I often hear of people in work from home opportunities but I find them so rare to come across. What sites / resources do you use to find remote work opportunities? Which companies still do work from home?

I want to reverse engineer api of an Android app to make a custom client that works on linux. I have good understanding of Linux, Networking and coding.

Where should I start? Is it too hard?

What do you think is best for a poor just coming out gay guy in his 30s trying to escape the things that come with street life. I am also more interested in older people than people my own age. Afaik there is no place for me.

I fully assume I'll end up homeless but I have to leave.

I'm open to other areas too. Definitely away from north east/new England. Preferably away from East Coast.... Preferably near the ocean or a good lake... I don't want to be stuck in crime or around homophobes.

Im not fully grasping how the mind of those "copycats" works. People who are obsessed with Columbine for example, and want to do a mass shooting. That is their thought process? Is there some study I can read exploring what's on their minds?

How do you know that you know anything? How do you know you can rely on your senses? (As in: I know the rock exists because I can see the rock. How do you know you can see it?)

If knowledge is reliant upon our senses and reasoning (which it is), and we can't know for sure that our senses are reasoning are valid, then how can we know anything?

So is all knowledge based on faith?

If all knowledge is based on faith, then is science reliable?

If all knowledge is based on faith, then what about ACTUAL faith? Why is it so illogical?

I am one of the admins of Beehaw and I'm trying to get some feedback on our potential move.

Let's start out with a little Beehaw history before judgements are passed, please.

A handful of us were beta testing Tildes when we decided to have discussions on a Discord server.

We decided that our 'Northern Star' or guiding principle would culminate as 'Be Nice' with purposefully vague/flexible interpretations. Our overall goal is to provide a safe space to disenfranchised persons.

We talked for a little over a year and some of our members became impatient. Then someone stepped in to suggest a couple of platforms that we could consider getting started with.

One of those platforms was Lemmy. None of us knew, at that time, anything about ActivityPub.

During the Reddit exodus (surrounding the API outcry and blackout), our instance exploded. We were, initially, crippled by the mass amounts of users seeking refuge.

Thankfully, someone stepped in and volunteered hundreds of hours of work to stabilize our instance and refine it further.

After many hours of talks, it became clear to us that our overall goal could be achieved outside of Lemmy/ActivityPub.

Right now, we feel that Lemmy and ActivityPub have downsides that are limiting us from achieving that goal.

Is there a community for discussing which Lemmy instances are offline at the moment?

I bought a 3d printer off Ebay which got delivered not too long ago, and it came with 2 sd cards - one with a build video and some demo print files, but worryingly another card that has all the previous owner's personal files on there.

Not sure whether to format it, or to contact the seller offering to send the card back (free of charge)... how would you prefer to be approached in a similar situation?

Edit: No gcode files are on the card, just 30gb of pictures, music and videos. Sent the seller a message offering to upload it to cloud or to send the card back

I'm looking for a way that's appreciated by the community and doesn't break any rules. I just created one that I think was missing here.

I don't buy presents for my coworkers and friends. Instead I write poetry to them.

I started combining their names with whatever words rhyme with it, sometimes with very funny results. However, Id like what I write to sound more elegant and intimate.

I also tried combining their physical features with whatever rhymes with nose, arm, eye... Sometimes results are also funny.

If it helps, most of my coworkers are women, all of them are strictly platonic friends. Id also write a poem to a male coworker.

I have been interested in psychology lately and was wondering if there is anything out there like the 'Philosophize This' podcast but for psychology.

I just need to dip my toes into a topic and if I'm interested I can read books about it later.

Mosquito's proboscis is sharp enough to penetrate your skin. So when you smack it while it is in the process of drawing your blood, isn't there a chance of its proboscis being forcefully jammed into your skin, leading to some sort of "splinter"? Or does it somehow loses its stiffness the moment it feels the impact?

I've never encountered nor heard of such occurrence in my lifetime of killing those buggers, but wondering if such a thing is even possible. If such could happen, I could only imagine the risk associated with having a piece of foreign organic matter being embed in the body

Does anyone know of a good FOSS IP detector? I'm thinking of something like https://www.whatismyisp.com/ or https://whatismyipaddress.com/. Like how https://librespeed.org/ is a good alternative to https://www.speedtest.net/.

I'm really worried about the state of the US despite being a white male who was I'll coast right through it. I'll also accept "I don't" and "very poorly" as answers

I was homeschooled previously with a small group of other children and we fart in class all the time.

Now I'm in public school for high school and no one is farting. I was very sheltered and public school is like a whole new world for me, so I don't know what the norms are. I've been holding it in but my stomach hurts and it leaks out anyway.

I don't understand how there are so many more people in high school and yet zero farts...

Is there a feature for mods of an instance to shadowban users so that even if they post nobody will see it? I'm curious due to recent activity on some accounts, mainly the fact that they've received no replies (or points) to posts asking questions.
