I gotta know. It just looks so forced. In the most recent video I saw homie was "buying his first computer" and he was a "compsci professor" in cuba but never owned a computer/laptop.

So, I started blocking accounts that don't engage with the stuff I post and just make personal attacks. After blocking these handful of accounts all the harassment stopped entirely. Vast majority of people on the lemmyverse are across different instances aren't attacking other people. There are just a handful of really active trolls out there, and I think the best policy might be to just start blocking them when we see them.

I made an account on lemmy.ml today, and I was planning to simply use this account as a general-purpose account to browse all contents in the fediverse. But, considering the small size of the communities in lemmygrad.ml compared to other mainstream communities in lemmy.ml and lemmy.world, I can't really see any lemmygrad.ml contents on my feed unless I manually go into the individual communities here.

So my question is, is there a way to filter my feed on command to only see lemmygrad.ml posts from my lemmy.ml account? Or would it be viable to make a separate lemmygrad.ml account and alternate between accounts? How are you guys approaching this?

Inspired to ask this after last night's umpteenth riots at a Dutch football match against Swedish Hammarby. It seems as if ever since covid happened, there's multiple riots at football matches every week.

It also openly shows how an increasing amount of Dutch people have lost all their sense, thinking they can do whatever they want. Last week, a video of a Dutch tourist went viral after he was seen shitting on another sleeping tourist's head in Mallorca. He blamed it on alcohol. Last night, several Hammarby fans were hospitalized after getting beat down by FC Twente fans. They justified it by saying they were 'sitting in the home section' (???). Last year several Dutch clubs have come into trouble after riots erupted at their matches, both national and international. Violence in nightlife seems to have increased.

Overall, Dutch society has become more shit. What about yours?

Quoting Carroll P. Kakel’s The Holocaust as Colonial Genocide, pages 29–30:

In the same lands once conquered by the Teutonic Knights, a similar imperial‐colonial project reappeared in the eighteenth century, under the auspices of Frederick II (‘the Great’), King of Prussia (1740–86).^14^ Immediately after ascending to the throne, the new King of Prussia began a series of conquests and annexations in ‘the East’, seizing the province of Silesia from Austria and fighting during the Seven Years’ War (1756–1763) to retain it.

Following the 1772 partition of Poland (between Austria, Prussia, and Russia), Frederick II gained new lands in East Prussia and Polish (or West) Prussia, recovering territory that had been conquered, settled and lost by the Teutonic Knights. Inspired by the American example, Frederick compared the inhabitants of Polish territories acquired between 1772 and 1795 — the ‘slovenly Polish trash’, he called them — to Iroquois American Indians [read: Haudenosaunee] and named three of his settlements in the acquired territories Florida, Philadelphia and Saratoga.^15^

Drawn to the tasks of agricultural improvement and internal colonization, Frederick carried out great reclamation and colonization projects, seeking to ‘plant’ colonists on reclaimed land in ‘the East’, land located in the marshlands of the north German plain. Under his auspices, recruitment stations advertised Prussia as a ‘promised land’ for hardworking immigrants. As part of what has been called Peuplierungspolitik (population policy), peasant settlers and craftsman were solicited from Germany, as well as from German‐speaking Europe.

Frederick’s agents recruited German farmers with the promise of free land, and Frederick himself looked to replace ‘Polish’ nobles with ‘Prussian’ ones. He also sought to gradually ‘get rid’ of all the Poles, and aimed to expel the 25,000 Jews living in West Prussia at the time.^16^ In West Prussia, he established 1,500 colonist villages and hamlets, populated by 100,000 settlers from his own kingdom and 250,000 immigrants from other parts of Germany.^17^

(Emphasis added.)

I am mildly angry, because I was aware of this character ever since I played Sid Meier’s Civilization IV (which was in…2008, maybe?) and somehow I had no clue about any of this.

I cant stand living in this fake-wannabe democracy. I feel so lonely, nobody shares my views and everytime i try to educate them they mock and ridicule me to oblivion. Western europe truly is a hopeless pile of garbage. Thanks to the social democracies (nice move bourgeois pigs) people dont see the need to overthrow the capitalists when they are already fed the absolute bare minimum (free eduction and healthcare) by them while still being significantly poorer than the capitalists who are still fucking up our economy and politics. People are so liberal here, its like someone made a concentrate of Liberalism and spoon fed it to every-single person from man, woman to baby. *uh but freedome but muh democricuh * i cant hear it anymore. Its not enough that my family is constantly argueing about the shit in ukraine while im just sitting there having to listen 24/7 to "The russians were always authoritarian burglars, thats just their nature" and "Russia needs to be bombed its the only solution". Oh pls just somebody, China perhaps come and liberate the people from the western hegemony. The west needs to fall and when it does while watch with joy.

ps. Sorry for the outburst here but i really needed to get that out of me

This is a question I've been thinking about for quite a few. I'm currently studying Computer Science, and personally I choose this major because it aligned with my talents and interests, however after 2 years of college its very apparent that I don't relate to or even like the majority of my peers in this field, in fact most of my friends study Biology or something.

