I'm curious what it takes to do furniture upholstery. And in a completely different scope, what it takes to sew Lycra in clothing like cycling bib shorts.

I mean the secret to doing it right.

For instance, if you want to paint cars, I can tell you all kinds of levels, but the secret sauce is sticking to a single paint system from primers to clear, 3m imperial sandpaper used wet with a drop of dish soap, block sanding with guide coats, degreaser for reflections tests, a reliable air drying system for compressed air using an oilless compressor and very large tank, a full set of Sata spray guns, the best pneumatic DA sander your paint jobber sells. Then you'll also need a variable speed buffer, fresh cut/medium/finish pads, 3m Perfect-it 2 and whatever fine finisher they sell now that does not contain oil fillers. Tape, paper, all all that is a given. Perfect automotive class paint is 99.9% prep and sanding, and only 0.1% painting. The number one rule is: when you think you should be done, step away for a break, when you get back acknowledge that you are only halfway done and get back to work. Your emotional state is irrelevant; the only truth that matters is in sanding guide coats and degreaser reflection tests.

All that said, with all of my experience, I can mix paint systems to get cheaper combinations between systems, I can spray with a $20 harbor freight gun, and polish with a sock and toothpaste in a zombie apocalypse pinch.

Does anyone here know sewing on this level? In a (coco) nutshell, what are the machines and standards to do it right?

I'm referring to projects like redlib or invidious.

I was thinking about doing something similar for a local second-hand marketplace and got curious. Redlib seems to use token spoofing to get past rate limits and Invidious doesn't even use the official YouTube API.

The only way I thought of, which would be slow, is to scrape the site (like you would with Beautiful Soup).

I still get tons of political calls, texts, and emails from donations I made around 2016 and 2020. Is there any organization I can use to donate money that won't harass me in the future or sell my data to someone else who will?

(I got a text soliciting a political donation while I was typing this question!)

every once and a while, my city turns up the chlorine as part of some annual flush or cleaning or whatever.

anyway, the water coming out of my pipes is the exact same temperature as it always was, but for some reason it seems warm when I taste it. it doesn't matter how long I let it run, it's just the same on my tongue. I'm filtering it, I can't even taste the chlorine, but it just feels tepid at all times

Is there some advantage in having employees just doing nothing? I got an offer in early june, got paid for training and induction, got the uniform, and then, radio silence.

I chased them up on the phone three times and today, when I called yet again they asked me to send them an email at a specific address. It's been over a month after I got the training btw.

I realise I need to look for new job obviously as these idiots are pulling my leg. But can someone explain why would they bother with recruitment if they don't need staff?

As far as I can tell, different faces, but same old, same old... I mean, literally anyone is better than Biden at the job, considering age...

What do dems worry about her?

It often feels like there are only 3 productive hours in typical American white collar work day.

What if we just cut out the rest?

Edit: Some great responses. So responses must have also been said about the 5 day and 40 hour work weeks.

Disclaimer: I'm in Australia and here vitamins must comply with certain regulations. Feel free to read about it: https://www.tga.gov.au/news/blog/how-are-vitamins-regulated-australia

I bought vitamin D the other day, and couldn't help but to notice the price differences, such as:

Brand A: $8 x 300 pills Brand B: $30, x 250 capsules Brand C: $40, x 300 capsules

All had the same amount of vitamin per dose (1000 u). They all had the AUST L label which means they undergo controls to ensure that they have what they claim to have, and that they are made under certain safety standards.

I also buy iron supplements but there is nowhere near this much difference between brands. The only obvious difference was the type of pill, the more expensive ones were gel capsules while the cheap ones were hard pills.

So, are gel capsules really that much better? Is the price difference justified? Are there other issues that could explain the price difference in terms of quality?

So as we all know on the news, the cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike Y2K'd it's own end customers with a shoddy non-tested update.

But how does this happen? Aren't there programming teams and check their code or pass it to a quality assurance staff to see if it bricked their own machines?

8.5 Million machines too, does that effect home users too or is it only for windows machines that have this endpoint agent installed?

Lastly, why would large firms and government institutions such as railway networks and hospitals put all their eggs in one basket? Surely chucking everything into "The Cloud (Literally just another man's tinbox)" would be disastrous?

TLDR - Confused how this titanic tits up could happen and that 8.5 Million windows machines (POS, Desktops and servers) just packed up.

After the news about FBI accesing trump shooters phone some people are speculating that they copied the phone storage so that they could bruteforce it without getting locked out if that is true is there anyway to make it so that your digital device can't be copied without the passwd if someone has physical acess to it and all the bruteforcing etc have to be done on the original device itself so we have a better chance of privacy . I am a layman but i use a good enough password on my phone and encrypt some sd card storage (which i knoe can be copied bcause i do it myself) but if the phones whole storage can be copied it seems kinda pointless . so my questions are :

1 Does new smartphones do it by default ? if so how is wiping the phone when forgetting password possible ?

2 does full disk encryption do this ?

3 Does windows (8) have any thing that could do this for micro sd card and smartphone ? (some background is i only have a windows 8 craptop and it takes ages to load and Microsoft appstore nor sideloading works now encrypting the laptop is not needed as i barely do anything on it but was thinking if i could encrypt my phone or sd card using it (it is really really slow (think can't even load MS word in an hour slow) ) if not see question 4 ) also before you ask can't install linux tried and failed.

4 beside from encrypting certain files using file manager encryption can i encrypt my sd card on android itself by using any app ? (preferably from fdroid ) .

