that we can get the news without the trash and have it be more active?

So apparently the mods at bonehurtingjuice decided to protest by becoming a commie sub, but actual commies are now posting and commenting, pushing out all the normal content.

The reaction is hilarious, if you have time and want to engage with reactionaries, come check out and support our comrades on that sub. Assuming you still have reddit.

Throughout my school years, I never really learned about the atrocities committed by Canada against natives, nor about their consequences. Our classes did not discuss capitalism and communism, or how society actually functions. It also failed my generation to develop skills that are useful. There is a lack of basic skills among the younger generations, including writing, reading comprehension, and even cooking.

Many young adults can't cook, so they rely on fast food and services such as “skip the dishes”.

My region of Canada speaks french, and most young people cannot even write a sentence without making several mistakes, including me. (I don't live in Quebec!!!)

A lot of people these days don't read books because they don't understand what they're reading or don't have an interest in a particular topic. Books about the social sciences for example, not shitty books like Harry Potter. Unfortunately, many won't be reading "theory" anytime soon.

It’s evident that the capitalist education system failed us.

A survey showed that the youth in America want to be streamers/youtubers when they are older, while Chinese kids want to be astronauts. The kids in China won’t be astronauts but at least they have an interest in science. Wtf are the American kids going to do when they realize their dream of becoming a streamer or famous is almost impossible.

The desire to be successful is still present in the younger generations; however, due to the failings of the education system, their dreams are drastically different from those of China. There are certainly other factors that have contributed, but I think our education failed to ignite a passion.

It's likely that the educational system didn't provide the students with any kind of meaningful experience, leading them to find fulfillment in video games instead. Because games are all they know and are their only interest, they want to become streamers.

This is a serious matter…We are raising a generation of gamers!

Aside from that, China did something to prevent young people from becoming addicted to video games. When I was 16, I became addicted to the mmorpg world of warcraft. My country should have taken action because I needed a lot of help, and my parents didn't do anything, even in the beginning they paid for my subscription.

My education did not allow me to find my true interests, such as writing, that I later discovered on my own. Creative writing classes probably would have prevented me from becoming addicted to mmorpgs.

It bothers me that people think we should be afraid of the government using its authority to accomplish something that will be beneficial in the long run. Preventing the youth from becoming addicted to the online world, for example.

We will need to re-educate our young generations, not really by force, but by doing whatever is humanly possible with our power to give them a better education. I also think our youth should keep going to school until they're at least 20 so they're prepared for the realities of life. There are so many things we can learn and skills we can develop. Our current system is failing our future generations.

Some leftist over here consider our party to not be fully marxist/leftist whatever.

Now, would I say our party (PVDA/PTB) is perfect? No. Would I say it is the furthest an actual marxist party would go in my country? Yes. Is it therefore the best party I could join and become active in? Probably.

I participate in a lot of discussion within the party. I'm openly ML. I have my own views and the official party line doesn't always support it. Nonetheless it is the party I see the most potential in to make actual change.

It made me think. What would you consider the bottom line for joining a party?

Side note: going to sleep now, will read replies next morning.

There are a lot of things in life that I love, but those things will always inevitably come into conflict with organizing somehow. So far, the only ways I’ve been able to resolve this have basically come down to bullying myself for caring about anything except socialism, or ignoring the problem. Both seem toxic. How do you deal with it?
