Context: I'm a second year medical student and currently residing in the deepest pit in the valley of the Dunning-Kruger graph, but am still constantly frustrated and infuriated with the push for introducing AI for quasi-self-diagnosis and loosening restrictions on inadequately educated providers like NP's from the for-profit "schools".

So, anyone else in a similar spot where you think you're kinda dumb, but you know you're still smarter than robots and people at the peak of the Dunning-Kruger graph in your field?

Hey y'all, I'm a warehouse worker in Illinois, when I was hired on I was promised $17.50 an hour. I got access to the employee self service recently to find out these past 4 months I've been getting paid $17. Now I don't have any actual on paper proof of this but I remember very clearly thinking , "$17.50, hey that's just a dollar less than my girlfriend who's already in the field, neat!" And I'm a little miffed about this discrepancy, because I know it probably happened because my department manager is scatter brained.

I don't need any legal advice or rallying cries here. I just wanna know cause I already sent him an email saying I found this, this isn't what I was told, can I come over to your building later and talk about this? How should I broach this? Obviously I want to start with friendly energy but stay stern that this is not the rate I was told I would be getting. Thoughts?

She is a good coworker, meaning she knows her duties and has ample experience.

She is also a gossip and a person that will rant when somebody doesn't greet her the way she believes she deserves to be greeted, or about how a coworker or manager wasn't friendly to her. It's both what she says and how she says it, like she was hurt.

I still don't know if what she wants is that everyone stops doing their jobs when she enters the workplace to give her attention, because otherwise, apparently, people hate her. She is also very pretty. Not that I'd want a relationship with her, because this trait is very off putting.

I've already heard her saying I'm not friendly and I don't know who should I react. I think it's ridiculous to start giving her attention to keep the peace because I have things to do that pay my bills and it would be very draining, I cannot fake interest in things that bore me. I don't understand why we can't just do our jobs and go home.

My neighbour has a cat called Stevie. Stevie hangs out with us a lot and we look after him when my neighbour is away.

Yesterday we found Stevie very unwell in our garden. We took him to the neighbour and she immediately rushed him to the vet.

She mentioned the vet was 200 dollars which was a big unexpected expense for her. Her son's birthday is on Monday and she won't be able to do anything for his birthday now.

My wife and I are fortunate enough for 200 dollars to not be a lot of money for us and we want to help, but I'm unsure how.

One option would be that we leave her a little card with 100 dollars and write that we wanted to help because we care about Stevie too.

Another idea is we ask her to do some gardening for us (that's her job, and we're too busy to do it ourselves right now).

I don't want her to feel patronised or awkward about any of this... Happy to take insights.

Looking to talk to people on Lemmy and places similar to r/penpal or r/dirtypenpal. If anyone knows a place on lemmy like that or if you're interested in creating a place let me know.

I recently figured out my new setup, but one thing I've been struggling with are my wallpapers. I use 3 monitors, one 21:9 and two 16:9s, one of which is portrait. As a result, my wallpaper situation is messy since wallpapers for one don't work on the others. On my old setup, I just had a big folder of backgrounds I collected over the years set to be a sideshow using the default windows settings, and I'd like to do something similar, but with a specific folder for each monitor. I've tried the steam wallpaper engine, but to do that, I'd have to individually import each background as a new wallpaper which would be far too intensive given the volume.

I want to discuss a better means of organizing tags for websites that use a generic tagging system. I propose a tag hierarchy.

Basically, if I search for #dog, I should find posts with #puppy, #pug, #baby_pugs, #cute_dogs, etc.

But, if I search for #pug, I should only get posts with #pug, or other tags like #baby_pugs, #cute_pugs, etc.

This would make adding 50+ similar tags to a post irrelevant and allow for normal people to put a single obscure tag and still gain visibility.

I want to bring this idea up to more people. Where should I discuss this? You can suggest any website, community, or Lemmy instance where I could possibly develop this further.

I'm happy to discuss this here as well.

[Edit for clarity]: I am not just talking about tags for the federation and Mastodon. I am talking about improving any and all websites with a generic tagging system. Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc. etc.

