When they say that "they have an army of lawyers" or that Disney has more lawyers than animators and things like that, do they tho? Is an army of lawyers really effective? Do companies actually have an "army" of lawyers to redact and sign documents?

Are there currently any Substack replacements that integrate with ActivityPub?

So I'm currently looking for a Substack substitute for taking donations.

I'd want it to feature a blog (and preferably newsletters too) that include a mix of publicly-accessible posts, as well as posts that are only visible to donors.

And ideally, I want it to also integrate with ActivityPub too.

That might mean a Fediverse post is automatically generated when a new blog post is published. Or potentially the publicly visible blog posts are published in full to the Fediverse.

Now, I know there are a few donations platforms that can handle the first part, such as Ghost and Ko-Fi.

There are also blogging platforms such as WriteFreely/Write.as and Micro.blog that integrate with the Fedi.

And in theory you could do both with a WordPress blog and number of plugins, some paid. But especially with paid plugins, that's likely to get quite expensive quickly. (Not to mention some of the questionable things that have happened at Automattic in recent weeks.)

But are there any platforms out there that support both?

Or is the best option at this stage just to get a Ko-Fi/Ghost account for the donations and donor-only posts, with a separate micro.blog or write.as account for the publicly accessible posts?

I've always held the belief that music wasn't better in the past, people just have survivorship bias. What are your genuine favorite albums of the last few years?

Hey all! I'm wondering if someone can help me pick between these two apps. They seem to be the most commonly recommended Android front-ends for OpenStreetMaps, but I'm wondering what the pros/cons/differences are. Thanks in advance!

12 Years ago I had a Sony Vaio. I quite liked it. Then in my next job, 2017 or so, I went for a Toshiba Portege, and absolutely loved it.

Guess what the above two have in common? Yup, they stopped making laptops for the professional market. So now I'm a bit at a loss. Any recommendations?

Requirements:

• Lightweight and easy to carry around.
• 13-15" display, preferably
• Decent battery life
• It absolutely must have an RJ45
• Works well with linux
• Good keyboard quality
• ISO keyboard availability
• Touchpad. Bonus points if it has the touchpad buttons ABOVE the pad itself.

Trying to set this up for some healthcare stuff I want to keep private. Finding this to be very difficult, mostly because I can't find anonymous, secure email.

I feel like every two years I need to call my carrier and complain if I want a decent deal. They will do things like upgrade my plan on their website to have 10 extra gigabytes of data but won't upgrade me to it until I contact them. There's also all the new member exclusive deals that I feel make it impractical to just sit on one plan for an extended period of time.

This could be something that you bought for a higher price than what most people would guess based on the item, or it could be something you bought for a normal price that has gained significant value as time has gone on.

What made me think of this question is a LEGO minifigure I got with my "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" disc. It is Bilbo Baggins in a blue coat that was apparently only sold in that movie box only at Target stores. Even considering the exclusivity, I would have guessed maybe $10-20 for such a tiny piece of plastic, but there are sold listings on eBay from $80 to $225. I could possibly even get towards the higher end of that number since I still have everything in the original box in good condition. It's not worth a ton compared to some other items people may own, but I think most people would not expect nearly that amount.

Extras/other people in the background are acceptable to meet the criteria but ideally with no human/entity on the screen at all that isn't played by the same actor.

Movies like 'Men', 'Moon' or 'The Nutty Professor' don't meet this criteria for example, due to the exceptions of characters played by other actors.

And it has to be somewhat mainstream and not a low budget student film or something.

Edit: I also meant that they play multiple characters...

This year, i'm on my 8th (final) semester of uni and im dealing with working on my undergrad thesis (it's about open source and how companies monetize free software). I dont know where im going after this. Back in 2023 i was in 12 months of grueling low paying internship with 4 hours of commute but at least that was something because i bought a lot of stuff from HDD, games, and shirt. Sadly it wasnt enough to cover for rent so i commuted 4 hours a day I hate being stuck in my parents house, and worse, because im busy with my thesis + preparing for quiz, i dont know how to make money or if it's wise to get a job when i still have classes in my schedule. For the thesis itself, it's due around 20th June and right now i have 20 pages. Im aiming to get 70-75 pages by then. I also have to see my advisor 10 times this semester. What can i do about my life? Give me some insights so i don't hate myself too much for being so broke and caught up with everything else. All my interests are pretty much narrative gamedev and cyber sec, and it's hard to make money with it.

I always thought of it like this: if a workplace makes you feel devalued or is toxic (gaslighting and ranting about you behind your back), you quietly find new pastures.

Now, however, I think this is the wrong approach: why do I have to accept they bully me? I should defend myself. And doesn't the manager have to make sure a workplace ain't toxic? Instead of quietly looking for a new job next time this happens, wouldn't it be better to confront, document and escalate instead of letting it go? even if HR only exists to protect the company and not me.

If HR and manager do nothing to address the problem, wouldn't it be a better strategy to start working the least possible and let the company fire me, while looking for another job?

I personally don't believe that I anyone else has a soul. From my standup I don't se any reason to believe that our consciousness and our so called "soul" would be any more then something our brain is making up.

I live in iran, and i see this all the time

So far I think "Uptown Funk", "Blinding Lights", and "Old Town Road". That doesn't mean I love those songs. It means I think they answer the question. I know you may love "Irony x3" by Zigbones. But they ain't it.

Edit: I'm sorry for the poorly worded question. I think it's autism related, but I don't see possibilities or alternative understandings easily, and when I wrote "decade" I thought 10 years and that was it.

Of course anyone answering from the perspective of 2010-2020 was making a perfectly reasonable and rational answer and I was very dismissive. I'm really sorry for that.