The problem is with this annoying rat racey mentality and obsession with money. Everyone wants to work in California, almost everyone is in the field to maximize their earning potential. And ideas like the "only purpose of college is to land a job," "less time to eat = more time to work" (many of my peers eat 1-2 meals a day), and behaviors like sucking up to people with better connections/coops or remodeling your entire personality towards company values, or doxing your interviewer in advance to pretend to have common interests to increase their chances of landing a job offer are not only prevalent but seen as normal.

Problem is, I don't want to live in California, that place's cultural runs completely against my beliefs. I don't want to sacrifice all my time and life/hobbies/friends for work. And I want to make friends with normal, chill people, and not a bunch of insecure pretentious assholes, which I now fear every high paying tech area in the US will be chock full of.

I'm curious if there are places in the global south where I can pursue a fulfilling career in my field. Income is not an issue, at this point I care about quality of life significantly more. I've been eyeing Shenzhen for a while, although China's 996 culture also seems to be a little worrying and Shenzhen's cost of living is quite high as well. I wanted to get some input on this issue from individuals who have a more open mind about non-western countries.

This is my first post in Lemmygrad btw, sorry if it's in the wrong place.

Edit: Thanks for all the responses everyone! I really appreciate the advice and just general reassurance, especially at the existence of non-liberal subcultures even in the bay area. I'll keep in mind that the world is bigger than just 1 university campus, and I'll be open to exploring new opportunities and finding my own niche.

You may have noticed that I don't post pictures. If not, now you know.

One of the reasons is that I'm worried about sharing meta data.

Does anyone know:

  1. Does the Lemmy software strip / hide meta data from photos when they're uploaded?
  2. Is there a way of stripping meta data from photos?
  3. Does downloading an image from the internet and uploading it from my hard drive add any meta data?
  4. If I create a digital image, does it have meta data that could reveal my location, etc? (And then questions 1 and 2 for this option.)
  5. How should/could I keep my data/location safe if I choose to post either my photos, my scans, or pictures (either created by me or downloaded from the internet)?

Hello Comrades,

Where do you think is the best place to post educational/theory posts?

I've been writing some longer posts lately and posting them too !genzhou@lemmygrad.ml because the sidebar calls it, 'GenZedong’s educational hub'. Shall I keep doing that or is there a better community? e.g.:

I was going to use !communism@lemmygrad.ml but as I'm linking to my posts in the wider Lemmyverse, I didn't want libs coming over to an explicitly Marxists-only community.

One of the reasons for these longer posts is to provide an opportunity for us to talk about some issues and to answer questions that others ask in the wider Lemmyverse without (a) coming off as hostile/confrontational or (b) wasting hours writing things that people might not read or appreciate.

(No obligation for us to talk through my posts! But at least there's always a possibility of a constructive and critical discussion, which doesn't exist elsewhere.)

Edit: These aren't necessarily 101 questions, either, but I suppose they could go in !communism101@lemmygrad.ml, depending on what you all think.

Im not going to pull punches on this rant. I am so exhausted by this rhetoric and unfortunately it is pervasive in my personal life and online. I spend most of my productive time reviewing literature on various global issues. Namely land grab discourse, genocide studies, conservation efforts, state development policy, IFI reports etc etc.

Let me tell you something about the lives of rural and Indigenous people in the global south. They get their homes burned down and murdered in their sleep. Their lands are stolen from them with techniques perfected by colonial powers, especially from US settler colonialism.

The state will steal their lands and "preserve it" for use of private capital, for white settlers, or to create a national park or preserves that wealthy foriegners can hunt game and so they can parade to the world how "modern" they are becoming.

If they cannot steal land outright they will use other more complicated manners to incentivise rural people to be tied into market relations, such as dependence on ecotourism or even biochar and other technologies presented as liberatory or as needed due to damages colonialism has done. "A bit of colonialism will help your colonialism problem," if you will.

