Trully question. I cannot be the only one who cries when listens music. I was the privellege to see my favourite artists live, but since last year, all lives I assisted on YouTube by Fred again.. , I cry . Has been my favourite musician since last year. Almost all songs, for me, are amazing and give me a bunch of emotions.

Each camera has its own analog connection wire. I am looking for a dvr box that I can connect to a home server and run something like Shinobi. but it seems to be a bit too metaphorical and not detailed enough for me.

A lot of people answering this struggle to understand what highly-specific means. I'm looking to, for the sake of experiment, highly-specific advice that gives a reader clear understanding of what they should do. Unlike the vague advice, on the contrary, that may be too abstract to get implementing it right away.

Inspired by this post but I wanted to change the question a bit to avoid the really vague answers as well as lower the age bar of target audience for the advice.

I'll start with a bunch myself, to give a better example of what I'm talking about:

1. Read The Art of War by Sun Tzu. Ironically, because this is a post about specific advice, dude wrote a book with vague rules on how to do war, but the way it is worded is ridiculously good. If you take your time to think about the advice, you can find their appliances in the most unexpected fields.

I, for example, have improved my skill in videogames, out of all places, after reading the book. Sun Tzu said "If it is not advantageous, do not move". Instead of rushing into combat, I now consider whether my position, current health, location of health packs etc. work to my advantage. Sun Tzu made me realise team-based PvP shooters give you room to avoid and disengage combat, you can make more impact for the team if you choose your battle and have everything work for your advantage.

2. Exercises are not just about a lot of dedication, long commutes to the gym, expensive memberships and the fear of being judged by other gym members. 7 minute workout is a thing and it will give you all the benefits at your own home without the need for equipment, and it won't take much time either.

3. Buy an old used Kindle. For dirt cheap, you will get a device with a good e-ink screen that works without Internet connection, still has decent battery, is light and small. A new thing that makes reading so comfortable will trick you into reading more and books still happen a good medium for sharing information.

For example, if it says “bear left” versus “turn left”, what process is it using to make that nuanced judgment?

I see two possible ways:

a) It analyzes the map visually and has an algorithm to decide, based on the angle/curve/etc, which way to describe the turn.

b) Every place where two roads meet has metadata keyed in, indicating what type of turn it is in each direction.

I think option (a) is too expensive to be done in real-time by the end-user’s GPS, so most likely if option (a) is used, it’s done periodically on the server side to generate metadata as in option (b). And then perhaps this metadata is hand-checked by a person, and things the analysis gets wrong are overridden by a person, but all of this is just speculation on my part.

This question came up when some turn-by-turn directions incorrectly said to “bear left” at a standard, right angle intersection. I wondered if someone keyed something in wrong or if there is some little blip in the way the map was drawn at the intersection that we wouldn’t visually detect, but threw off the turn-by-turn.

I expected to easily find an article spelling it out, but I haven’t been able to and it’s driving me crazy not knowing for certain!

Probably too far-fetched, but curious anyway since this would make things a lot easier.

Recently got a modded Switch with a chip and it's got custom software with this Tinfoil app on it, and I was wondering if it could be possible to somehow stream to Twitch/YouTube directly, without a capture card, using an app that would work only with a modded version of the console.

It would seem the design that can survive the most extinctions would be the clear winner in the end.

i wouldn't normally be concerned since any company releasing a VR product with this price tag is obviously going to fail... but it's apple and somehow through exquisite branding and sleek design they have managed to create something that resonated with "tech reviewers" and rich folk who can afford it.

what's really concerning is that it's not marketed as a new VR headset, it's marketed by apple and these "tech reviewers" as the new iphone, something you take with you everywhere and do your daily tasks in, consume content in etc...

and it's dystopian. imagine you are watching youtube on this thing and when an ad shows up, you can't look away, even if you try to they can track your eye movement and just move the window, you can't mute it, you certainly cannot install adblock on it, you are forced to watch the ad until it satisfies apple or you just give up and take out the headset.

this is why i think all these tech giants (google meta apple etc) were/are interested in the "metaverse". it holds both your vision and your hearing hostage, you cannot do anything else when using it but to just use the thing. a 100% efficiency attention machine, completely blocking you from the outside world.

i'm not concerned about this iteration as much as people are not hyped about this iteration. just like how people are hyped about the next apple vision, i'm more worried about the next iterations with somewhat lower price tag and better software availability. i hope it flops and i know it probably won't achieve any sort of mainstream adoption even if it's deemed a success because it probably can't get less bulky and look less dorky, but the possibility is still worrying. what are your thoughts?

I am sorry, but this is a long one.

