I like having knives, forks, spoons left to right as that is how I say it "grab a knife and fork".

I am staying in an Airbnb and they have the spoons separating the knives and forks and wonder if this is in insane or maybe I am the minority/insane one?

My 10-year old son plays, but has learning disabilities and is having trouble understanding why he's doing things. I was hoping to find a video game he could play that would help him learn practically in a non-teaching environment. Without coaches, parents, and other players triggering his anxiety.

Thanks if you can help.

I'm not talking about a hex key that extends in length but one where it can collapse in on itself to increase in size.

I did some digging online but all I could find was a patent from a company called TeleHex but it kind of sounds like they came and went in the mid 2000s. They're website doesn't seem to exist.

I feel like it could save space in my pocket compared to a typical hex key set or a multibit.

I was hoping I could at least find a bootleg version on Ali Express.

If you're from a non English speaking country, do you first have to learn English if you want to get into programming?

the most egregious example I can think of is antiwork in reddit. Posters there love to rant against companies, but they also give good advice regarding laws in different states and is a good source to deal with micromanagers and toxic workplaces.

But it's like they simply don't think that reddit is making money with every post they write. It's like they're working for the enemy they so much despise, a large corporation.

It baffles me that people keep posting there. Is the fediverse alternative really that bad?

I'm politically agnostic and have moved from a slightly conservative stance to a vastly more progressive stance (european). i still dont get the more niche things like tankies and anarchists at this point but I would like to, without spending 10 hours reading endless manifests (which do have merit, no doubt, but still).

Can someone explain to me why anarchy isnt the guy (or gal, or gang, or entity) with the bigger stick making the rules?

I was scrolling through top/day, and all the memes are criticizing America. Oil memes and stuff like that. Why is that (not the memes in themselves, but the near unanimousness of the themes)?

Basically just the title. With DVDs getting tossed to the wind it made me wonder when will blu-rays go? I'm gonna miss bloopers and extra scenes

Edit: A bit confused but the general consensus is that in some areas BRs have already began to be phased out while in others they're just trucking along perfectly fine. It'll be that way until they stop being profitable to the studios who make them. Is that correct? I don't think the 8k argument is valid imo since that's really niche currently.

I'm starting to notice my hair is thinning a bit. Nothing drastic. Just natural aging. No, nothing unusual came up when I got my blood tests, my doctor didn't find anything wrong with me.

I'm just asking to see if any of you had good luck with any products. I know grafting is an option, and I also know that there are hair clinics which are very expensive etc. but I'm after an "at home" method.

Is there a product you would recommend?

Can anyone recommend cheap laptops that have good build quality and see lightweight?

I aim to use it for programming, but I connect to my desktop for most hefty work so it doesn't need to have solid performance. 8 GB RAM, 256 GB storage are enough for me. a lower grade CPU would still be good; a i3 that's 6 cores is enough.

What's really important to me is build quality, especially the keyboard. I also don't want it to be big. 13" would be enough, but not too picky here.

Any recommendations? And are there any communities that are better to ask this in?

Budget: I am hoping to pay $400 or less, but willing to pay $1000 or even more if it's justified or the value is worthwhile

OS: Linux. I can install it myself.

Does anyone have recommendations for books that deal with imposter syndrome and/or dealing with it?

Context: I'm currently building my own business and moving towards self-employment. I got a few free coaching sessions through my job, so I've begun meeting with a business coach. Today, we touched on the issue of imposter syndrome. I'm familiar with the concept, but I want to read up on it before my next coaching session. I've seen memes about imposter syndrome in software development, which is a hobby of mine, but I haven't come across it much in the context of starting a business or in videography. I'm pretty sure it exists in these areas too, though.

For example did someone die because you bought him/ her tickets to a concert and on the way to that concert they had a car accident?

Thats what I mean by "indirectly"

For instance, YouTube Premium charges 12€ in my home country. However, where I’m staying now they would charge less than 3€.

So, if I would like to take advantage of this, I assume I’d need to create a new Google/YT account, which would mean I’d lose all subs, playlists etc that I’ve created?

Or am I missing something here?

I’ve been thinking lately about the concept of the fediverse and repurposing it toward the goal of creating a free and open, decentralized, federated network of vendors that run instances or groups of vendors that run one instance together. These instances would broadcast inventory updates to each node that they federate with. It would start off niche and gain traction that way before branching out into other retail types.

