I'm an artist/music producer and I'm wary of the whole security state so I have a hard time reconciling the contradiction of needing to make money under capitalism and also my political views, cause making money doing what I'm doing requires some degree of visibility. Are there any extra steps I should take to ensure that I'm not "too visible" so to speak? I don't think it's avoidable at all and the solution is probably to somewhat hide my power level.

It was always a bit stressful seeing my favourite communities on reddit being brigaded by libs because there was always the threat of the whole sub getting banned due to "toxicity". Now they're on our property.

i'm not really fluent so i just lurk and translate anything i don't know. most of the time i'll just browse zhihu or baidu and find new terms. sometimes i'll find stuff that i wouldn't on english sites. it's also become my go to "immersion" study method.

And of course they use it on a three-year-old post by one of the Lemmygrad admins. The post itself is a based picture: https://lemmygrad.ml/post/8886

I have noticed that I switch night and day cycles during summer because it's too hot to function in the day.

The earth is getting hotter each year due to capitalism. With how capitalism works, capitalists aren't going to slow down or give a second thought for nature. At a certain level AC won't be enough and workers will end up collapsing or dying... Which lowers production, so I think that maybe in like 5 or 10 years (if not now already) we'll see some push for night shifts because it's colder in the night, burning the earth without affecting productivity. Will also limit chilling to lit up private properties that require payment or full of consumables like a Walmart because it's safer than idk sitting in a public park at 3 am. This will probably get spun around as a revolutionary good thing or something.

It's selfish I know, but just seeing all people from the North complaining about how horribly hot it is right now makes me quite scared of how things will be looking down south later in the year. I'm enjoying my ~15º C right now but it can get stupidly hot where I live in the summer and I'm really not looking forward to seeing shopping mall Santa Clauses melting into puddles come Christmas.

There's very little official talk of preparing for the summer here and I bet most people will just become surprised airfried pikachu if we also get our heat records.

The whole article is quite funny, especially the lists of most used tankie words, or the branding of foreignpolicy as a left-wing news source.

It's a liberal cesspool full of people who refuse to listen when you speak. I explained how the SMO in Russia was justified going all the way back to fucking WWII and Stepan Bandera to Russia not wanting Ukraine in NATO and some dickhead told me to "tOuCH gRaSS". Didn't even address any of my points, just that "dEnAziFIcaTioN iSnT a gOoD rEasOn, iT's aS bAd aS wMDs".

Fucking moron. I hate that fucking place so fucking much.

https://lemmygrad.ml/c/worldbuilding

There's been a ton of talk on Lemmygrad (and in this community in particular) in the recent months about having better spaces for socialist/communist fiction writers, and after holding off for a long time I decided to finally make a worldbuilding community on here! It's something I really love doing and I'm a socialist, so I hope I can help make it a nice place for socialist worldbuilders and writers in general. Doesn't have to be explicitly socialist or leftist worlds, it's more a community for socialists as opposed to specifically socialist writing.

I will be transferring my existing lore posts from Reddit onto there in a bit, after I edit them as most of them are from years ago and my worlds have changed. I'd love to see what all my comrades have created as well!

Funny, this is actually why I created an account on Lemmygrad in the first place. You probably know me by my Lemmy.ml account since that's what I normally use to participate on here, but I feel that if I'm to moderate a community it should be done from an in-instance account. That and in case Lemmygrad decides to defederate with Lemmy.ml.

I started listening to the Parenti Collection (thanks to the comrade who compiled this) for the first time today, starting from the top "Images of Imperialism", and I am hooked.

This I'm sure some of you know already, but Parenti is passionate, knowledgeable, and humorous. I couldn't put it down today, and listened to 3 of his talks at work.

E23 - This was all something I was aware of at the edges of my understanding, but the depth and breath of his knowledge and the sheer volume of examples of Western imperialism he presented opened my eyes even more. Very powerful to the point of instilling in me even just a fraction of his frustration.

E22 - Another eye opening talk. One of those stories that leaves you wondering "what else have I never investigated like this". We all know the story of Caesar, but I realize I've never once asked or wondered why he was assassinated.

E21 - What a wonderfully human story. Such a contrast to the previous two, with Parenti's humor and wit on full display. I can see why he is so believed. "I do this for those people, the ones who are just to tired from work to have sex" not only an extremely humorous story, but also something I think is easy to lose sight of. This leftist movement is as much for our over worked and underpaid gender queer barristas as it is for our deer hunting trade union construction worker. He mentioned the book "The Hidden Injuries of Class" and I feel like I should put it on my to-read list.

Anyway, if you didn't know this archive existed, now you do!

