Scenario : I am in a crowd. My eyes are closed and not allowed to touch anything.

Can I detect my SO just by smell ?

Today, I got to thinking: what are some of Lemmy’s“go to” ways of maintaining focus, or getting their focus and concentration back after becoming distracted or being pulled away by other things “demanding” attention?

I really struggled with work today. Just an overwhelming amount of outstanding projects and assignments and client deadlines. Felt stressed and that resulted in me being avoidance and procrastinating and mindlessly doing everything BUT what I needed to do to stop feeling stressed and get stuff off my plate.

When you get stuck in those types of situations, what do you find are the best strategies to “snap out of it” and get back to work or being productive?

And did you suddenly feel the need to buy a motorcycle ?

...but how would I have been exposed to that music without the show?

How would I find music that I'll possibly love, but I won't be exposed to?

I was a student for many years (5 years of undergrad, 2.5 years of grad school), and I became very comfortable with always being able to look at the syllabus and my grade and know what I needed to do and how well I was performing. Work isn’t like that. Like I think is normal, I get a performance review once a year. I find this unsettling, because even though I come in and do decent work, I still often feel like I’m doing something “wrong” and worry that I’m secretly on the cusp of being fired. Folks who have maybe been working for longer than I have, how do you feel and stay confident in your work?

I would like to know if there is an "official" way to set an account as disabled. For now, I am plan on posting this on Asklemmy, changing my password to some random string that I won't remember, and then logging out. If I'd like to come back later, there's a chance of my account being revived through the "forgot password" process.

I am leaving Lemmy for good. I have spent a few months here, and the first few months were nice and positive. But now it feels much more Reddit-like. Most active communication here is happening at posts that I find negative. All this negative stuff is detoriating my mental health. I'd instead prefer to stay happy and remain ignorant until I personally experience the issues being raised here. 

Of course, a lot of people will disagree with this approach, and they are likely already coming up with comments to post on this thread that I'd find rude and thus negative. But I've seriously had enough of it.

I have a heavily filtered Reddit with a home page filled with people like me. The communities they are part of either don't exist on Lemmy or are not sufficiently active. I will be active with these people until the old Reddit front-end reaches EoL. Please prefer to answer the first paragraph over the rest.

PS: please don't judge me by my comments on my profile. I am a teenager and my personality is still maturing. I cringe at most things I do the next day after doing them.

I know I know, we don’t like politics here much but I’ve been wondering if there are any good resources to learn about it. I think it’s important for being part of the society, no?

I saw Ground News, and though it seems interesting, I don’t know what right leaning left leaning centre means and what to watch out for.

I don’t want to be an expert, but I’d appreciate to know the basics so I know what’s going on around me. Can I learn about it in general or is it per country thing I don’t know.

Looking for something like that. Episodic use of a videogame for some light-hearted story driven cinema.

The only good modern example I can think of is Neebs Gaming's Subnautica series, but that's kind of an outlier in their channel since everything else they've done (that I've seen at least) is more of a "let's play" type of video than the kind of cinematic roleplay they do for Subnautica.

Hard to screen for quality on channels I'm not familiar with, since 99% of YouTube's gaming content is hot garbage.

Anywho, the combination of school and work is melting my brain... I don't trust my time management skills to dive back into actual gaming, but the occaisional episode to get that little half-hour-mind-vacation would be a godsend.

the colleague in question feels that only her way of doing things is the right one and expects me to adapt to her way of thinking and her logic. This is tiring and burdensome because I have to force me to stop doing things automatically and efficiently, but think how she wants it done and do it her way. I work worse when this happens.

There are several ways to reach the same goal and I always adapt according to the situation at hand. I do what feels logic at the time and work my way.

I already told the charge nurse charge about it but I don't know if she had a conversation with this coworker and what was said.

I feel you believe you are my boss. You are not. Stop telling me how to work. It's tiring. You have your way of doing things, I've got mine, both equally good. Should you have a problem with this, contact the charge or manager. I'm gonna go work now.

I've seen them called "Stop Lines", "Balk Line", etc. The thick line painted on the road at a Stop Sign.

You're supposed to stop before the line, but a lot of the time there's a bush or other obstruction so you can't see any crossing traffic. You have to creep forward until you can see anything.

Is there a reason for this? Is it done on purpose? It makes sense if there's a crosswalk or something, but I see it a lot where there shouldn't be any pedestrian activity.

I'm looking for recommendations for an Android app to track and report GPS-type data (if such an app exists). Specifically, I'm hoping to be able to extract stops, origin/destination, roads/route traveled, and speed information.

Two use cases:

1. Friend does an ad-hoc delivery service where requests are phoned in when they're needed rather than scheduled ahead of time. The ability to see where they started, where they went, and what roads/distance they traveled as they scurry about all day without having to enter it all manually into a map program later on would be invaluable to calculating expenses.
2. Same friend was pulled over, while I was also in the vehicle, for speeding but was definitely not exceeding the speed limit. I would've loved to be able to pull up some GPS data that said what speed we were going at the time on the road in question.

I don't think that we're in a simulation, but I do find myself occasionally entertaining the idea of it.

I think it would be kinda funny, because I have seen so much ridiculous shit in my life, that the idea that all those ridiculous things were simulated inside a computer or that maybe an external player did those things that I witnessed, is just too weird and funny at the same time lol.

Also, I play Civilizations VI and I occasionally wonder 'What if those settlers / soldiers / units / whatever are actually conscious. What if those lines of code actually think that they're alive?'. In that case, they are in a simulation. The same could apply to other life simulators, such as the Sims 4.

I've been fighting off writing this for a while now. I even considered making a throwaway for it, but I guess if its too embarrassing I can delete it.

I've sorta come to accept I'm bi in recent years, and I am wondering how I should go about dating and courtship in regards to dating within my same sex (male). Especially since I find femininity to be a key attraction point. I also haven't dated or had sex in like, three years or more. Its been a while, I kinda stopped caring for myself and focused on work, I am slowly trying to become an interesting person again, get back in shape but its hard. I dunno, man. I'm in my mid-30s and I am trying to figure out what I want out of the world. There's a bit of lust involved. And I definitely need a hug at the very least.

Furthermore, I live in the Southern part of the US, and the amount of trans hate has me actively wanting out of here (I'm aiming for Colorado) and dating in this part of the Southeast is already difficult as is, in my prior experiences.

How does one navigate this kind of world after coming out? How do I deal with the stigma especially since in the states, there's a renewed interest in putting people back in the closet?

I have a docker image that you can run with:

docker compose -f compose_10f.yml up

The compose_10f.yml looks like this:

services:
  setup:
    image: tenfingers_10f:v1
    volumes:
      - ./:/data
    working_dir: /data/

Which makes the image believe it runs in ./ so if it saves "./hello" it will be saved in the folder where it's launched (it works).

The thing is, it's a command line program (named 10f.py), not a server or such, so I'd like to run it like this:

docker run -v ./:/data -w /data/ tenfingers_10f:v1 10f.py

And it works with the exception it doesn't get to run in the mounted ./ folder.

It confuses the "mount" (or I'm just lucky the compose file works?) and it believes it lives in /data/, not in ./

python3: can't open file '/data/10f.py': [Errno 2] No such file or directory

I did struggle to set this up in the compose file, but I'd like to make the images run in a specific directory thinking they are in ./

Any ideas how I can figure this out?