Is this a feasible idea? Has any pulled this off? Wayfair, Amazon, Shopify, and Etsy are already suffering from enshittification. Someone needs to take the inventory out of the walled gardens and back into the customer’s hands. I shouldn’t have to rely on Google to find products I want. There are vendors that want to sell me stuff nearby…it’s just a problem of connecting the user to the content..and this seems like a no-brainer.

I’d love to have a discussion about this. I am seriously considering creating a rolling fork of Lemmy that would maintain parity but also add this functionality but I want to talk to experts and weigh the pros and cons before embarking on such an ambitious project.

edit: I also started a community ( https://infosec.pub/c/federated_inventory ) dedicated to the discussion of this idea. I'm trying to get vendors in a budding local industry to fund the creation of this system, which would branch out into all retail industries eventually along with the network effect.

Don't know if we already have this but if not, this could be a new breath for running away from Google's polluted, hard to find any real useful stuff SEO World. With Kagi's optimization for activity pub, it's easier to find content within the Federation. With a blog system that supports activity pub, people can get interaction from Mastodon, Lemmy, PeerTube etc. And the best part is, you can do all these stuff with your self-hosted sites.

If we already have this, please let me know.

When I go to work I find it difficult to greet my coworkers when they're talking, and my coworkers talk a lot. I don't want to disturb them, so I don't say anything and let them speak. After that I don't find it necessary to greet them, because we've already seen each other. I don't do it to troll them or because I hate them and it baffles me that people can take that personally and feel attacked.

Another thing I don't understand is why people cannot simply work fast and then relax and talk. I do that and my pauses are longer. I don't understand why people prefer to work a bit and then gossip. I find that very tiring. I need structure.

Coworkers think I'm a loner, nothing wrong with that, I like being alone, but sometimes I wonder if I'm a bit autistic.

Leaving my current position is not feasible, it would mean taking a considerable pay cut.

I don't want to pretend something I'm not. I don't drink alcohol or coffee and don't smoke. I'm not gonna start doing that just to be a bit more popular.

I trust the provider, and it's a small amount I'm willing to risk. Just don't want to throw it away, be frustrated, or get involved with shady people.

Android/Windows user, btw.

For those people who are wondering why I would ask Lemmy strangers about my money decisions, let me tell you my thinking.

I am in the decision making process. One of the things I do when making decisions is gather information from a variety of sources. I then weigh that information as to how useful I find it, research any possible leads, and use it as a launching point for my own investigation. I find that beats the hell out of googling whatever I can think up on my own in a field where I have no experience whatsoever.

For clarification, I'm not telling anyone else how to do anything. You humans live your life however you want, and I respect you as individuals with opinions of your own. Live how you want to live, choose how you want to choose, be how you want to be.

Much peace to all ✌️

When I was a kid I always liked going on Scout camps. I think what I liked specifically was:

  • It meant spending an extended period of time (whole days, with little break) in the same collective of 20+ people.
  • I would drift between the various groups there, and would get to know everyone.
  • The collective would experience new situations every few hours, or even just being bored together when 'nothing' was happening (when waiting for stuff etc.).
  • (Possibly also the fact that there was an authority above us and we didn't decide things for ourselves..?)

What I liked was how there was a strong feeling of community because we were all experiencing the same thing together. Being around people meant my mind was continuously in the present. For these reasons I feel that this is the environment I thrive in the most.

Unfortunately this would only ever happen once or twice a year, and since I am 20 I wanted to ask if anyone can think of any job descriptions where this happens.

The first thing I thought of is working on a submarine but I was hoping for something a bit less radical. I thought this might be the experience in university dorms but it turns out that in my country dorms are pretty dead because with the exception of cooking, people stay in their rooms.

I'm letting people who hurt me in the past live rent free in my mind.

One episode involves a former landlord that tried to run me over in an intersection with no traffic cameras.

Another one involves a manager that fired me for informing that one of his favorites yelled during night shift and ignored alarms to talk. He fired me the next day, used the exit interview to tell me everything I didn't do right (but kept quiet about his favorites, even though I did the job like them), still had the utmost confidence on his favorites, accused me of being lazy and instead of simply firing me and keeping neutral he chose to take it personal, proceeded to try to scare me insinuating I wouldn't work for his system again, when that failed, tried to humiliate me and then fired me. This was in an non union hospital.

When I think about it I get angry. Id like not to be so thin skinned, but here I am.