I can fully understand when me or someone else gets downvotes for saying something controversial or silly (yeah, it happens, I admit), but why would anyone come here and spend time downvoting things that perfectly align with the political climate here?

Are we that popular that we are being displayed in other instances so often? Do we have lurkers who only pretend to be communists? And in that case - Jesus, I thought that I am wasting my time sometimes... 😆

The fact that the first thing I received was a downvote is a comedy gold.

I decided to quit coffee about a month ago because even though it is not that harmful to my health I realised I only consumed it because of addiction rather than it making my life any better. Considering I abstain from all other social drugs anyway, and it was also the last big source of sugar in my life, that was also convenient.

The constant headache went by in a week or so, but these last two days have been the first time since that I haven't had sudden urges to nap in the afternoon. I never expected quitting coffee to be so disruptive for such a mild drug, so I can't even imagine how much worse it would be with alcohol, opioids or crack or doing it while particularly busy. It also helped me get my sleep in order, which I dumbly didn't even think about beforehand. Heartly recommend trying it out (in your time off!).

So, um, I have this perfectly good, half-written fanfiction sort of just sitting around among my documents. Basically, it's set in 2040, and after Hatsune Miku escaped into the real world with virtual Rick Astley (long story), Rick died, and she became sad. This quote explains it pretty well:

Anyways, this kid, Richard Ashley, is Rick's reincarnation, and he has to win a singing competition to buy cancer medicine for his parents, so he's pretty desperate to get Miku to teach him. Any thoughts?

I don't know how but somehow it feels like lemmy is even more full of arrogant, moronic libs than reddit. Such a bloodthirsty, warmongering pack of Western chauvinists. I can't even stand being anywhere but lemmygrad now. I seriously fucking hate these people.

For most people, "socialism" is an unclear or even scary word. This hinders the willingness to engage with its ideas or even consider it a viable alternative to whatever we are running on now.

So, (Sunday hot take!): why not stop using the word when advocating for "socialist ideas" or the "abandonment of capitalism" etc.?

My suggestion for a new term is Capitalism 2.0; because consider the following thought process:

feudalism –› capitalism –› socialism = nooo, they gonna steal my toothbrush😭

feudalism –› capitalism –› capitalism 2.0. = omg, finally things will get better! 🥳

That framing could alleviate negative associations and misconceptions and as a result make all kinds of people more open to exploring and questioning the principles and structures that are hindering global progress.

Lately, I've been wondering why I rarely come across any posts from this instance. When I was on lemmy.ml, I used to complain about the overwhelming number of posts from the Shit Reactionaries Say community. At that time, my main concern was seeing fewer of those posts. However, to my surprise, I now find myself missing them. Despite consciously searching for an instance that doesn't defferederate, I still can't find any posts. It's not just the Shit Reactionaries Say community—I never see any posts from the entire instance. I'm curious to know if the reason behind this is that the instance has diminished in size. Could it be that the instance's user base has significantly decreased, leading to the lack of visible posts?

Learning implies change. To live implies change. Change is the only constant. Therefore, instead of fighting it, we should embrace it.

What experiences have you had with change?

I'll start:

As I've become more politically aware, I've become less and less willing to do hard work. I now do only what is asked of me, and no more. It started as a response to the inherent exploitation we are forced to participate, but it creeped into my own personal life. I have become "lazy", as I've become less and less engaged in my own personal projects. And while I tend to antagonize this part of myself, I've recently learned to be compassionate. I'm now slowly realizing how much I overworked myself, and how toxic my relationship to work was. I'm slowly enjoying life a bit more every day, and even though I feel like I'm going "slower", I no longer think that's necessarily a bad thing. It's ok to smell the roses sometimes.

There is still a sour feeling in me of how much more I would be willing to do if the result of such work benefited society directly. But I can't just will a different economic system into existence, so I need to learn to let go. We need to pick and choose our battles.

I can't communicate words right so here's what I'm trying to say, I have interacted with people from the global north who identify with ideologies such as anti-colonialism, feminism, socialism, veganism etc... And I've noticed a minority of purist/close to being reactionaries always being loud (not literal loud) who don't represent them well and mainly exist online.

You've prolly already seen the "feminist (TERFs etc), socialist, vegan" ones. the anti-colonial thing I've seen in like Afrocentrists spreading hate to light skin native African groups (especially North Africans) which misses the point of who's the evil white man.

This has obviously spread and I've seen this in global southeners influenced by western media or something else.

It neither worries me nor make sleep less at night, but it bothers me whenever I'm trying to vibe online, is there an explanation or a cause for that happens? Is it due to competing in who's gooder? Is it because of propaganda? Are these people a psyop made to depopularise a movement? Is it because of liberalism? Is it because of the lack of theory or historical and political knowledge?

