So John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats does this thing in some of his lyrics where he'll start a sentence out with a verb as though it's an imperative, but it's from a first-person POV. There's a lot of examples but the song "Counterfeit Florida Plates" is the one that comes to mind first, for me. Is there a technical term for what he's doing here?

EDIT: changed wording to be less ambiguous

I've read piped is a frontend, but I don't know what that means. I'd still connect to the youtube servers, only through piped. What does that mean for the end user?

I already use tor and adblockers so, what would I gain?

My grandmother wants to install Mahjong onto her phone. I couldn't find any results on the Play Store with no ads or in-app purchases. She doesn't understand technology and could get tricked into purchasing stuff or compromising her data.

Proton pass

Guys I use proton mail and proton pass but the issue I have is that how can I have a secure password for proton mail with 2fa if I use proton pass? If I have a less difficult password then I am lowering my security and If I want to have a 2fa (with local encrypted file) then I have to save it on some secure cloud, which for me is proton drive or mega then again I have those passwords saved in proton pass so I would have to login to proton pass first, If I lower password of those apps then again it risks security. ( I am sorry I am so confused). Please help!

Basically the title. In the US I've heard the fables of King Arthur and Robin Hood constantly. What are some other fabled heroes from antiquity that are less well known? Something from a non-Western culture.

Idle question. I've always heard that you need to prick the skins before baking a potato. The potential consequence for failure to do so is a catastrophic potato explosion.

Has anyone had this happen to them?

We know what happens with peaceful protests, elections, and foreign interference (and more foreign interference), so how can Palestine gain it's freedom? Any positive ideas are welcome, because this situation is already a humanitarian crisis and is looking bleaker by the day.

Historical references are also valuable in this discussion, like slave revolts or the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, although hopefully in the case of Palestine a peaceful and successful outcome can be achieved, as opposed to some of the historical events above.

Okay so I work in one of those amazing tech companies where you have to submit 360 feedbacks every 6 months & will be PIPed etc. As here because unfortunately the programming related communities seem pretty inactive.

My former manager had putted me on a PIP before switching teams (first time ever in my 10 YOE). I somehow managed to survive that and now was asked to provide a 360 feedback for this old manager who PIPed me.

I didn’t bother to answer the request, but now the skip level of that manager reached out via Slack and wants my feedback because they’re having „additional calibration sessions“. He asked me to provide it via Slack „to save time“.

I asked ChatGPT to word it in corporate speak so it sounds diplomatic even though it’s like 70% „constructive feedback“, but I’m wondering if I have anything to gain from this.

Would you send the feedback? Is it weird that they want it via Slack when it takes like 2 minutes more to fill this out in Workday?

I've gotten into Duolingo speedrunning, and I'm pretty good at it, and I want to compete against others. Are there any Duolingo speedrunning communities or Discord servers around?

I know there are Quest 2/PC crossplay, asymmetrical games, but what about Quest 2/Switch? I mean where one person would be playing a game on Switch and the other the same one on Quest 2, together.

Sometimes I come accross a comment that provides really good insight about a topic, and I want to keep it around. The problem is that the save feature on Lemmy/Reddit just creates one massive pile of hundreds of comments. This defeats the point of saving it because when I later encounter the topic that it related to, I'd still have to dig through this massive pile to be able to find it – so the save feature has in fact not made it any more accessible. I feel like someone on the internet must have surely worked out how to catalog these snippets of text in a way that allows you to quickly find the ones relevant to what you're currently doing. Perhaps some sort of tagging/mind map system? What do you use? I have considered Google Keep but my Keep is already a mess as is.

The medication is a blood thinner, the patient is a competent adult not in delirium, A&OX4. There are 2 ways to see this:

Manager's and a group of doctor's POV: you are a nurse and it's your job and duty to do that. Plus, we know better than him what's good for him. These people have built their identity around working in healthcare and to them this means I have to stay in the room and make sure the patient takes the medication.

My POV: nursing is not a calling but a job. What my manager and these doctors think is stupid:

  • the patient is a competent adult not in delirium, A&OX4. He's old enough to know what happens if he doesn't take the medication because we have told him a number of times already. I'm not his father and I'm not ready to treat a competent adult like a child.

  • I have other patients and I'm not going to waste my time watching a patient silently until he decides to take the medication. I'm charting that I left the medication next to him and told him he needs it and why and that I have other patients to take care of.

  • It is stupid to watch a person while doing nothing when I should be working with my other patients. It's also invasive as f*ck.

I see it like this: my manager and this group of doctors are not ready to respect a person's autonomy whereas I'm not ready to ignore this same autonomy, even if it means a negative outcome. Respecting a consenting adult's autonomy means respecting his bad choices as well. I feel this group of doctors and my manager are not ready to respect any patient's autonomy.

At this moment, this is a hill I'm willing to die on. AITA?

ETA: I wrote about a group of doctors, because there are other doctors that don't give me hard time if a patient refuses his medication, they simply chart it and move on. I like working with doctors like this because I feel they don’t judge and respect the patient's autonomy as well.

Here and there we see people earning and losing career over Twitter, Facebook posts, even if illusionary, it makes news.

When would Mastodon, Lemmy posts get enough traction to get into news?

Unlike them, Reddit has zero credibility, but still has many articles about it and internal reddit dramas.

Where would we as a fediverse reach the point ArsTech and others would refer to our post and comments as a proof of something?

We have a wet dream of them all relocating from X-itter to free platforms and self-hosting, but the first breaking point would be if they refer to us like we are real. When and how it would be? I don't know.

The longest (and ONLY!) one I've seen is Shoe and Shoelace on Family Guy lol
