If they can have handicap parking, wheelchair ramps, and other accessibility features (rightfully so!), what's the problem with helping businesses to make their stores accessible by bike?

Everyone wants to support “buy local”, and there's no better way to do it than by bike!

Seems like installing a simple bike rack would be a win-win-win all around. What exactly is the difficulty?

I don't believe for a second that it's a "they don't know unless you tell them" problem, because I've contacted many, MANY stores and plaza management to let them know that they are losing business. Nothing changes.

And it's not like they can't see people locking their bikes to signs, trees, fences, or cluttering up the walkways because they have no other options when visiting their business.

Backstory: Over the last two years, I've been adding cycling infrastructure to OpenStreetMap. Stuff like bike lanes, bike parking, repair stands, etc. I've spent dozens of hours checking plazas in a 30 km radius, local storefronts, malls, etc., to see what options they offer. It's SHOCKING to see how many have absolutely no bike parking. Large stores, post offices, coffee shops, or even gyms. I try to contact as many as I can, but almost never receive replies or acknowledgement. Contacting local representatives is even more futile, as they have no control over what these businesses do. This means I'm either going far out of my way to visit stores that have bike parking, or I take a car, which seems like madness either way.

I (sadly) replaced an older Norco MTB i was using this past year for another 30 year old, chromoly MTB in a larger frame.

Moved all the racks, fenders, wheels, tires, and accessory mounts over to the new bike.

Axiom rear rack (apparently 110lb capacity, but there's no way to move that much weight safely), Arkel shopper bag panniers (up to 29 liters each), a generic backet attached to the rack with straps for easy removal.

Any more weight, and the trailer comes out 😂

It's not super easy to ride with that much weight in the back, and when I've got front panniers on, it does stabilize things quite a bit.

This larger frame handles better than the smaller Norco frame, so it's an overall improvement.

Can someone recommend a good resource for getting a neglected bike back into riding condition? What tools I need, what sort of parts I should check if they need replacement, so on?

This came up in my Youtube recommendations and is a super neat look at how things used to be. I can't imagine trying to cycle like that after drinking wine or beer 😂

The New York Times published a pair of articles this weekend highlighting the rising number of deaths of cyclists riding electric bikes. However, in one of the most impressive feats of victim-blaming I’ve seen from the publication in some time, the NYT lays the onus on e-bikes instead of on the things killing their law abiding riders: cars.

I truck pulled out in front of me today, and I side swiped it. Luckily I know how to fall, and most of the impact went into the upper right portion of my back but the truck confused my roll a bit and I ended up with some cuts and bruises on my ankle and knee and a small crack on the back of my helmet. The one day I decide not to wear jeans...

My bike is still ridable but there's some weird vibrations when braking now. I hope the frames not bent... it probably is. The rear brake handle was bent too and I can't shift into the lowest gear. I might need a new bike and I definitely need a new helmet; not a big deal really, ICBC will cover it... I just feel lucky I grew out of the "I know how to fall so I don't need a helmet" phase.

My knee is starting to swell up... tomorrow's going to be a lot of fun. Good thing the paramedics gave some of their ambulance drugs.

I'm gunna miss that bike.

Over the last few months, there has been a steady stream of photos and videos showcasing the world’s largest bicycle parking garage that opened in Amsterdam. This facility, which is completely free for daily use under 24 hours, and this massive investment by the municipal government, is not simply to benefit those who ride bicycles.

I'm hoping someone can offer some advice.

I love long distance cycling, and plan to do a 200 km brevet within the next year (with plans to do 300 km, 400 km and beyond as my schedule allows).

I've done 180 km+ and regularly ride 80 - 100 km+ at a time (multiple times a month).

My ass, hands, and legs are totally fine until around 130 km, then saddle pain creeps in.

I will admit that doing these distances on a folding bike with 20" tires isn't ideal, and perhaps that's just the limitation I have to work with. I do have a suspension seat post and wear padded shorts on those long rides, but again, everything is quite comfortable until around 130km.

Is this a bike fit issue? A padded shorts issue? A small tire issue?

White is not the only high-level cyclist to die in Colorado in recent years. In 2020, Clif Pro Team racer Ben Sonntag was killed by a driver while on a training ride outside Durango. That driver was sentenced to serve jail time in late 2021. In 2021, U.S. masters champion Gwen Inglis was killed by a driver outside Lakewood, Colorado.

Just started trying to get better at climbing a couple of weeks ago and I'm dead. After mile 15 I was done but had no option but to keep going. 6 miles towards the finish I had to stop 4 times, but I made it!

I just came past this thing after looking around the old fortress. Sadly it was out of service and most likely won't be fixed today since it's sunday and the mechanics have their day off. Would have loved to try it out.

I was talking to a local and he said most locals rather just push or ride up the hill, since using the thing is kinda hard. May make you do the splits. It's also out of function during the night due to drunks getting wrecked on it. I guess there is a reason that it is 'the first and only bicycle lift in the world' as a tourist guide pointed out at the bottom of it.

Still really cool, i will check back again later, maybe some mechanic is bored on his day off, i am taking a day off myself here in Trondheim.

I am looking for some clip-on lights. What I have is not satisfying because the lights keep moving during a ride, which seems rather unsafe!

The San Juan Islands are beautiful! Beach access at both, the islands break up the waves so they just gently lap at the shore. Lots of hills. It was challenging for a first timer who hates climbing but I'm ready to go suffer again 🦵🦵

Today's ride and my progress this year. I've been riding pretty seriously for about 2015. At one point I was working for a bike powered composting service, where I hitched a trailer to my bike and picked up food scraps from peoples homes to bring them to a site to get composted. I'd end up with 200+ lbs on my bike, at 14-20 miles, on my 26+ lb Surly!

Alas, for the past 5 years or so I've become more of a fair weather rider since I moved and it's my rainier where I'm at. Couple with bouts of pretty intense depression and gaining 35 lbs, and I end up back at point A after I build up some muscle and a bit of endurance year after year. I also hate hills lol.

I went on my first bike camping trip a couple of weeks ago, and it was magical. I had no choice but to climb and climb and climb again; the Elevation wasn't that wild but it was just challenging enough. Since then my love of riding has been renewed and I'm going to give myself the lofty goal of 1,000 miles by January. That will pan out to 914.8 miles after today, so close to 200 miles per month. We will see how that goes! I did ride some before I started tracking but I'm going to challenge myself and not count those miles...but now I gotta start recording every ride!

This one is always divisive. Some people think they're ugly and useless, others think they're good to keep on to protect your spokes in the worst case scenario.

I just got back from the garage from cutting mine off (and unfortunately it wasn't a low quality/thin one so it took forever). I'm not against them per se but after about 1200km of riding, I noticed that it started to rattle and it was annoying me.

What do you guys/gals/pals think of them?

The move is in response to many young electric bike riders who often take to the streets without having tested for or received a typical driver’s license for a standard car. That means they are often ignorant of many traffic laws and safety information.

Assembly Bill 530, which will soon enter committee, would require both an online written test and a state-issued identification for riders who do not have a driver’s license. The bill would also ban riders under 12 years old from riding e-bikes.
