I live in Europe but sometimes shop at Asian supermarkets here. One of the things I notice with almost everything I buy there is that plastic packaging feels a lot thicker than that on European products. Is there a rational reason for this? Are plastics simply cheaper? Or do people worry more that products might spoil? Are these different types of plastics?

Who doesn't know the feeling? Something brings back the memory of a song you haven't heard since 2009. Back then it was playing on TV all the time. You look it up on YouTube. It totally has those 2000s vibes. All the comments are also "omgz I just remembered this song after 15 years !!".

What even is the name for this phenomenon? Is there a community to share this stuff?

This happens in Germany.

Work culture doesn't fit my personality: I don't talk much, I keep to myself, I simply want to do my job and go home, I separate my personal life from work, my colleagues are full fledged gossips, ignore the duties that need to be done and then expect me to help them when they are late. I don't have patience for that crap anymore.

Due to internal regulations, I have to stay on the unit for 4 weeks after sending my notice. Answering honestly the question of why I'm quitting would ensure that they yell at me and bully me, and I don't want to experience that again. Even saying 'it's none of your business' ensures that they feel insulted and start yelling. I have decided I don't have patience for people like that anymore.

So, what do I say?

From news, to shitposting, to memes, to more shitposting, Lemmy feels vibrant, active, lighthearted, fun and even powerful. Mastodon feels like a fucking funeral.

I love ratchet straps, but I can't seem to find any extra-short ones. I have two anchor points about 6-8 inches apart that have a slight obstruction between them (so not a straight line).

Ideally I would find some ratchets with a compact hook profile, and extra short portion of strap between the hook and ratchet. But also perhaps some kind of hook on a threaded rod and a coupling system that allows for slight bends?

It needs to be a removable solution, but it doesn't have to be quick or easy to remove. In fact a lockable or tool-neccesary solution would be slightly ideal.

Any ideas?

Edit: I'm trying to clamp a camper shell to a truck bed. I'd like to keep the bed liner, which means I can't use use the bed rails w/o cutting 4 holes into the liner. This leaves the 4 bed anchor points on each corner. Based off current responses, I'm probably looking at some rope system.

I remember finding them on the Internet somewhere in the early 2000s. I remember that Kimi was one of them, so it would have to have been after the second movie (Rugrats in Paris). Anybody remember these things? I can't find any details about them online.

There doesn’t seem to be a very active filmmaking community on Lemmy, so I thought I’d ask here.

I’ve been using Artlist.io for almost a year now but I’ve started being less and less impressed with the music. A lot of it feels the same or leans too much into the corporate genre.

I’m looking for recommendations before I renew my subscription. Audiio seems like it could be a good deal? Musicbed also seems great but a little more expensive than I’d like at the moment.

Any other recommendations that I should look at?

Maybe separate all shipping items to cost them more? I’m not seeing many options other than cancellation

Just googled to see if there was an activitypub git host yet and came across this claiming gitlab are working on it at the moment and that it's available as an experimental feature

Seems odd to me that people aren't talking about this more here, has anyone tried it and if so is it any good?

I just joined Lemmy and so far I'm enjoying it. It's a little bit sparse in terms of content and users, but I think it has a really cool structure, and it feels more human than certain other social media sites.

I'm curious to know what users think about who is welcome here. Do you think it should be gates open, everyone including your aunt should join, or is it more exclusive to people interested in the fediverse as a starting point? Or something else?

Not trying to stir up shit, just genuinely curious about what the vibe is and where the community thinks it is or should be going.

I have a Lenovo B50 Laptop but I can't use it because when I'm using it, it shuts down randomly. I thought it was a battery problem and I've changed it but it didn't work.

I've tried to install Lubuntu on it thinking that it was a Windows problem, but nothing. While I'm using it (Internet, Libreoffice, etc.) it shuts down randomly.

What else can I do? There is any tool that I can use to search the problem?

My feed is filled with bad news, which is my fault for using the fediverse as a news feed, but it made me wonder: Which organisations, groups or individual people in the world are doing the most good for our world? I'm particularly interested in those who manage to do good on a larger impact scale (quantity or quality), but if the unknown person on your street who fosters kittens is a great example, I'd love to hear about them too.

So my workplace is mostly iPhone users and someone asked me what kind of antivirus software I used on my Android, and I said "none" and he flipped out about how unsafe it was. Other people chimed in saying how all androids need antivirus apps and I've never heard of such a thing. I do have ad-blockers and a VPN but never downloaded an antivirus. Should I? If so, what would you recommend? Thanks lemmings, love you.

My journey with Lemmy started in 2022 out of interest in the fediverse and paranoia around how much control social media companies have, and how little choice common people are left with over the Internet.

Lemmy was much smaller back then. I really wanted it go get bigger, and tried to contribute to it. But it was small enough to be unsatisfying, so I would go back and forth between lemmy and Reddit.

After the Reddit fiasco, I shifted more and more towards lemmy and less towards Reddit. I finally abandoned Reddit when third party apps broke. I only go there for specific questions in communities that aren't active on lemmy.

I live in Southern California, where I'm at the end of a long chain of cities. Occasionally, the tap smells of sulfur, hardness changes, or it tastes... odd. I'm curious about the perspective of people that are directly involved and their reasoning.

When you read them as a young person you usually put yourself in the role of the protagonist or hero. For this of you who are older which character do you think most reflects you now?

For me it’s the unnamed walker who gets scapegoated as Montag by the mechanical hounds in Fahrenheit 451.
