Disclaimer

Not trying to blame anyone here. I‘m just taking an idea I‘ve read and spinning it further:

Intro

A lot of people use free open source software (foss), Linux being one of them. But a lot less actually help make this software. If I ask them why, they always say „I don’t have the coding skills!“.

Maybe its worth pointing out that you don‘t need them. In a lot of cases it’s better to not have any so you can see stuff with a „consumer view“.

In that situation you can file issues on github and similar places. You can write descriptions that non technical people can understand. You can help translate and so on, all depending on your skills.

Other reasons?

I‘d really like to know so the foss community can talk about making it worthwile for non coders to participate.

Work have started trying out signal for messaging, but I'd rather not have all my personal contacts and conversations on a machine I don't own

Is there any way I could white/black list certain contacts from one device, or is the only way to manage two separate accounts? (If so, is there an easy/built in way to do that on windows/nixos)

I'll start. Not to toot my own horn but I feel I'm at least partially responsible for getting a friend to see the value of romantic love, which she managed to find!

Let's say someone created a Wikipedia clone with Activitypub support, so you can freely read and edit articles on other servers. Basically the same way that Lemmy works. What would be a good name for such a project? Bonus points if the name goes with a cute animal mascot.

Edit: Here you can see the names of existing Fediverse projects.

When receiving unsoliciting phone calls by telemarketers, many people consistently hung up, don't bait, and don't interact. So why don't telemarketers delete from their databases such phone numbers that don't lead to any sales or other business benefits?

Maybe the cost of keeping the numbers is so low telemarketers just don't bother. Or keeping track of what numbers to delete may actually have a cost. Or perhaps telemarketers hope those people will eventually pick up the calls.

Any insight?

Is there a way for me to export a list of the communities I'm subscribed to and import this list to another account on another instance?

I feel like this describes me a lot but I also feel like it gives me a broad and eclectic knowledgebase that my employment has nothing to do with and has no mutual relevance to

Idk, something chill like Hakim Shaoqi... or Mikhail Sorensen

Each in different scripts (arabic et chinese) or (Cyrlic and Roman)

Eg. 少奇 حكيم (for completely foreign name) or Михаил Sörensen

Greetings.
I'm in quite of a pickle here, and just thinking about it will get me nowhere.

.

I attend a group hobby weekly.
Quite often we go for a follow-up hang-out in the local bar. I recall everyone else buying a drink and coming to sit down to have a chat.
I don't buy anything. I wait for the first of us ordering and then I follow them to the table.

One of our attendees has commented on my behavior twice so far.
First she said that I'm a bum. That I use the bar's staff and the place for my own benefit. There's a chance that she said that in front of someone else.
Last night she commented that I'm still doing this (we two sat alone for a while). She's afraid that they'll throw us out because of my behavior.

I explained that I rarely buy stuff from bars.
On the second comment I said that I'll probably continue this behavior to the end of times and they won't throw us out because everyone else spends money. And that my friend said that she or her friends do the same thing quite commonly.
I could have felt her loathing upon me.

I don't have the money to buy pricy consumables.
I have my own water bottle and sometimes snacks from a market to keep my belly full enough. Or then I don't eat anything and eat later.
I'm there because of the company.

The employees haven't commented anything about my behavior. I don't know, would they even care.

.

Thoughts?
Am I unfair or is she?

I'm thinking about asking her next time that should I just leave if I'm such a bother to her.
I'm also thinking about suggesting us to talk about this as a group.

.

EDIT: I don't think this is about alcohol. I believe most of them order something else cos it's late Monday and most people go to work the next day.
EDIT2: We don't have the tipping culture here.
EDIT3: Thanks for all the comments! You give my mind and feels some peace 💗

I know there are sites out there designed for finding Lemmy communities that aren't within your instance but it can be a difficult to find some more abstract ideas.

For example a community for goofy joke "million dollar" ideas like a gag gift for suburban moms that consists of divorce papers in a red frame that says "Break in case of emergency" or a gun that plays the Danny Phantom lines "He's a phantom" or "I'm going ghost" whenever you pull the trigger.

i deleted an app and chose to keep its data saved, then i installed a newer apk. it asks me if i want to 'update' rhe app, not 'install' it. i select to update an app that isnt even installed and it then says it cant due to 'App not installed as package conflicts with an existing package.' so to re-cap, i saved the data from an app and now i cant find out how to delete the data thats causing my phone to think i already have an older, conflicting version. i went to files/android/data and uninstalled it there too but that did nothing. advice?

Every single large server in this federation has at least one Star Trek community. There is even an entire server dedicated to Star Trek.

Not only that, these communities are some of the most active I've ever seen. There is no other franchise I know of that dominates the federation as much as Star Trek does.