Tldr: Seemingly interested, Cute coworker asks for my number a day and a half after meeting her, claims to want to learn Linux from me. We go out to do that supposedly, but she ends up expecting us to do separate things until she can't for reasons. We chat the rest of the night. No Linux lessons learned, no separate work done, she doesn't appear interested in me in that way from what I interpreted. It was a fun chat and she wants to do it again. What the fuck is going on?

Long version: I work in the tech industry and I have a cute coworker I just met who I for the life of me cannot tell what it is she wants.

Back story: my company has two buildings close by to each other that works with servers. I can't say what exactly we do but it isn't super relevant. However, she works at one building and I the other. I had to go over to her building and help out as we were limited on work to do at ours. She is in a technical/managing role and I am a step or two below her.

When helping out, I meet her and she seems enthusiastic to have my help. That's normal. However, throughout the day she starts to ask me about the tasks and is seemingly testing my skills as well as asking questions she may not have the answer to. We work on completely different systems at the two buildings so there are things to learn from both sides. She is also newish to her role.

First of all, she is really cute/intelligent and of course I am interested in helping her with her little side projects when the main tasks are done/waiting. So she keeps asking me for help on two person tasks. Cool, no complaints there. I am good at my job and she can see that. She seems to be rather friendly after the first day. I go home and have my weekend.

As we are slow still at my building, I volunteer to go help her building because I kinda wanted to see her again. So I ask a manager on their side and they are happy to have my help. She saw my comment about coming over in our work chat and "Hearted" it. I go over and start to help.

She tells me "it is so great to have you here, you make my job so much easier" in what can only describe as an appreciative sigh. Her current staff is new and still missing the skills needed to properly troubleshoot all the types of errors we have. Now, me being a Lemmy user, I have almost a decade of Linux experience under my belt like we all do. I tell her this as it is a very useful skill set in our line of work. She seems surprised and impressed, she wants to learn Linux. I offer if she ever wants to learn, I would be happy to show her.

A few hours of helping later, she walks up to me in the most focused expression I have seen out of her and she asks for my number and if I wanted to get together one day at a library and show her how to use Linux. I was quite startled she asked for my number because I was going to ask her the same thing later in the day. So I said sure, went to lunch dumbfounded and came back with my number on a sheet of paper.

She was very friendly to me the rest of the day. We work out a choice between Monday and Wednesday but she kept using the plural form of days implying this would keep happening.

Cut to Monday and we get together but she seems to want to work on her own thing while I do my own in proximity of each other? She ends up not being able to do her thing for some reason and so we just chat for the next few hours. It was a great chat, some of the most fun I have had in a while. However, she clearly didn't expect to be doing that and seemed to be disappointed we couldn't work on our own things and apologized for it.

She had fun, I could see she enjoyed our talk. However, what I couldn't see was interest in me. You can sometimes tell when someone is interested by how they look at you and respond to the things you do.

The thing that bothers me is that I don't understand what her goal was. Did she use the excuse of Linux to get close to me? Did she actually only just want to learn Linux and assumed there was no other purpose to our meeting? If so, why didn't we just do that instead? Why did she want to get together to work on entirely unrelated projects? Why is she interested in doing it again?

I don't know if I am just stupid and missing something. Maybe she really only just wants to learn Linux so she can be better at her job, she is the type of person to do that. It just bothers me that I can't see much rhyme or reason in her actions. If she was entirely self motivated to learn from me only, then why not just do that? Why ask me for my number if you didn't want to do the thing you suggested in the first place? I am just so lost.

Edit: princessleiascat reminded me of something. A week prior to me meeting her, one of my coworkers was learning under her when he went to go help out. Apparently a guy came up to her while this happened and asked her out. She turned him down for the reason it would be inappropriate for her to date someone where there is this power dynamic.

My coworker told me this and that might be the nail in my coffin. However, it is also possible she just used it as an excuse to not have to deal with turning him down more harshly. I could believe both things. Hense more confusion, why make an exception to hang out with me then?

I'm pretty sick of my content addiction, like watching youtube or netflix all the time. I would rather be spending my time otherwise so figured fun things are the best to start. Do you have tips for fun things to do? Or how I could search for them?

I like making soups and porridges. I usually add salt and pepper at the beginning to add flavor. Recently, a friend gave me a bottle of soy sauce and Im experimenting with it.

What would it make more sense? to add the soy sauce with the other ingredients before the mix boils, while boiling or only to add it before serving?

Another question is: should I use salt if I use soy sauce? Apparently, this sauce has a lot of sodium.

I used to read quite a bit of news, sometimes I still try, but tbh every news site feels so hostile I have a hard time trusting it's a decent source.