These relations will contradict and then corrode their lifeways and distracted from effective traditional methods because white tourists don't want to see the cattle of pastoralists when on vacation. They are also shamed by the excess wealth of tourists, and the settlers that facilitate tourism, encouraging them to become more enfranchised into modernity so their lands will either become vulnerable to direct theft or the market relations will mold them into what settlers want them to do for the benifit of their estates.

These extreme minority settlers often own like half of an entire county, while the county next door is over half conservation area. This means fewer lands for grazing and fewer water sources available for rural people. It leads to starvation and death, especially during dry periods such as the current drought in east Africa, all while the state concern trolls about food security and executes the development dance to attract aid and FDI. It also means that lands are degraded by over use because these people are being choked out of their ancestral lands. The state and white settlers then blame the pastoralists and forest dwellers and weaponize Human Rights against them, saying the rural peoples are preventing the states quest for water security as they redirect all waters to metro areas and settler estates.

All of this is the genocidal process of primative accumulation or accumulation by dispossession. It is a privilege I am able to research these situations. It is a privilege that I am able to work with organizations that work with local Tribes on the issues they are concerned about. It is a privilege I am a grad student that is paid to do this, although our union has to fight the university for a fraction of a living wage.

I am not privileged to not vote Blue. It is more like a curse of understanding. Who do you think backs these violent efforts of dispossession? USAID is never far away. The EU is never far away. The IFI are always right there. Conservation as we know it was created in North America to conquer the continent and take the land from Indigenous peoples and it has exported these methods abroad. All of this is supported by institutions and policies that democrats and republicans alike believe in and enable globally. It is supported by finance capital which is the foundation of the present democratic party

Let me tell you what people who vote blue do about this. Kenya or some other post colonial state will massacre people and burn down their homes and create a national park. Netflix will then hire Obama to narrate a docuseriese on the glorious national parks of the world. Blue voters will then consume the erasure and genocide of rural people as feel-good, green(TM) content with satisfaction that the world is becoming a better place. That's it. Then they go vote blue.

Anyone who says I am privileged to not vote blue has no clue or no care regarding how the world works and is a combination being hopelessly US centric, too focused on bourgeoisie partisanship and embarrassingly naive about the world. Voting blue is the opposite of solidarity. The people who say they are not privileged enough to not vote Blue fail to see their own privilege of living in the Disney land of the global north. What ever gains they think Democrats will give them will either never happen or will be cut from the flesh of people they are happy to sacrifice.

I will not be extorted by bourgeoisie partisans. My moral worth and political identify is mine to create, not theirs to demand. My concern is with the fundamental machinations of capital and the devestating impact it has on people while it reproduces itself, and it is most destructive in places far from the minds of democrats regardless of issues in the US. I'm not going to be tricked into supporting a party that enables the process of accumulation by dispossession, and that stands on a foundation of genocide. They only have moral arguments but they do not have moral standing.

Hi comrades,

As the title suggests, how do you manage your time spent online? I personally don't use any social media aside from Lemmygrad, but I'm still struggling with being online too much, even if it's lurking here or on other websites. I try to focus on offline things, such as books mostly that I download. My biggest problem is the refresh feature, even smaller sites such as this one just become an issue because of refreshing for new posts or discussions.

As a Linux user, I can say I tried to make my desktop as offline-focused as possible. I don't use any "cloud" services etc., though I still find myself dealing with this. Perhaps it's the interface.

I do like the Small Web movement, especially protocols like Gemini or Gopher. From what I see, they're filled to the brim with conservatives and anarchists, sadly. I do lurk on YouTube via Invidious, which is probably the biggest time-waste, though there's much valuable niche content on there. Sometimes at least.

Speaking of this, I sometimes take breaks from politics to not get overwhelmed. To get updates, I usually use RSS and the Hexbear News Megathread. For the most part, it's enough. Though FOMO (fear of missing out) hits here too, as what if I'm not up to date with something important globally.

What's your experience with this, comrades?

For me, though pretty basic, it would be Harry Styles - Daylight

Though it probably is because, and I have no shame in saying this, I have a crush on Harry Styles

I didn’t see much info about it prior to watching, went with some friends. A large part of the movie is about his possible communist affiliations, and his defaming. It wasn’t insanely anti-communist, but it definitely operated under the assumption communism equals bad. Anyone else have some thoughts on it?

I've probably tripped around 20 times throughout my life. I did it mostly because I bought into the idea that psychedelics would improve my life and habits in some way. I don't believe that anymore, and I don't think psychs really changed my life at all except it gave me lots of cool memories. I kind of feel some level of nostalgia for that reality-bending feeling of being on psychs, even though the last time I took it was only a couple months ago. It's just so different from everyday experience.
