Disney+ U.K. originals “Extraordinary” and “Shardlake” will not be returning to the streamer for further seasons, Variety has learned.

Edgy comedy “Extraordinary,” which stars Máiréad Tyers and Sofia Oxenham as a pair of chaotic flatmates living in a world of superpowers, had already aired two seasons, with Season 2 ending on a cliffhanger as Jen falls into a void. It will not return for a third.

“Shardlake,” a four-part historical mystery series set in Tudor times starred Arthur Hughes, Sean Bean and Anthony Boyle, launched its first season last summer. It will not return for a second.

Despite the disappointing news, Disney+ is continuing to invest in U.K. originals, with a second season of its hit Jilly Cooper adaptation “Rivals” already underway. Other projects in the works include “A Thousand Blows,” which launches next month, documentaries about cricketer Freddie Flintoff and tragic “Love Island” host Caroline Flack and a scripted series about the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes.

I know I’m late to the party (and Lemmy search is rubbish) but I only just got a chance to watch this. I’ve always liked Wallace and Gromit, I always thought the only low point was A Matter of Loaf and Death, which was simply lacking a bit of magic. I was excited to watch this one and kept holding off for the perfect moment but it wasn’t coming so I just watched it when I had the chance.

I won’t go into loads of details but I just found it all quite unappealing. I hate to be crude but the whole thing just felt like it had been made by an American and left me suspecting that Netflix were quite heavily involved in it. It just didn’t feel like Wallace and Gromit, it felt like a Hollywood remake. It was all just so exaggerated and all the subtlety had gone. There were big grand instruments emphasising what was going on, lots of funny camerawork, and they really stressed the personalities of the characters, like how Wallace is an inventor, the relationship between the two, and Wallace being a cheery sort of fellow. And that soppy bit at the end between the two, I don’t know who felt like that had to be in there but that had American corporate thinking all over it. These kind of things were more endearing when they were just unsaid but understood. It just left it coming across like a kids film without the universal appeal. Probably explains why my 5 year old loved it.

I guess it was okay as a film on its own but it was definitely a low point for the series. I think they were trying to make it more accessible to a wider younger audience so they could turn it into a new franchise they could milk for a while.

Anyway, I wouldn’t be moaning so much but all the reviews were raving about it and I’m sat here thinking I watched a different film.

Also, something else I just thought about. Previous entries have been absolutely jam packed with jokes, like every scene was meticulously laid out. In this one they were few and far between, and they weren’t that funny when they came up. I don’t remember laughing once.

I don't want to stop interest in UK TV, however I have seen a few questions about UK TV recommendations (maybe not all in this sub).

I remember seeing this happen a lot in the UK TV subs on Reddit which always ended up being the same 20 shows giving a low signal to noise, so I was wondering whether we could preempt it by making a mega thread to point people to to improve the quality of recommendations. Perhaps have some rules, such as only a single show per comment so people can vote on what they did or didn't enjoy and end up with a ranked list?

Other thoughts I had were a mega thread per type of show, so popular sitcoms or police procedurals don't drown out interesting dramas, and therefore an index pinned to point people to?

[Edit] Maybe each comment should contain the location where it can be watched? Might be hard as region restrictions mean that folks outside the UK wouldn't add iPlayer URLs.

Simon Schama’s new show is, the BBC press blurb says, a “major” series, and it bears a grand and sweeping title, the Story of Us. One always wonders to whom such weighty first-person plurals refer – the answer here is the British people, in terms of how our postwar arts and culture have shaped who we are. But the picture of us is subjective, somewhat vague and limited to just three episodes. Major series are not what they used to be.