It seems as though we are going backwards. We were doing so well in realising that all human beings are worthy individuals with emotional and intellectual depth, yet now so many of us don't seem to see any problem with society encouraging many to reduce themselves to sexual objects. How is this rationalised?

edit: typo

I have some closed-back headphones that have poor sound. Is it possible to improve the sound of the headphones by installing additional speakers?

How much better can the sound of the headphones be if the cups are covered with soundproofing tape?

It looks like taxes increase and any kind of post-life planning can be done with a few legal filings rather than getting married. Is there any real benefit? It kinda seems like it's just a way to trap people in relationships, probably traditionally, the woman.

I got my hands on MPEG-V standard documents which lets me inject "SEM" (sensory effect metadata) inside .mp4 files which would let me program real world stuff on cues like lights, chair movements, water sprays, etc. So literally if I had a NAS with a hoard of movies and bought the right equipment, i could make 4DX at home.

There's an effect description named "scent", which would, obviously, spray some aromatizer or something in the room. I checked out the standard list of scents that can be applied. There are scents like rose, lavender, mint, apples, mixed herbs, but i came across an interesting one which is the one i'm asking for.

  Scent of dragons breath
Describes the scent of dragons breath

Maybe this is a weird reason to ask this... I really want to know out of curiosity if this "dragon breath" would be some specific mix of herbs or incense or any kind of room spray. I sense it would kind of be an artificial scent... but idk... really... Would it really work if i coded a "Home 4DX" version of the Hobbit movies?

I know that nowadays there are some physics engines pretty advanced, capable of very complex simulations.

Are we at a point in technology where if, for example, we were to simulate a rock being dropped on the floor from a certain distance, the simulation can calculate the shape and weight of the rock , the air resistance experienced during the fall, the density of the floor where the rock will fall onto, and all the other thousands of factors involved, and from those things "calculate" the sound that the rock will make when hitting the floor, and then reproduce it?

Is there such a thing? Are we there yet? If not, is it something feasible?

Saw a video of a youtuber that got his account overtaken which has 2fa enabled (not sure which method but I'm thinking sms). He says he didn't get phished, downloaded anything and his session cookies weren't stolen and I believe him. The only clue is that he received a sms otp from google but was invalid when he inputted it which let's me to believe he relied on SMS for 2fa in the first place. My theory is he reused passwords and his number was overtaken but I'm not sure if that's the case since he did receive the google otp so that leaves out the common phone rep social engineering methods of porting out and fowarding. What else could it be? My paranoia is kinda acting up

Tldr: A YouTuber's account was hacked despite having 2FA. While unsure of the exact method, potential factors include relying on SMS OTP and the possibility of password reuse. No session cookies were stolen, nothing downloaded and no links clicked

Edit for timestamp: its kinda difficult since he jumps around a lot but he begins to talk about it around the 2min 30sec mark and stops at around the 6min mark

today was supposed to be my first day of therapy and the therapist didn't show up. I'm pissed off. I wasted 2 hours for nothing.

I've sent her a polite message, asking if she's sick and hoping she is well, but in reality I wanted to yell at her. However, if I yell at her, chances are she won't treat me.

Before you suggest to find another therapist, finding a shrink where I live is very difficult and the other ones I contacted have either ignored me or are overbooked. I need therapy and it bothers me to be so dependent on one person.

For those of you who have experienced something similar, how doesn't it bother you?

We all get bored sometimess and scroll mindlessly through various social media feeds, like instagram (fuck you), reddit (fuck you) or lemmy (no offense, love you guys).

Most of the time content is a wild mix of everything, from news to memes and educational stuff, and very hard to filter out.

Is there anything out there that contains educational stuff only? where you can just sit there, scroll through it and learn something. thinking of like a short text or image showing some facts, or some math examples, or physics, or whatever.

I'm hearing a lot about websites like netflix and YouTube crippling their performance in some way if you're using firefox instead of chrome/a smart TV

Is it likely to cause me problems if I just globally change my useragent to chrome instead of firefox?

Alternatively, is there an extension that automatically bypasses all of these things that people are aware of (pretends to be a smart TV for netflix, chrome for YouTube, etc automatically)

If there's not an extension, what would be involved in making one? Obviously user agent changes dependant on URL but I'm not sure what other metrics these websites might be able to use to figure out what you're using
