Hi all!

We're very excited to move to Denmark soon as lifelong Americans. I have a good job lined up, and we're set on a place to live for a while.

Any advice from people who have done it, looked it up, had friends who have done it, etc? Just in general :)

Currently I possess 3 :

Sony HX350 Bridge Camera - My first ever camera!

Nikon EM Series 1979 - Passed down from my uncle who was clearing some bits and bobs out his garage.

Nikon D5600 DSLR - I didn't want to break the bank and got this one on a good sale (And I like the Nikon UI for the camera more than the Sony one)

I enjoy taking two types of photographs :

Portraits of people outdoors and indoors - SoSometimes for a new profile picture.

Animals - I enjoy taking photographs birds, squirrels, zoo animals and my cat whenever he's in a good striking pose.

What about you? Are you into photography as a hobby or profession?

Just out of curiosity. I don't have a real need for this.

So I've been trying to find info on my great-grandparents but after snooping around in ancestry.com and familysearch.com I realise there are no records for any of my parents, grandparents or great grandparents online. At least not on those sites.

And so I'm here wondering, what happened with those records? Anyone had any luck searching elsewhere? I've tried googling the names and nothing comes up either. Hooray for privacy I guess?

It's true that when people die, they get a new life as a new person, in terms of the person's vision (what we see from our eyes)?

Hi everyone - wondering what advice you can offer for building something like this. Ideally I’d like to create a simple wiki for creative projects (mostly for content in the DnD campaigns my group has run over the years) and give others editing access, but would prefer something free or low-cost (no more than $10 monthly would be nice). How might one go about doing this? Just bite the bullet and pay for hosting? Maybe use a service like Azure or Linode?

I should add, I would rather avoid Fandom/wikia pages since that platform is an ad-riddled mess and I dislike using it. Most guidance I’ve found online mentions fandom so I’m hoping for different opinions.

I’m moderately tech savvy but have never done self-hosting (though I’d give it a shot if it’s simple enough to build and keep secure). Thanks!

I'm not interested in what the dictionary says or a textbook definition I'm interested in your personal distinction between the two ideas. How do you decide to put an idea in one category versus the other? I'm not interested in the abstract concepts like 'objective truth' I want to know how it works in real life for you.

I'd like to get one that has widely available filters and would prefer to spend less than $250 as much as I would like a Dyson one. It's only for an apartment so I don't think I need something massive but I do live above a busy road.

I struggle with this for my personal computer. The TV-computer combo shuts off the monitor (triggers the tv to shut off when there is no input) after an hour. An hour after that it's suspended, works well.

My personal computer though, sometimes I shut off the monitor, most of the time I let it run for the day completely powered. I have yet to set any type of shutdown or standby because typically I use it more than I do my tv (work, gaming, videos, etc on the comp). I know there's some power conservation I need to consider for motivation, I have no security concern atm with my standard main account and everything private is layered so inaccessible.

what's everyone else's setup like for when they walk away from the computer?

Here's the research I've already done:

He's a snub nosed dog so he's not allowed underneath the planes in cargo due to risk of death. But he's freaking dense so he's not allowed in most cabins because they have a 15 lb weight limit.

United Airlines seems to have a size limit for dogs in the cabin, but no weight limit. However, both on the website and the app, when I search for transatlantic flights, I get error messages.

I also researched some cargo pet transport companies but I'd be looking at $3k each direction.

Our starting city is San Diego and our destination is Formentera, Spain. But if we could find a way to transport him from San Diego to anywhere in Spain or France, we could go the rest of the way by train so that would work just fine.

Do you think that video games will be still known when they will enter the public domain (copyrights expiring)?

I'm pulling for Monday. Friday's already mostly a write-off.

Let's say I decided that instead of blogging, I wanted to host my own Lemmy instance that contained a maximum of one (1) user– me, but allowing other users to subscribe.

To show what I'm talking about, look at how kaidomac uses Reddit as his own personal microblog, which people subscribe to.

What is the cheapest way to do this?

My mental model of Lemmy is that if I were to do this, the instance would still be caching information from other instances. This would– at least in my mine– add up in costs.