5 is all these even possible or is our only option hoping that our passwds are too complex to be bruteforced ?

6 also many people talk about updating your OS to increasing security but what about outdated hardware ? do they posses a risk or things like USB,sd cards etc which doesn't get any update ? Do they suffer security risk as time moves on ? is that even a thing ?

Try to answer questions in these format . pardon my ignorance and grammer even if i delete my acc feel free to still comment so it can be useful to others and i may still drop in to see the answers .

Can anything be worth doing? (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

Definitely a "woah bruh 420 blaze it" kind of thought this eve, but I'm wondering if there is a philosophy, lifestyle, or technique that addresses this:

I often wish for some way of making anything worth doing, therefore removing the need to judge whether something is worth doing.

Many hours of my "free time" outside of work are a struggle of meta-evaluation re: "time investment" and feel it would be so much more peaceful to outgrow this mindset

Edit: Thank you all for sharing your thoughts and advice. Seeing both simple truths and nuanced anecdotes makes for wonderful reading, and I'm glad I put this question out there ✨

I think bad decisions influence him cause he was younger than me. It makes me want to know what happened in his life he was able to buy an AR-15 at 22 I think. He had a good life going and it's like no he tried to shoot Trump and I wonder why? I don't see how you can just hate someone that much to also end your life over.

What brands do you avoid at all cost? I don't keep up with the news all that much, and many of the reasons to avoid something don't make it there anyway. So I'm asking here to make a big list of things to avoid. It could be anything from bad security practices to really frustrating packaging. Working as a cashier myself, I definitely know there are plenty of brands I avoid purely on the basis that their product is a pain to stock.

On the flip side, what's the alternative? If you avoid Pepsi, for example, what do you turn to instead?

So I am writing a thesis and what I thought that meant is making some cool programming project and then basically explaining what you did, how you did it and why. But today I hear that I am supposed to do things like """research""" and """literature review""". Apparently one is supposed to find similar pieces of """research""" and build on top of it. This doesn't sound good bros. I have the thing entirely completed, minus a few grammatical errors on the document itself. What do I do?

If you read my history you'll know I'm a nurse applying for a position that's gonna mean less money but also less physical job, stable sleeping patterns and your regular 5 day workweek.

today I said goodbye to a group of coworkers I like working with. I was discreet about the new job, but I'm gonna miss working with them.

It makes me don't want to quit.

If you were ever here, how did you solve this?

I probably donated 10 years of idle CPU time between 2005 to 2015.

I just want to kill some time, I like simple arcade style games that aren't using scummy corporate sales tactics to get me to play every day

After I'd read that the Trump shooter had looked at photos of Trump and Biden and their upcoming speech locations and the fact that the shooter was a lone wolf and bullied at school, I read part of the Wikipedia page about the Uvalde shooting . The Uvalde shooter also was a lone wolf and also used an AR-15. My thoughts right now are like this :

  • The lone wolfs probably have suffered badly from an inferior complex due to bullying and alienation
and wanted to do something which made them feel historically "significant" instead of feeling completely"useless".

  • The US appears to have a pretty dominant machismo culture (Think about GOP with their MAGA, it is humiliating for women and minority groups) and so-called snowflakes are looked down upon. This is very bad for everyone involved.

  • Cops are afraid of citizens having an AR-15 on them.

What can be done ?

  • Should vote with our wallets ? Like stop using exTwitter now that Elon Musk has publicly shown support for Trump ? (On Mastodon I've seen many comments about people that did cancel their subscription to the New York Times and that seemed to have some effect. Finally the NYT is posting more critical articles about Trump and Project 2025.)

  • Should people talk more often to each other and avoid alienation ? In books of Gabor Maté he talks about the fact that most people in society look down on hard drug addicts but these junkies are still human beings. And the same goes for homeless people and refugees of course. They are still human beings. No need to automatically view them as inferior beings, right ?

  • Should we limit our screen time on mobile phones ? Are we silently producing a sort of zombies that cannot think for themselves anymore ? Should tech companies be obliged to make phone apps less addictive ?

  • Should mobile phone usage during class in school be forbidden ?

  • Should we promote exchange projects as part of cultural improvement ? Like say 50 people from Congo Republic in Africa swap places with 50 people from California for 1 year, and then after swapping back talk about the experiences.

  • Should we in our education system or during leisure time educate people more on what happened in World War II and what we can still learn from that ? For example the book by Umberto Eco about how to recognize a fascist ( Ur-Fascism ) could be used.

    • Should bullying at school be pro-actively approached and make victims and bullies talk to each other under professional supervision ?

Hey Lemmy! I'm ashamed to admit I haven't yet quit Google Docs. I think I should especially since I got a lot of documents which I really have no reason to keep online, I've been doing so out of lazyness as I'm used to GDocs and its ease of use.

I'm looking for a text editor that lets me paste images straight from my clipboard into the documents, this is a must for my workflow.

Another feature I use a lot is the side menu/index, which is created automatically when I insert a header and lets me jump quickly to any part of my document.

With that in mind, the search function is also essential, I need this to either have a search bar or work with ctl+F

Of course I need some basic color and font size variation, and having the ability to create tables is handy but I don't need any kind of math functionality.

I could use Libre Office but I'm looking for something bare bones and lightweight. I haven't used LO in years so it may have changed, however from memory it's pretty well fleshed out and I find all the extra features distracting especially since I don't need them. I'm not sure though, perhaps I'm wrong and you can convince me?

Have you got any suggestions? TIA
