I don't know why this never occurred to me before. so quarterbacks have headsets in their helmets so they can communicate with the coaching staff. I was always under the impression that they only used it before the play, just to prevent using a runner, but is the coach ever on the microphone during the play? maybe telling the quarterback where somebody is open if he can't see it

Consider me a weeb but I like Japan, it has some truly beautiful nature and cuisines to try across the country.

Yes, there is a bit of that anime or gaming side to it, they've birthed many favourite nostalgic franchises of mine like Crash Bandicoot or Pokemon.

I also really like their architecture with their traditional houses and castles, the whole thing just seems really peaceful and tranquil given it it is a "quiet and polite" country.

Their country might be set in their ways but that is what I think makes the country special, keeping its traditions, beliefs and culture for many, many years.

My bro likes Spain because of their food and hot sunny weather 😎

What about you? What country do you like and why?

When I say honor, what I mean is the idea of every individual being called to answer to everyone else. You know, the kind of thing you see from the Klingons. "You are thirty and unmarried, you bring dishonor to us" or "shame on your family for eternity because you were arrested for terrorism" or "what a disgrace you are for not having the skillset of your parents". This goes deeper than that though, sometimes it's more subtle, for example you might run into old classmates and all they want to know is how your brother is doing, or people keep telling you that you should live up to your sister or they might put you in some kind of shadow.

People who defend honor will often say "it is the masses who have spoken, enough said" but do you consider this self-explanatory and why? Because I have many questions sometimes that get no answer that seem to undermine the very justification of honor, for example... what defines a member of an honor culture, is the internet seen as a valid method of manifesting an honor culture, does an honor culture that faces a schism and breaks off from another become a dishonorable honor culture or equally valid, who was the first person to believe in certain ideas from which the honor culture got its conclusions, how did said person justify their ideas, is it dishonorable to find loopholes in the rules of the honor culture, are you dishonored if you save the life of someone who is seppukuing, what if this person happens to be the emperor, etc.

As kids, we're told only people who go to college/university for politics/economics/law are qualifiable to make/run a country. As adults, we see no nation these "qualified" adults form actually work as a nation, with all manifesto-driven governments failing. Which to me validates the ambitions of all political theorist amateurs, especially as there are higher hopes now that anything an amateur might throw at the wall can stick. Here's my favorite from a friend.

Suppose there's this site I really like, and I like the fediverse, and I think it would be awesome if they joined the fediverse, to benefit everyone involved. Is it like how it was in the Zorro movie where they vote California into the US, Zorro swipes all the voting boxes with a Z, and everyone cheers, or is it not possible for just any random schmoe site to join?

The weather has finally warmed up here and now there plenty of super annoying houseflies. They're way to fast to swat and have an annoying habit of landing on you.

I've tried Google's suggestion of water/vinegar and a bit of dish soap in a bottle, but they don't seem to go for it at all.

I'm up for trying anything, please make suggestions!

Edit: Thank you to all for your suggestions. So far I've tried the idea of spraying them with surface cleaner which appears to work well

I need a portable laptop to:

  • have a lot of online quality video calls
  • type a lot during each meeting
  • have a ton of browser tabs open
  • have a few CPU-demanding apps running at the same time

I will use this laptop as my main PC.

I'm also considering:

  • T480s
  • Carbon X1 Gen 7-8
  • Dell 7490

Alternatively, in the languages I speak:

Welche Sprachen sprechen Sie? (Deutsch/German)

¿Qué idiomas habla usted? (Español/Spanish)

Quelle langue parlez-vous? (Français/French)

EDIT: These sentences are now up to date.

I love how I can customize my PC/VPS (Linux), and I feel truly at home. I hate smartphones (iPhone and Android). I hate it how limited I am in configuring them, and it's a PITA to make sure it all syncs with my main computer.

Why isn't it much more common to just use our phones as little windows/gateways to our actual computers? Using something like VCN? Internet speeds should be fast enough?

We could even build a little interface that makes it easier to navigate?

Acceptable range of answers:

"I mix mustard with mayo"

to

"I emulsify a blend of herbs and mustard seeds and chilis in clarified butter to make and herbaceous fatty hot spread"

Bonus: what's it best on?

on most sausages, I'm putting dijon mustard, but it just doesn't hit right on these Portuguese ones. i like to eat it cold, on a baguette, or a really good sausage roll (not the UK meaning, just like a hot dog bun but for sausages)

there must be some way to add a little kick. what do you put on yours?

In 4 things white people can do to start making the fediverse less toxic for Black people (DRAFT!) and its cross-posts, quite a few people said things like "maybe racism is a problem on Mastodon, but I don't see it on Lemmy." Of course, plenty of comments in the various threads were in fact examples of racism on Lemmy, so one takeaway is that at lot of people don't see racism even when they're looking at it. And helpful commenters pointed out some of the other patterns of racism on Lemmy. ... but that wasn't really the thrust of that discussion.

So I wanted to ask more generally, what are some of the examples you've seen of racism on Lemmy? Quotes and links are great, but also feel free just to describe examples or call out more general patterns!
