I'm 41F. I was married but separated 8 years ago. I was still young but was very traumatized and never really wanted another relationship. Lately I've been feeling a little lonely and would like to meet some new people but I moved and don't have many friends here and the ones I have are younger and do younger people things (like going out at night. I'm too old for that lol). I wanted to meet some people my age, friends or dates, but almost everyone is married. I do cooking and French classes but again, only young people do that and I'm the "odd old lady". I think people past 40 don't really have hobbies or money to spend on them. I'm overweight so I can't really use apps, and to be honest don't really want. So how a single woman without kids (can't have it) meet people?! Or do I just give up?! lol

I'm curious if any of you still use anything other than fediverse. Since discovering it last year I've deleted all my non fedi social media, and it feels great!

I mean i understand some matches may be fixed but when two popular players fight would any of them want to be the loser ? And the damage looks very real or is the only fixed thing the outcome ? Maybe someone from the industrty can answer . Or am i missing something if so put it into the comments and i'll edit the post.

Hey all! This may be kind of a dumb post as I know I need to make this decision myself, but I‘d sure love some advice. My oldest dog is 11, going on 12. The poor girl is diabetic, blind, has fatty lipomas, and mobility issues due to diabetes, breed, and age. This morning, we are fairly sure she had a stroke of some sort (the vet agrees with this diagnosis so far, blood work and an X-ray are incoming). She eats but doesn’t really want to get up much, and is generally just resting most of the day. She still has a bit of sparkle in her eyes but she doesn’t really seem to have much energy left. The vet hasn’t mentioned it, but I‘m pretty sure it’s about time to say goodbye. The most important thing to my partner and I is that once she’s suffering, it’s time to let go. She just ate a nice full dinner but still doesn’t want to get up and do much. How long would you give her? Till she’s not eating? The vet hasn’t brought it up yet, so maybe I should be patient, but she’s been such a good friend, I don’t want her to suffer. I’m just at a loss, and this is the first time I‘ve had to do this horrible calculus.

Every day there’s more big job cuts at tech and games companies. I’ve not seen anything explaining why they all seam to be at once like this. Is it coincidence or is there something driving all the job cuts?

The forums of old times still exist in some corners of the internet. They used to be big and there was one for pretty much every topic.

But most died over the years or got replaced by services like Facebook groups, Reddit or Discord.

Are you still using proper forums, which ones and why haven't you made the switch to other forms of communication?

I understand the problem with server overloading and the problems with hosting big database etc. But can't we host short , compressed videos with just good enough quality . Like some of the high quality gifs on lemmy is much ,much bigger than the kind of videos i described . Or am i missing something ? I do understand the issues but then why do they allow big gifs is it because people wouldn't post much gifs but everyone and their dog will post videos if allowed ? I am saying if 5 mb is the max size of gif you allow set that as videos limit too . AND I NOT AT ALL AM ASKING FOR VIDEOS ON LEMMY JUST ASKING A QUESTION . I IN NO WAY WANT VIDEOS ON LEMMY BECAUSE I KNOW HOW THAT WOULD IMPACT THE INSTANCE HOSTERS . MAYBE JUST MAYBE I SHOULD PUT MY WHOLE THOUGHTS IN A POST BEFORE POSTING AND STOP EDITING IN THINGS AS I GO LIKE AN IDIOT .

So I've seen passing ironic references to DARE in American media representing it as a bit of a joke. That media was intended for American audiences so didn't really elaborate on what the program entailed but I somehow already knew without any need of such context that it was an anti-drugs public outreach campaign and was able to laugh along having had various similar laughable campaigns aimed at youth in my Australian childhood.

But then on reflection I realised that the whole DARE thing specifically, was familiar to me, like I'd personally experienced it too, but what I remembered was a TV commercial and also seeing it as late as the 2000s. From what I've now read about the campaign it seems to have been US-centric and maybe a bit in the UK and based entirely around talks at schools. I went through my fair share of shitty talks at school, but not DARE specifically, but I can't shake a memory of an ad I swear I remember seeing, in Australia, specifically about use of marijuana, implying that the effects of smoking it aren't fun or enjoyable and then at the end of the ad having a logo or graphic referring to DARE. But I can't seem to find any evidence that this, or even any DARE commercials ever existed. It doesn't help research that we have a brand of bottled Ice Coffee in Australia called Dare who have had lots of high profile ad campaigns so that's almost entirely what comes up from search results. I found Flinders university (An Australian university) paper about the role of schools in Alcohol education which talks about DARE and its utter inefficacy but seems to be referring to the American context and specifically about alcohol. So doesn't really prove anything.