I prefer tech, science(space, physics, robotics), gaming, programming, philosophy, music, computing, and just about any article that could teach me about new things, even if they aren't current! I want to learn.

The big no and really the only thing I'm totally averse to is politics. I get some things I like can cross into it, but certain political headlines can ruin my mood all day. I find when I follow political news I become an angry individual. Covid was when I stopped consuming news, because I was so stressed and angry at the world that my mental health was gone.

What I'm really looking for is thoroughly researched statement of facts, and I'm cool with there being some frosting on the cake. I just don't want someome who tells me what google is doing is the greatest thing ever because I'll have less cookie popups without telling me why I won't have them. I would prefer a source with unbiased opinions, but I know that isn't realistic, we all have them. Any one who can write an article and question themselves is a plus. I don't care if their site is a nightmare, I'll manage it with other means.

I honestly get most of my news here or from podcasts(99pi would be an ideal example of what I'd want in article form) and sometimes I would like a different source than Lemmy.

One last preference, I would prefer no drama. I don't want to know what x youtuber said to y and why they were "slammed" or why A company is putting B company out of business.

If you have a specific way of following your preferred outlet, outside of just doing it in browser, what do you do? It would be awesome to have a feed of news that I maintain myself.

Trust me, I understand I'm looking for a unicorn. Don't try and fit everything with your suggestions because the reason I'm here is that I want multiple decent sources.

Tldr: looking for a decent source(s) of non-political news, I don't mind some hyperbole but would prefer that the author can recognize their biases. Also let me know if you use atypical methods to read your news, such as a custom feed.

See title. For those who don’t know, the Mandela Effect is a phenomenon where a large group of people remember something differently than how it occurred. It’s named after Nelson Mandela because a significant number of people remembered him dying in prison in the 1980s, even though he actually passed away in 2013.

I’m curious to hear about your personal experiences with this phenomenon. Have you ever remembered an event, fact, or detail that turned out to be different from reality? What was it and how did you react when you found out your memory didn’t align with the facts? Does it happen often?

Sometimes, I open the fridge (or a cabinet) and just see some condiment (mostly hot sauce) and realize it will dictate my diet for the next month.

Like today. I opened my bachelor/nihilist fridge and saw a bottle of Walmart steak sauce. Now, I know, I guess I must eat steak inspired meals, or ground beef inspired meals, or whatever but my favorite is over easy eggs with steak sauce. Or, any sandwich. Also, boiled potatoes, because I am a genius that hates themself. Also green vegetables.

Sriracha is similar. I see it and think, "oh, you TEASE!" and then put on a pot of rice and start blanching all my veggies.

I see some local "Louisiana Hot Sauce" in my hot sauce cabinet? Looks like I'm eating pizza for a few weeks because I love the dipping options.

I'm sure this has been a big, annoying, reddit/Lemmy monstrosity of a conversation already; I just wanted to ask what anyone else was assigned to eat by the Condiment Royal Family/Lineage/deity to obey this morning.

I am planning to go to india for studies (and maybe job ) but to do that i have to pass an exam . Don't get me wrong i am not excepting to ace the test by studying under a month ( while studying a whole lot of other subjects too ) I just want to (barely) pass . And i suppose living there would require hindi aswell because most people there won't . I tried duolingo aldready and it didn't do it for me for s couple of reasons:

• They ( even i know this) spells a lot of letters wrong .

• Seems too cash graby and justifying it as a game .

• Overall i didn't like their way of teaching .

• It seems like there isn't a person behind it you know too artificial .

• And even though i selected the options for a complete noob they are expecting me to know lot of things .

Ok let's give a little bit of context. I will turn 40 yo in a couple of months and I'm a c++ software developer for more than 18 years. I enjoy to code, I enjoy to write "good" code, readable and so.

However since a few months, I become really afraid of the future of the job I like with the progress of artificial intelligence. Very often I don't sleep at night because of this.

I fear that my job, while not completely disappearing, become a very boring job consisting in debugging code generated automatically, or that the job disappear.

For now, I'm not using AI, I have a few colleagues that do it but I do not want to because one, it remove a part of the coding I like and two I have the feeling that using it is cutting the branch I'm sit on, if you see what I mean. I fear that in a near future, ppl not using it will be fired because seen by the management as less productive...

Am I the only one feeling this way? I have the feeling all tech people are enthusiastic about AI.

It seems like if what you're showing is what you understand they find appealing and fun, then surely that's what should be in the game. You give them that.

But instead, you give them something else that is unrelated to what they've seen on the ad? A gem matching candy crush clone they've seen a thousand times?

How is that model working? How is that holding up as a marketing technique???
