(With a Linux version or at least works good with Proton) Edit: just bought disco Elysium, going to post updates in the comments when I try it tomorrow. It's on sale until tomorrow in case anyone is going to purchase it.

I might covertly edit this post for clarification, but basically my concern goes like this.

We have all seen it, we're watching a commercial for a fancy new site and at the very end they say "ask for parents' permission before joining".

We like to think the collective exists for all mankind, the final bastion of stoic cosmopolitanism and truth. But there are times when you may think "err, maybe not this person".

I have a friend who is registered for a certain service and likes it a lot, and recently got scared out of her mind because a relative of hers who has autism and doesn't understand so much as digital etiquette got banned from the same service due to getting scammed and just kept re-registering and getting re-banned over and over because this was an example of an inexperienced mind who had all the resources to break the norms, and several times the people in charge of the service thought about banning the whole family (I am in fact active in a certain community that is full of this kind of poor soul). This at one point got me thinking, how helpful it might be if we federate everything in existence, similar to Neopets services which gave you a different experience depending on your registered age group. You could have "the kids corner" or "the autism corner" or even an animal corner or robot corner or alien corner, a seeming limitless potential, fediversal accommodations to the different types of minds out there, with people not having to worry about what trouble is caused by their youngsters and whatnot because they have "the kidernet" which connects to the other "nets" and can keep them out the same way.

Does nobody think this? I personally think we should fediversify existence itself, with language and identity being one useful example.

I'm looking for something to share images and videos between small family group. We use mix of android and apple. Text messages are terrible for images and videos.

We were using telegram, now I want to see what lemmy has to offer. Thank you in advance.

I don't know why I didn't think of this earlier but here I made a Spotify collaboration list! The only rules are 1) don't remove somebody else's song and 2) don't spam-add songs.

Really didn't know how to word this. All I know is that I've been completely in love with The Shelter of My Love by Astropol. I'm looking for some more alternative, dream-like, cinematic, emotionally intense songs. Songs that make you have flashbacks of things you never experienced. Songs that make you lose yourself before the voice of the artist jolts you awake. Songs that sound like how perpetual fogs and inevitable spirals feel.

I'm not sure what to call this specific genre, either. What the hell is shoegaze, anyway?

Interviewing for a part time internship for Entry Level IT. I am a full time student Comp Sci major and wanna go into networking, servers, security, so hopefully this gets me my foot in the door. I am a terrible soft skills person and really nervous. My friends told me to print out my resume and transcripts, I will surely do that. Anybody got anything else to suggest?

Update: I got the position! I honestly didn't even prepare for it, didn't even know what the company did. The comment that talked about learning to search things up was right on, they asked me what I would do if I didn't know how to do something. I answered "looking things up, asking others, and consult documentation." The company seemed really cool and is structured pretty much like Valve Corp in that they wanted jacks of all trades and it was company owned.

Thank you for all the helpful advice. It definitely helped me out, and hopefully, it helps others out as well.

I generally try to stay informed on current events. With the exception of what gets posted here, I normally get my news from CNN. I tend to lean left politically, but not always.

The problem I always run into is that every news site I read, regardless of where they stand on the political spectrum, is always filled with pointless bullshit. Specifically, sports, celebrity news, and product placement. "Some shitty pop singer is dating some shitty actor" or "These are our recommendations for the best mass-produced garbage-quality fast fashion from Temu" or "Some overpaid dickhead threw a ball faster than some other overpaid dickhead."

What I'd love to find is a news source that's just news that matters. No celebrity gossip, sports, opinion pieces, etc. Just real events that have an impact on some part of the world. Legislation, natural events, economic changes, wars, political changes, that kind of thing.

Does this exist, or is all journalism just entertainment?

Every place has its different environment, whether it be the level of organisation, reputation of socialism, dominant values of society, history and experiences, conflicts and crises. Because of these dynamics, I'd expect to see stark differences in what the movement looks like around the world. An obvious example familiar to most here is seeing the widespread and militant union mobilisations in France's retirement age protests.