There is a tendency currently within corporate structures to focus on metaphysical conceptions, such as “energy” and “magic”.

It is my belief that this integration is a result of the cooption of the metaphysical by the corporations in light of the collapse of centrally organized religions.

With the loss/decline of community minded religion, a void was left within the wider population which reasserted its existence, further atomizing those already disaffected and alienated from themselves and their community by the perversity of the private property and capitalist models. Marx once said that religion is the opiate of the masses, this is often misunderstood as his stating that religion is an addictive drug, but in fact, opium at the time was a lifesaving medical wonder, and as such, religion is the opiate of the masses, to my reading, refers to the use of religion to stave off the pain caused by the alienation of the proletariat by the capitalist order.

Thus, it is my belief that the modern corporate structure with its focus on the metaphysical and attempt to integrate “community” into the inherently anti-communal structure that is the privately owned corporation, is a way of an attempt to repurposeing the necessity for an opiate in a way that enforces and entrenches the capitalist order. Through the creation and maintenance of hierarchically organized false community, they are able to shape the overall narrative surrounding themselves, and are able to drive the development and progression of community values society-wide in a way that furthers their interests and negates the best interests of the proletariat working class.

This development is a natural response for owners, executives, and investors as the proletariat reawakens to the inherently exploitative nature of private property relations and wage labor, and the long slumbering labor movement begins to reawaken. By enshrining the profit motive into the conception of community, and ensuring that workers are kept in a constant state of precarious balance(see: The Precariat), without time to personally develop an understanding of community as it exists naturally without corporate direction, the dominant narrative within a society can be driven to where even the remaining familial and communal bonds can become corrupted by capitalist rhetoric.

It is my belief that this instilling of self-exploitation into individuals has contributed to and allowed for the rise of inherently anti-communal concepts such as “hustle culture”, the monetization of hobbies, etc.

By tying impossible metaphysical conceptions such as “magic” and “energy” into corporate structures, corporations are able to essentially become proselytizing pastors preaching a fiery rhetoric of infinite growth in the face of hard environmental limits, while minimizing the inherent cognitive dissonance one feels in the knowledge that one’s own actions contribute directly to the compounding crises of the current era. when confronted with obvious logical fallacies by building “faith” within the working class.

This faith allows enough space for the corporate owners to push growth in ways that inherently damage the environment and working class, because when one relies upon faith, we are unable to logically examine things, and readily visible trends(such as that towards increasingly authoritarian hierarchies society-wide) become masked behind “the bigger picture”. It also serves to minimize dissent among the employees at a corporation, as those who come to believe in the faith-based ideology espoused by the corporation will react negatively to having their faith bubble popped, and can lash out in order to protect their identity, which, through ideological capture has become tied to their employer. Through time, this system will self-reinforce, as the corporation encourages blind faith, and punishes critical examination of the corporations claims, eventually, the corporation will be primarily those who have fully accepted the ideological basis which was forced upon them from above, and those individuals, having as said before, tied their identity to their corporation, will work in tandem with the corporation against their fellow workers in order to minimize cognitive dissonance and maintain their delusions of community.

One can hardly fault the individuals who fall for this rhetoric, as individuals themselves have limited resources and time to educate themselves on the underlying ideologies of the owner class within the society, while corporations and government, with their monopoly on the media, and levers of power, have nearly unlimited resources through which to push their ideology upon the people.

Through the position imposed upon the proletariat, termed by some the Precariat, in which one is precariously balanced above a pit of suffering, we are forced into a constant state of fight or flight, of survival. When one is in such a state, science has shown, pro-social behaviors such as empathy become more difficult to perform, as one is risking possible harm to themselves by going against the popular grain. By keeping people in this state of fear, they can spread their ideology nearly unchecked. The poor man looks down on the homeless man not because he hates him, but because he knows that he is only a run of bad luck away from becoming one himself, and the cognitive dissonance of being in such a position is so pernicious that people will reject the evidence of their eyes and ears in order to minimize their own suffering, even if that is directly at the expense of others.

So, for example, the Tiananmen square thing. Every once in a while, you see stormfront people go crazy on it, saying shit like "fuck the CCP, can't censor me". I had been a reddit user for a long time before I moved on to here so I used to see those "awareness" posts all the time, though I didn't pay any attention to it much. But now that I've been on lemmygrad for a while, it seems to me that things didn't happen like stormfront made it out to be? The guy in the picture didn't get harmed? There was no massacre? I'm not knowledgeable about any of this, so if anyone have reputable sources, please point me to it. I'm really curious how you get millions of people to believe in something that didn't happen at all.