So, what's the correlation with Lemmy and Star Trek? Why not other sci-fi series? Please, are there any connections?? Is this all coincidental?

My views on things often differ from those in my social circle. I am often bombarded with article links and videos from people with no words of their own attached. It is very easy to send a link. It takes a bit of effort to form a coherent paragraph expressing a single thought.

I would describe this kind of communication as lazy and not very good. I am sure others experience this often as well. I am wondering if there is a proper term for it, or if it is worth trying to coin a term for it.

I'm a middle aged guy, who, a few years ago, was off handedly told by a dental hygienist while getting my teeth cleaned, that I was tongue tied. I've had a flap of skin under my tongue which holds it down, it isn't severe, but it does restrict my tongues mobility. For instance, I can't really stick my tongue out very far (causes issues for... certain.... activities). And I can't reach the back of my rear molars, something I'm told normal people can do with ease. But it isn't a severe tongue tie by any means. I've also been told that when talking I use different mouth movements then other people for some words, I had no idea what that meant until I started working full time remote and was on camera all the time. I've seen out going video of my self and can spot the weirdness in talking that was referenced.

The dentist has painted this whole story about how my level of tongue tie prevented my palette from widening like it should have as a baby, resulting in a higher palette which pushed up into the sinuses, and also made my face more narrow then it would have been. Obviously, they can't prove any of this, but it's interesting to consider.

My dentist office has added a whole department dedicated to correcting tongue ties, and they push this very heavily. I'm just worried I'd regret having it corrected, but it sure would be nice to have more tongue mobility for the reasons I've described.

Are there any other Lemmings who are in a similar scenario to me? Did you go through with correcting the issue, did you like the end result, did you regret it? What was recovery time like?

I would be here all night if I asked the Lemmy crowd every question I had, but one thing that always has stood out to me is what's on the tin. Call me one of those childfree peoples for asking it how I did (note ahead of time that I do not judge people who have kids, I just find the alternative better), but it's a topic I've always been in-tune to. It's noble if you ask me, and instinctively, I make a large mental note whenever it happens, when it's common amongst a group of people, etc. This shouldn't be seen as that unusual, it's just a good gesture and many would be expressing this up here if they have the incentive to.

That said, I noticed a deterence when it comes to "vegans" and "communists" (I put these in quotes to denote a broader category, not really to express a stance). Adoption is not something you really hear amongst conversations about the latter. They're sometimes stereotypically associated with orphanages but that's as far as things go. I would challenge people to find texts from such a nation that said something along the lines of "and then that child was adopted". It's like it doesn't happen. Meanwhile, we're "implied" (without it being clarified) that "vegan culture" is at odds with "adoption culture". And the people I ask of are unique in that there really is no avoidance otherwise, you could go to any group of people, nationwise/identitywise, and they'll have normal-to-idolizing opinions on the matter, with it being common to find clerical stories pertaining to it. I myself raise an eyebrow at this, especially with the way certain countries deal with the issue, through exportation and facilities and whatnot.

Not one to turn down an opportunity to ask/address everything in one fell swoop, I wanted to ask many of you due to experience, is there a reason or is it just not something that culturally comes to mind?

I wanna see instances federated with most instances now that in individuals can ban entire instances. I know theres still some instances you want completely blocked from the off tho.

Do instances want to remain legally protected by blocking all those instances?

What do yall think about that?

I mean more like space tech and launches, not astronomy (though I wouldn't mind a bit of that).

I wanna stay updated but know literally no good sites.

Ads are ok if not disruptive or inappropriate. RSS would be nice.

Youtube channels / newsletters or other forms of media work too as long as they're good (except for podcasts, don't listen to those).

You can point to a lemmy community, but I never rely exclusively on an aggregation site for news.

Mad Max Fury Road. They defeat the tyrant, and get the control of the water valves. Then they open the valves and seemingly keep them open. One problem, how long is the water reservoir gonna last now?

Logan's Run. The city dwellers are freed from the computer's iron-fisted rule, and Carrousel. But their city is in ruins, and thinks to the computer providing everything. They don't know how to live without it. The city dwellers are going to start dying off real fast.

I'm 62 years old and I just heard about the Hanukkiah for the first time tonight on puppy dog pals. What the heck? How can I live my entire life and never have heard of this. I've been around plenty of Jewish people and we talked about Hanukkah plenty of times. I've known about the menorah. I've known about the dreidel. But I've never heard of the hanukkiah before tonight.

My wife, who has the nearest thing I've ever met to a photographic memory also had no knowledge of this term. She was born and raised in England I was born and raised in America. Neither of us lived in isolation.

What is going on?
