New to mastodon, never used Twitter, refuse to use Xitter. Any tips and who and what to follow? And who and what do you follow?

Edit: thank you all for your responses! I’ll definitely check out the accounts you suggested! Looking through hashtags I like and popular ones sounds like a great addition!

I always feel awkward when asked my favorite color, song, or any other type of trivial question. I have my standard responses I remain consistent with over time, but they are only consistent lies. Are those types of questions fundamentally awkward to you too?

I like things that look nice. I may lean toward one color or another at times, but I would never seek out the color before or to the exclusion of something that looks nice. It feels like color prejudice or something to say I have a favorite. I'm open minded to all colors in any situation more like an artistic mind I guess. That is the kind of thought process I go through when I'm asked to pick my favorite (x). I want to respond with the equally vague questions of when and what circumstances.

Some may call it over thinking, but what use is there in saying you have a favorite when in reality it is more complicated. Like, is that favorite song playing at a wedding, a house party, and a funeral. Or, are all your clothes your favorite color.

What do you think a person's response to such questions says about them, their depth, curiosity, and open mindedness?

I am trying to move away from spotify but am really stuck. Ytm has opensource mobile apps that can directly use ytm and its recommendations but spotify doesn't have any decent option, but i like the recommendations more in spotify.

Ytm is very much connected to youtube it has videos and audio mixed up, its so bad. Also it needs to enable youtube history in order to save history of songs. I only consider it bcz of mobile apps solutions.

Spotify is what i really want to use but it doesn't have foss app. But atleast it just records music and not get connected everywhere. Only downside is that i would be using propriety app which may have more trackers.

It comes does to which one to trust spotify or Google

What do you say?

Looking specifically for men but I’m open to all opinions. I’ve been doing some experimenting over the last 2 and a bit years, trying to find what works best for me. I’d love to get some opinions on what has worked for others.

stuff I’ve tried:

  • L'Oréal Men Expert (no complaints)
  • Bull Dog (not the biggest fan)
  • Neutrogena (no complaints either)
  • SkinCeuticals (borrowed from my partner who got some as a gift)

I’m in Europe if it helps

Or what has been your go to lately? I'm usually a whiskey and ginger kinda guy but I'm trying to branch out a little these days. What're you drinking?

Currently sipping on a Paloma:

  • 1.5 oz Tequila (blanco)
  • .5oz lime juice
  • 4 oz Grapefruit soda (Jarritos today)
  • Pinch of salt

EDIT : !loneliness@lemmy.today has been created . The /c/ will also work as suicide watch. It was @wesker@lemmy.world 's idea to change the /c/ to include lonely people more .

I have been wondering why lemmy has nothing that is active and modded (which is bad for a /c/ like that ) . But i don't wanna have any fall back from the law as i am quite brock atm so is there any such risk ? I am proposing this idea and will only carry on according to what majority thinks .

EDIT: Edited a bit which may have been misleading and because one user draw my attention it do reread if you have read the post before so you don't get any wrong idea.

All I can find online are tutorials for how to make one, which is fine, but I also want to actually read and curate as well. Any suggestions?

This article says that NASA uses 15 digits after the decimal point, which I'm counting as 16 in total, since that's how we count significant digits in scientific notation. If you round pi to 3, that's one significant digit, and if you round it to 1, that's zero digits.

I know that 22/7 is an extremely good approximation for pi, since it's written with 3 digits, but is accurate to almost 4 digits. Another good one is √10, which is accurate to a little over 2 digits.

I've heard that 'field engineers' used to use these approximations to save time when doing math by hand. But what field, exactly? Can anyone give examples of fields that use fewer than 16 digits? In the spirit of something like xkcd: Purity, could you rank different sciences by how many digits of pi they require?

My reading has found things like generic phishing becoming more like spearfishing and blue teams finding preexisting problems using AI. Have there been any zero days? Do you think quantum computing will have a more significant impact on security than AI? Relatively speaking, how significant a role does good personal security practices like password management play relative to these two?

Hiya!

This is probably more simple than what I'm making into, but I want to be sure, so here we go:

Currently in the market for a good HDMI cable, however, I am curious as to what I need to know (as I know nothing about these cables) before buying one. So my use case for this scenario is a 3M long HDMI cable that will connect my desktop(Nobara or Bazzite) to my TV (that has Nvidia Shield). This is for easy access to couch gaming. My desktop has a RX 6700 XT card, but unsure about the specifications of the TV other than it being a 70inch one (can try to find this if its relevant), but I am not looking to stream 4k. So let me know what kinda specs/details i need to look for in a HDMI cable for this :)))

PS. I tried setting up Sunlight + Moonlight, but honestly seemed like a bit too much configuration for my liking, but might give it a go again later on. I've also only got access to medium-speed Wifi atm, so this isn't optional.

If they were just talking about Reddit, I’d assume something dodgy was going on connected with the IPO. But Quora is supposedly back from the dead too… Am I missing something glaringly obvious here?

I am not a native English speaker and I have sometimes referred to people as male and female (as that is what I have been taught) but I have received some backlash in some cases, especially for the word "female", is there some negative thought in the word which I am unaware of?

I don't know if this is the best place to ask, if it's not appropriate I have no problem to delete it ^^

So I have a couple month old OnePlus N30 phone, and one thing that drives me crazy with it is when I plug it in at night to charge, eventually it fully charges. You would think this is good, but then it decides to vibrate every 30 seconds or minute or so to tell me it's fully charged. Over and over again till it wakes me up and I unplug it. So far it's still mostly charged by the next morning but this is ridiculous - aren't you supposed to charge the phone overnight?

I tried just turning off the notification but the phone is using the system UI to notify and won't let me turn it off.

Does anyone know how to stop this?

What should I add to my '90s website?

So I'm currently toying around with NeoCities, and decided to trial it by building your classic mid '90s Geocities/Tripod/Angelfire pastiche website.

Some of the most important elements are already in place.

Tile background? Large font? Heading in bright pink with a shadow? Unusual colour choices? Random cat gifs? Under construction gif? Check! Check! Check!

In the true spirit of the '90s DIY web, some more pages (including the links page) are coming soon.

(I'm thinking of adding a page dedicated to either Britney or a nu-metal band.)

You can see the page so far here: https://that90ssite.neocities.org/

There are a few things that I want to add to make it complete, and I'm looking for suggestions.

The first, is to embed a midi file that plays automatically. Any suggestions on the best way of doing this?

Second, it's just not going to be complete without a guestbook.

Third, any webring suggestions?

Fourth, what's the best way of adding a java chat room in 2024?

Finally, anything else that really needs to be a part of a great '90s website?

UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! I've added more annoying GIFs, a guestbook, a links page, and a cyber cat hangout.

UPDATE 2: And added even more gifs, an amazing Amiga demo, and a ton of links.

I follow a lot of subjects and diverse interests but occasionally I catch myself staring at something I thought I knew and realize I'm not quite there.

Like I managed to get Flash Forth running on a microcontroller and a few basics beyond flashing a LED, but never figured out branching and looping in a way that clicks in my mind.

Or, how I follow a ton of science content from various sources, but feel like an idiot trying to talk about it with anyone IRL.

Does anyone else feel a disconnect from something like a digital mind versus analog life?