From what little I remember about the ad it was focussing on the fact that marijuana can give you an increased heartbeat and feelings of paranoia and trying to imply that this was somehow something that always happens and is the only effect of smoking it. Had some sort of tagline like 'there's nothing fun about marijuana' or some similar idiocy.

EDIT : It seems as no one understood what i was talking about and maybe its my fault for not elaborating . I always thought chicken was a metaphor for this paradox and not really meaning chicken as a specific spiece . So my question is how did the ancestor of chicken came to be if it was born (egg) wouldn't it need a parent or if it was a parent (chicken ) woudn't it need to be born ? Or did all the creatures start out as bacteria and climbed out from ocean through evalution if so why isn't any new species being born this way or am i missing something ?

I've looked at suggestions on StackExchange and made some changes to files in /etc but after each login or reboot it is up to 100 % again in pavucontrol. On this computer I hardly ever use the speakers, and I want the microphone muted, always, so I guess I could even block list a few kernel modules for sound (which ones ?). But why can a desktop user not easily turn volume to zero, forever ?

Edit : Thanks all. It was not StackExchange but on AskUbuntu from where I tried some suggestions. I also tried muting audio in Pavucontrol but that didn't help between logouts and logins. Now I have set the default audio device in Pavucontrol to Dummy, and that works. I can still play sound from a video in VLC, but the microphone keeps muted.

I'm struggling to find any communities on Lemmy, maybe someone can point me in the right direction?

It's a really dumb and minor question but it's driving me nuts trying to find a decent solution.

I've got some of those metal outdoor lanterns that have a small round solar panel on the top and an LED. They work great in the summer but there just isn't enough charge in the winter for them to get fully charged... the problem is, EVERY single one I've found ONLY charges when it's turned ON.

There seems to be 1000s of replacements on Amazon but I've not found a single one that charges while off...

I'd really like some that I can keep off but will charge anyway so I can turn them on when I'm actually using them in Winter.

Dumb question but maybe someone can point me to a Lemmy community that can help!

Some people change their socks every single day, to me that's a little to much. I'm more of a 2-3days kinda guy. Is changing socks each day absolutely necessary?

There isn't enough people on Lemmy to have niche communities finding someone interested in threads for example here is like finding a grain(Though niche communities like spec evo in for pages I own probably could take take off If I put enough effort into it) in the sand people will follow niche sub lemmings and they will upvote them because they like the idea of niche communities so they subscribe and they like the idea of niche posts so they comment even if they aren't interested in the topic. It is hit and miss with mostly misses due to the random odds that the community will have enough people to join it that are willing to post or comment. That is not surprising for a site of 50,000 people(though some niche Lemmy communities may also be in the wrong instance). It is also not surprising that most discussions will be in larger servers. I think it would improve Lemmy if niche questions like my threads post here(though collapse community sounds more targeted) were redirected to the larger Lemmy communities . Even if 90 percent of the people do not understand the topic that would mean 10 percent and with percentage that could amount to hundreds of people even at 99 percent.

The AMA will be about me an atheist who has been to an islamic exorcism and some other similar things. I mean no hate but it may get controversial or do you guys think it would be a good idea not to host one and of course i will skip questions like names etc. I may not host one if there are no good ways or if you guys think it wouldn't be a good idea . I am not posting this as any kind of politics . To clarify things i am neutral towards all religeons including islam.

EDIT : I does not hate islam well maybw a little but that's not the point . I think in a way every belief could or could not be the real one . I myself kinda believe there could be a being kinda similar to god that theists believe in or nothing at all i don't know for sure . Anyway i dont believe or follow any god from any culture . I also wanted to add that i was going to share stories about the times i went to hindu (wizards ? the guys were said to have possessed the power to put or lift curses , grand wishes. Etc .they are known as pannikars in their culture if anyone wants to look it up though i don't know ig you will find anything ) so this isn't in anyway a hit on islam i just wanted to share my experience . Also i went to these things because some of my loved ones wanted me there for support and they insisted and i couldn't deny and thought it would be interesting any way.

EDIT: The reason i said i kinda hate islam is vecause their prophet is a pedo and that isn't the kind of guy everyone should follow but some of them do. And i onece visited a mosque where the people " possesed by shaitan (the muslim demons)" were chained and treated like wild animals and non of the muslim saw anything wrong with that. In my opinion they are people with slight mental issues who were chained and abused and were turned fully mad the gimmick of the mosque was you have to do some activities there and it will reveal people possesed by shaitan .

I currently rely on workflowy, and - while it works great - I'd really rather use something that was open source. Thanks in advance.
