That's the question. When cooking and then pouring the water into the sink, for 10 seconds the lights on the counter turn on. These lights are usually broken and refuse to turn on manually. The lights are a strip of little LED bulbs glued on the cupboard .

i have a theory but i am not an electrician

Music discussion is very lacking here for. Compared to reddit. And yeah I know, 'just post then'. But when I search for music communities here they're empty. And it makes sense because no-one is posting. So kind of a catch 22.

now i dont exactly know how all this lemmy stuff works but... to all you musos out there, can you join me and search for music under communities (I'm using summit app) and just at a minimum subscribe to all the ones that you would be interested in(if they were popping off)?

At least that way when one of us posts, the rest of us will actually see it (I suspect).

Anyway. Keep making the world more fun for everyone else.

P.s if your not a musician, but you like golf or something, subscribe to the golf communities even if they're empty.

For me it was Terraria, Satisfactory, Tetris Effect Master Mode, Minecraft with Mekanism mod & CSGO / CS2 (almost 2000 hours in CS alone).

Edit: There are so many answers that I might only reply if I have something interesting to say. I will read all of your answers though. 🙂

Over the past several months, I've been going down the privacy rabbit hole and started ditching centralized, non-E2EE services like Discord. I've been avoiding mainstream services and managed to coax a couple of my existing Discord friends (though not most of them) to use more private services like Matrix.

There's only one problem: Nobody uses them. There is virtually no way to meet like-minded people who live near me because there just aren't enough people or communities on there. Even on Lemmy (which I know isn't totally private, but still beats Reddit) doesn't have the volume needed to come across a lot of people who live near me. I want to meet people. I want to have friends in real life.

I don't live in an urban planner's utopia. I live in a car-dependent suburb on the outskirts of a city. You can't just walk outside and meet a bunch of people, not with all of the "get off my lawn" types everywhere. You have to go somewhere else to meet people. There are cameras everywhere, so you will probably be seen in most normal meetup spots. Not to mention all of the phones.

I hate to say it, but I don't see how it's feasible to meet up with normal people without some corporation or the government finding out where you're going and who you're associated with, at least not in the U.S. where I live.

If we insist on living as hermits who only use obscure Internet services, aren't we ceding influence to the exact forces that are ruining society in the first place? Aren't we at our weakest when we're isolated and alone, yelling into an echo chamber of scattered individuals instead of forming strong local communities in the real world and educating people who aren't fully in the know?

I'm not saying that these services don't have value; I'm just starting to doubt that you can make new irl friends and be totally private at the same time. Showing up to a meetup or event with a bunch of face-covering gear and telling people to follow you to a remote place where there aren't any cameras is probably going to raise some major red flags.

But maybe I'm taking it too literally. Maybe private services are more for discussing sensitive stuff with people you already know. That's why I wanted to ask Lemmy. What do you think? How do you approach this tradeoff between privacy and staying connected with everyday people?

I'm a man in my 40s. I've tried fancy creams in the past and they were nice but I always reverted to using Nivea soft because I could buy big pots that were cheap and last a long time. I've been told that cream is nice for the body but not recommended for the face. What would you recommend for a daily use, that's not too expensive? I'm based in the UK.

Is everything alright over there? Why are you guys trying to model your telecom infrastructure off North Korea or the Peoples Republic of China?

Y'all, the UK's law about needing an ID to be on any social media platform over 10,000 users is the canary in the coal mine. Similar laws have already been proposed by US states and other countries. On a long enough timeline, this is coming for us all.

So, with that in mind, I want to get in early with some good old fashioned forum sites. You know, the kind that have no app and don't need my Fing ID to let me sign up.

Any topic welcome as long as the community is active and strong.

I assumed that this was standard behaviour/etiquette, though I'm realizing maybe it's actually not so common, and I want to know if I'm the weird one

If you don't- why not?

A few nights ago I drove to go and practice hitting some golf balls, I’m terrible, and so decided to stop at a shop on the way there.

Now I’m just in my own world, thoughts flowing constantly and so don’t think much of the shouting as I go into the shop; which has its doors open.

As I go in I can hear someone shouting get out but still I don’t realise he’s talking to me. Then I notice a dude without a shirt on approaching me menacingly, now I’m not a fighter but I instinctively turn into more a fighter stance and receive the hardest thigh kick I’ve ever had as he says leave.

Now you don’t gotta tell me twice I’m done with this shit and straight to golf. As I’m driving the next few minutes to get there I can’t stop thinking about what could be happening to the shop keepers. Not really a fan of the cops but in times like these I thought it necessary to call it in and they say they’ll send someone right out.

I call back the next day to get an update and they take a while to read the notes and say it turned into a serious incident and that an officer would call me. I have a family member in the police so for them to check and turns out it was armed robbery but she didn’t tell me anymore than that.

Just crazy when you’re put into a crazy situation out of nowhere.

One of my personal rules had to become "don't take it apart unless it broken". My wife hates that everyone brings me stuff to fix or explore. I'll be trying to get into the remote and heart monitor connected to my death bed.