I'm a software engineer, so feel free to use technical jargon.

I'm non-techy. I work for a public school district and visit with kids in about a dozen schools. I like having my work email on my phone so teachers can get in touch if they need me. For years we've just used the outlook app with no real issues that I've noticed. We're seeing more and more micromanagement and it sucks. We recently got notice that we have to install Cisco Duo on our phones if we want to have our email on it. Should i do that? Or just say no and be ok with being out of contact?

I used to own an instant pot. Those are great. I gave it away when I moved and now I just have a regular pressure cooker, which is also really great.

My quickest and easiest, but still yummy thing to make is chickpeas. I soak them overnight. Pick out the ugly ones. Drain the water. Barely cover them with fresh water (since they’ve already soaked, they don’t need tons of water). Then I heat the pot on high until I hear the pressure noise, switch it to low heat, and let it cook for 15-20 minutes. Then I turn off the heat and let the pressure out naturally.

Once they’re done I sometimes just eat a bowl of them with nothing more than olive oil and salt. Yum.

One of my other favorite dishes is a bit more elaborate but still simple and healthy: split pea soup. I don’t soak the peas but I do rinse them. I put them in the pressure cooker with a bay leaf, chopped garlic and onions, diced potatoes and carrots, and I'll cover the whole thing with a decent amount of water. Then, like the chick peas, I’ll let the pressure hiss, then put it on low heat for 15-20 minutes. I let the pressure naturally release.

Sometimes I’ll sautée even more onions and garlic in a separate pan with avocado oil on low heat for a while, until they look like they’re getting caramelized (fucking yum).

When the soup is done, I’ll remove the bay leaf, add the extra onions and garlic (if I did that step), add some salt, then use an immersion blender. It’s SUPER IMPORTANT to remove the bay leaf if you use an immersion blender.

Then when I eat it, I put a decent amount of olive oil and make sure the salt level is tasty. Even better if I have spicy olive oil around :)

Well, Mozilla seems to be making some pretty questionable decisions, So I'm considering switching browsers for the third (Is it the third?) time. The thing is, I really like the way Firefox works, so I've been trying out the more famous Forks like Waterfox and Librewolf, although I'm going for Floorp. However, I'm wondering: is using a fork enough? I mean, they are Forks maintained by other people, but is there a chance that whatever Mozilla does to Firefox could affect those Forks? Should I jump to a totally different browser like Vivaldi?

I would honestly think freezing airports, hospitals and other services for days would cause a lot of legal trouble.

At least that's what would happen if an experienced hacker did the same thing.

What's your relationship like with your grandparents?

My grandma passed last weeek. I've been thinking about my relationship with her and my other grandparents. My family and I visit them on holidays and they were nice enough. But I don't feel like I knew my grandma or know my other grandparents.

I think my family is weird maybe? Idk it's the only one I know lol. We'd talk about tv and movies we've watched recently. What they watched. Tell the grandparents what was going on in our lives. Ask about what was going in grandma and grandpas life. Mostly get answers like "same old same old", tales of doctor visits, or NCIS.

But like who are they as people? What were dreams when they were young? what adventures have they been on? what sparks joy in their life? What struggles have been through?

Like if I had to describe my grandmother I'd say she was a nice, pleasant lady who was mostly kind and liked cats, but not enough to get her own, just fed the neighbors cat. A description a stranger could give after meeting her talking for a bit maybe.

Looking back at my relationship with my grandparents, it all feels surface level. I never shared any of the hard shit I was dealing with, never really vulnerable around them. They were never vulnerable around me.

I don't know many details of their life beyond career, maybe the places they've lived, pets they've owned.

Maybe that's a reflection on my parents. We were never really vulnerable with each other about stuff, when someone was it was often mocked. My parents were not good parents a lot of the time. Who knows maybe that's a result of their parents?

But umm yeah, Lemmy what's your relationship like with your grandparents? Are you real close? Do you know them well, or more like a coworker you enjoy occasionally small talking with? Or rotten shitbags? I wish I knew my grandma better.
