We're a group of activists in a Western country where most have been brought up with either "Israel = good, Hamas = bad" or "It's a sad, but unsolvable conflict between two equal sides". The media heavily skewed to the Israeli perspective, and our politicians want to condemn protests in support of Palestinians. Therefore, unless you purposefully seek out information on what's going on in Palestine, you won't really encounter information about the occupation, the apartheid or the human rights violations. There are a lot of gaps in people's information and understanding of the situation.

Atm there's a lot of dehumanization, a lot of "Well, what can you do? Hamas keeps attacking Israel, what are they supposed to do?". I think the Israel=Good is deep-rooted in a lot of westerners. I know it was in me.

We've asked ourselves and each other what finally broke through our previous perception, so we could see the inequality and realize that what's happening is not right

One mentioned seeing a journalist in the back of an ambulance being handed a one-year-old that had passed

One mentioned seeing a video of a caring father saying goodbye to his little girl, kissing her eyes before she was wrapped in the materiale they wrap their dead. The father clearly in denial, smiling and wishing for her to wake up.

A big one for me was being told that it's not an equal fight. It's not two equally strong countries. It's one country with a huge military, and another with barely any. Another was hearing about the human rights violations that's been going on for decades - the fabricated water shortage, the children in Israeli jails.

I believe these are the moments we need to collect and present to those who are still wary on where they stand.

What broke through to you?

I found this post on Hacker News https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38421110 and in it a comment that sparked my interest: "Only tangentially related but: I have a blue light filter (Plasma night color) always on on my laptop because I feel like, in combination with brightness reduction, I get less eye strain. I've always wondered if there exist a color scheme for desktop theme or IDE / neovim theme or whatever that is thought with night color in mind, i.e. it's made specifically to be looked at with blue light filter reduction, so that all choices of color work, because for example I use solarized light in neovim but when doing diff I need to turn night color off because otherwise I can't read selected text."

Does anyone know if such a thing exist? I too have blue light filter on my PC on all the time so everything is yellow/red tinted depending on the time of the day but sometimes I have difficulties reading some text in certain colours because of it.

I'm sorry if this isn't the right community to ask this.

Anybody been thru the process before and know what the approximate costs and details are about getting a cat seen for potential asthma?

She has a really jerky/compressed in/out breath that makes her stomach look hiccupy and she often has several fits of dry heaving all day. She used to throw up constantly but not so much anymore but she still has her training to jump of the couch whenever that arises.

Thanks ๐Ÿฑ

Lo and behold, I have Ubisoft wallet funds! And it just happens to be that it's everyone's favourite time to buy games, Cyber Monday.

So, my question for all the Lemmings out there is: What are your top five (5) must-play Ubisoft games? I'm talking pseudo-classics, like AC2. Gems from the past decade that can run on anyone's hardware. Note that the older the game is, the higher the discount is, and thus more accessible.

And...Discuss!

Let's say that I feel a little pain after doing some exercise I don't normally do.
Is it okay to, say, walk normally instead of limping a bit with a minor pain in a leg, or does it make the muscle's condition worse?

sorry for my layman terminology, but to my understanding as a coder a function has a name, parameters, arguments and operations. if sin is the name, and its parameters are side opposite and hypotenuse, and its arguments are context dependent, what is the operation itself? am i making sense?

def sin (hypotenuse, opposite):
     ??!?!?!!?

Excluding, say, here or the fediverse more broadly.

There have been some nice corners of the internet that have somehow kept going along their way that I've enjoyed lurking around like some alien observer. They are the few spaces I dare not pop in and ask, out of fear it would somehow break things.

Hi everyone,

I'm currently on the lookout for a self-hosted budgeting tool that utilizes the envelope method, similar to what YNAB offers. I've been using Firefly III for a while, and it's great, but I'm seeking something that brings the budgeting aspect more to the forefront, rather than something I refer to in hindsight.

Ideally, I'd like a tool that allows for proactive budget management, where I can allocate funds to specific categories or 'envelopes' ahead of time. This way, I can track my expenses against my budget as they happen, rather than just reviewing them after the fact.

Additionally, having an iOS app for easy access and management on the go would be a huge plus.

Does anyone have recommendations for tools that fit this description? Any suggestions or insights from personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

This question will require some explaining, so bear with me (I phrased it how I did because I wanted to emphasize one of the connections). I ask this here because economics seem to be a huge topic here, especially when it comes to certain schools of thought (not that I'm judging, you have your reasons).

So here is me trying to explain my question.

First, I must admit I find the concept of a minimum wage to be, for a lack of a better word, incomplete (weird? not well-oiled? I couldn't find the word). While being based by the hour albeit not factoring in the amount of work done, I understand basic existence amounts to a certain etimated value, and you don't want overhaggling, so a glass floor is made. But a glass floor can break under pressure. But I digress.

Anyways, I was talking to someone about the concept, and we started using analogies using letters in place of concepts: "W cannot pay X a certain amount of Y so in order to pay to live she goes to Z."

It was one of those no-context moments, so our minds were drawn to a third friend who related to it platonically, this person wasn't mentally compatible with most social groups, so then criminals (the Z) would come and say "come join us, we have the friends you're looking for".

He added, "police consider 'bad crowds' a huge problem, but nobody pays the involuntary loners any minimum due, no glass floor provided by the public sector, no nothing, and the wrong people get the upper hand here because they're there to farm you while you just want someone to value you enough in a way that translates well to you, and our bedroom community becomes a gossip-cursed cesspool because there is no adhesive". Should point out this isn't a new thought process, in fact it's relevant to me occupationally.

Promoters of universal basic necessities of Lemmy, why is there a lacking here? Is it not weird we (officially) have it out for one aspect but not the other?

I almost always read in the news/press that dentists recommend to brush teeth two times a day for 2-3 minutes.

This drives me crazy, because it does not make sense; The point for dental health is to systematical clean every surface of your teeth twice a day (and use inter-dental brushes/floss once a day). For me, brushing my teeth takes around 6 minutes, if I hurry up. For someone faster it might be possible in 1 minute.

So, why do dentists always give the 2-3 minutes recommendation?