Which countries do you have experience in, and how are their labour movements different?

The title is intentionally vague by saying 'labour movement', so you're welcome to talk about workplace attitudes, unions, socialist organisations, legislation and more.

There is this guy I like, I have reason to think he may like me too but we're both playing dumb, or maybe I'm just imagining it all.

Yes, that's how immature I am. Now please help me.

We've known each other for years and we seem to get close to each other, then we take distance, then close again, repeat, repeat, repeat.

I'm terrified of losing him as a friend for trying to be more than just that. I've already lost people for showing my interest and I've also had to burn the bridge with guys who wouldn't give me space or kept hitting up on me repeatedly. This happens.

I would like to create a consistent, regular conversation going on. I'm afraid of overwhelming him so I don't even know what's a good frequency to reach out.

Personally the biggest challenge for me is finding ways to deepen our conversations. Things tend to stay pretty much on the surface most of the time, even though we can talk of almost any topic openly. Another barrier is our very different interests, we have almost no shared media in common (different music, different shows watched/liked, different videogames liked etc).

Usually when talking to other friends, conversations tend to naturally steer towards more meaningful topics. I don't know if I'm inadvertently holding myself back with him, or if finding meaningful topics has always been a thing started by the other person and I've never realized it.

So, any tips?

Have you got ways to deepen conversations?

Guys, have girls ever impressed you positively and how?

Thanks

Out of a reflex of distrust, I refuse to participate in any kind of loyalty program of the outlet of the large retail store around the corner.

I tell myself that by refusing to join the loyalty program (which basically comes down to scanning an anonymous loyalty card every time I make a purchase), I prevent them from adding my correlations (what products I buy, in what combos, at what time) to their data.

But since I normally pay by card, I guess they can (and do) already do that with my bank account information?

If I would pay with cash, they can still see those correlations per purchase, but they can't track my purchases over time?

So quite a few lemmy clients have a tagging feature for users. I use it quite constantly because I like to remember who I'm talking to. Though for some I just use it for descriptors. A few of you are listed as stubborn, a few of you are listed as don't engage, a few are Nice, or helpful, or Pug. I believe one of you is just listed as fish guy(don't remember why).

How do you all use your tagging system, if you do at all?

Does anyone know if there are any companies/organizations that offer the possibility to sail the Atlantic by boat as a passenger (so not as a (more or less) experienced crew member). Are there any? Or announced plans or something like that?

(I'm not talking about being a passenger on a large cargo ship. I'm curious about the possibility to cross the Atlantic with a low carbon footprint).

From what I understand, a big part of what's happening with Boeing, is that Boeing is run by Business person who want to maximize return of stock-owner rather than by people wanting to make a good product. The gained flexibility/nicer budget from massive sub-contracting led to "loss of knowledge", and cutting-down quality control steps which "never catch anything" led to issue being missed-out.

Do you think that MBA program will take this reality into account ? or would they keep focusing on maximizing short-term profit even if it jeopardize the company's future ?

I love horror but apparently I don't vibe with a lot of recommendations I find online.

I'd seen so much hype about Event Horizon and I absolutely hated it and didn't find it scary. I just watched Late Night With the Devil and whole it was definitely enjoyable, it wasn't the least but frightening. I also just watched Let the Right One In and really didn't like it. It also was not a horror movie in my opinion.

I will say one of my favorites is Sinister or the first Conjuring. Sinister for the stomach twisting dread and suspence throughout and Conjuring for the same.

So, what movies do you find to be the scariest?

My favourite sandwich has gotta be mayo chicken in a bagel with crunchy lettuce, satisfying in both taste and the crunchy texture of chopped iceberg lettuce from the shops.

Another one would be sausage and egg with some cheeky brown sauce (British lemmy users know what I mean)

What is YOUR favourite sandwich? Fillings or sauces to go with it, maybe your favourite type of bread?
