I have a bookstack instance self-hosted and I quick like the program and workflow. I like having 'books' of information to separate/organize my information. It feels very much like folder heirarchy to me, and while that has its issues, I prefer it. Being able to add tags to pages helps alleviate some of those issues and helps with a broad search for an idea when I don't know where it is stored down the line. Here is a quick view of my bookstack. It's nothing fancy, but a visual to see what I'm talking about.

It’s great software. But I am very fond of software designed to be readable in 100 years. Meaning that the file does not require the program to be read. Text files (.txt, .rtf, .odt) are formats that are designed to be read in the future without MS Word, or Notepad; .doc, .docx, etc without microsoft might not be readable in 100 years without having MS software. That is why I like taking notes with markdown and why I like software like QownNotes, obsidian, and logsec which produce files that are readable without the program. So if they crash and burn, I don’t lose my data. With Bookstack, I cannot view that data without bookstack. And if I wanted to move my documents to a different software, I cannot export everything. I can export page-by-page but that’s only reasonble on a small scale. So, while I like the program, I would like to move to another program for my wiki/personal knowledge base.

For those wondering why I am worried about this: I've run into many walls with software problems in my life:

1. software I use being abandoned
2. new terms of service I don not agree with blocking me from using the program I like
3. price hikes for software I use that are not worth it but I'm vendor locked and so I have to either pay or go the tedious route of moving my data slowly over because there is no export possibilities. 4)I am using a new device and I can't access or view my data because the software doesn't work on the device, hasn't been ported over, or isn't usable on the novel form factor of the device.

My worries with bookstack flow from there. It may be a good program, but what if my needs change, can I move my data easily?

In my search, Tiddlywiki was a standout in this view because it is a quine. It contains all its code to run/display itself (it’s a quine). So in 100 years, you should be able to open a tiddlywiki and it will contain be able to be read. However, I am having a hard time adapting to tiddlywiki’s way of doing things. Far less user friendly than Bookstack in ease of use. Thus I am writing this post to see if anyone else has ideas. Is there a way to make tiddlywiki look/work more like Bookstack in the book→pages (or folder→files) workflow? Or do you know of another piece of software for a knowledge base that meets the ideas above?

I would like to know of a community where I can post things that I write to myself. I’m not capable enough to make my own community yet, and I’ve got a lot to say.

My question, though, is about learning. What’s your single most essential defining piece of advice, to share the love of learning? To make someone who isn’t interested, interested?

Other than necessity, I guess. I hope that doesn’t just answer the question.

Are there Linux Youtubers whose content is targeted not necessarily for those who are deeply interested in linux (even at beginner level) and foss's news, but for those who use linux for daily basis, like for viewer's study or their work?

LIke for example how to use LibreOffice / OpenOffice as Office's suite alternatives, or how to use those networking software you learn on high school but on linux (or linux alternaives), how to game on linux, and they don't use Window Manager but instead use Desktop Environment for the sake of familiarity.

I might be missing out on some people but if there isn't one that already did this type of content I want to consider being that youtuber myself

I'm currently in the process of writing a song. I've got a tune and I'm putting the lyrics together but I'm always concerned that any tune I think of might just be another song I've heard somewhere randomly that I don't remember hearing.

Do I just have a shitty memory or is this a problem that other people have too?

Couple of things for me.

One is tiny croutons. I don't see them anywhere anymore. They taste the same but it's kind of a pain sometimes to keep the big ones on your fork. The small ones were a little more satisfying to snack on too.

Second is Blue Nehi. Never met anyone else that's tried or heard of it. Damn it was good though. Big Blue is kinda similar but those always taste under carbonated.

My cat needed to be euthanised last month, and I just received her ashes. They came with a round black sticker. What’s the purpose of this sticker?

They mentioned my chosen urn was suitable for sprinkling cremains (I don’t plan to do that) – maybe it’s related to that?

