When Nicolas Winding Refn, the director of cult violent films Pusher and Drive, was announced as one of the creators of the BBC’s new version of The Famous Five, it left members of the Enid Blyton Society spluttering into their ginger beer.

Yes, the Danish film-maker is “reimagining” the adventures of Julian, Dick, Anne, George and Timmy the dog for a “progressive new audience”. True, he’s a Cannes award-winning auteur with a reputation for onscreen hyperviolence. Granted, he once declared “I’m a pornographer” in an interview for his Ryan Gosling vehicle Only God Forgives. But fans can rest assured that they’re set for something magical this Christmas.

...

Blyton’s 21 original books are used as the basis for the three new episodes – with elements added from myth and history. The Christmas special, The Curse of Kirrin Island, features a story based around the Knights Templar, lost treasure and an inscribed goblet. But there is also lots of humour, provided particularly by henchman Boswell and a nod to the Famous Five’s obsession with ginger beer. No word yet on whether lashings of it will be available as Famous Five merchandise.

...

But the three 90-minute specials also contain menace and mystery

...

The Famous Five: The Curse of Kirrin Island is on CBBC and iPlayer on 9 December and on BBC One on New Year’s Eve.

In the first of this four-part BBC series, David Attenborough shows us how ancient creatures have come to be preserved as fossils and how those fossils can shed light on characteristics of these creatures' lives, and even their death. He further demonstrates how scientists use a variety of ingenious methods to extract once living creatures and plants from their rocky tombs.

Cuts to the BBC’s flagship evening news programme Newsnight have been described as “a bad decision” that reveals a “loss of confidence” at the corporation.

Newsnight staff past and present have reacted with dismay and anger at the axing of half of the programme’s staff by BBC, which will see the programme cut to 30 minutes and its headcount slashed from 57 to 23.

Emily Maitlis, who presented the show until last year, said she was worried that “extraordinary and exceptional journalism” would now be lost, and said the Prince Andrew interview she conducted would not happen under the new format.

At the forefront of the Christmas schedules is, of course, Doctor Who. On Christmas Day, Ncuti Gatwa will take the reins of the TARDIS as the Fifteenth Doctor in his first adventure, alongside companion Millie Gibson.

Jamie Dornan's The Tourist will return, along with Agatha Christie's Murder is Easy. Tabby McTat will also join the festive line-up, based on Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's hit book.

Meanwhile, viewers will be transported back to 1968 in the Call the Midwife Christmas special and new series Beyond Paradise will take viewers to Devon as it makes its Christmas special debut, alongside a feature length Death in Paradise.

Kit Harington and Freddie Fox star in Mark Gatiss's adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's Ghost Story for Christmas: Lot No. 249.