It's kind of silly, but I still really dig the idea behind torrenting and peer to peer sharing of data. It's cool to think about any old computer helping pass along some odd bits & bytes of data, whether a goofy drawing or strange story.

Do you feel you have outgrown media sources or discontinued them for other reasons?

Its pretty much in the title. In university I really didn't pay attention in our Ethics class because it focused on patents and Therac-25 studies, and I feel like with the way things are going as a software developer, we should have a clearer understanding of the philosophy and impact of ethical ramifications besides "AI bad," and I saw this as someone who sees Generative AI as very bad. So I've realized that in conversations I'll use traditional terms for men as general terms for all genders, both singularly and for groups. I always mean it well, but I've been thinking that it's not as inclusive to women/trans people.

For example I would say:

"What's up guys?" "How's it going man?" "Good job, my dude!” etc.

Replacing these terms with person, people, etc sounds awkward. Y'all works but sounds very southern US (nowhere near where I am located) so it sounds out of place.

So what are some better options?

The simplest approach is to just drop the usage of guys, man, etc. Folks for groups and mate for singular appeal to me when I do want to add one in between friends.

TL;DR: My current workplace is super toxic (the company has been described as modern slavery) and I'm looking for advice/insights on getting out ASAP.

Background

Last September my 12-month contract came to an end without any chance of renewal. It was unfortunate but I understood the risk when I took the position. My previous roles included working as a content moderator and eventually moving my way up to being an expert in the area as well as supporting a small team. This was all through a vendor. The job was good but I needed something more stimulating and working in the content moderation field for very long is not great for your mental health.

Around the middle of last year, I got really into videography and have been trying to grow that side hustle since. It's gained some more traction this month but it's not enough to leave my 9-5 yet.

Current Job/Role

After about a month and a half of being without work, I got into my current role via a referral from an ex-coworker. The role wasn't exactly what I was looking for but I took it because I had bills that I needed to pay. I couldn't survive on just my partner's part-time pay.

I joined the team as a Senior AI Data Trainer. On paper, the work seemed similar to the work I'd done at LinkedIn. That's about where the similarities stop.

Our job is to essentially help train and correct AI models that have received negative feedback from the user. We will evaluate the conversation, critique the response (four in total) and then provide an ideal response. The work isn't very difficult, it's just mind-numbing. We also have some crazy KPIs to achieve.

Initially, management and the company seemed great. Everyone was super helpful and friendly, but after a couple of months (present-day), their true colours have started to shine through. I've been on my current project for three weeks but I'm expected to be achieving the same as someone who has been working on it for months. There is a ton of micromanagement going on.

For example, I had management complain to me today about my AHT because I had one bad day and it was higher than usual. Never mind the fact that the overall trend from the last three weeks has been trending down. When I mentioned this, the response was "Okay..." and then the subject was changed to some other "issue".

Details about the company

We use an app called Hubstaff to track our time. Normally you can see your hourly rate there but they have turned that feature off and only use it for time and activity tracking. We need to use our personal machines for work and need this installed on it. The app will periodically take screenshots of any and all screens. It will also keep track of the websites you visit.

The company is 100% remote but is registered in the US. They send us our pay twice monthly via Wise, so my "payslip" is an email from Wise saying I received a transfer. Since I'm based in Europe the pay gets converted into Euros.

I am paid $15.50 (€14.28) an hour. While management gets $100k + $20k bonus. AI Data Trainers don't have any benefits at all. Management was recently on a trip to the Dominican Republic (paid for by the company), just because they could.

Conclusion

It has been very draining working here. I'm grateful that I got a job and that I can pay for my bills but I can't be here for much longer. I've been applying for jobs on LinkedIn but haven't had any luck yet. I'd love some advice on getting out and into a new role or if anyone has had a similar experience, what did you do?

I sent an email to a recruiter that helped a friend previously so hopefully I can get something from that. I have also been messaging friends and coworkers to try to get referrals.

It’s just really draining working here. I’m super unhappy and need to get out but I haven’t heard back from any of the applications I’ve sent.
