I used to be good at time management and very motivated in my career. Then about two years ago I lost a close friend over a strong disagreement and then lost my job.

Slowly but surely I became a bit depressed and had some physical health issues. I'm seeing a therapist already, and a few months ago I finally managed to get a plebe job at a retailer, but when it comes to doing my personal work that would open doors in my industry I just can't seem to find the time and motivation to do it.

Don't get me wrong. I got plenty of time available, I just find myself being ridiculously avoidant or distracted or tired, you get the idea. And, no, I don't use social media much, I don't videogame or binge shows. I just get distracted with house chores or simply overthinking.

I've already tried lists, planning and goal setting ( all this comes naturally to me), but it makes no difference.

I've tried reducing the expectations and goals, no difference. I still don't do anything.

I tried apps to keep track of my progress; also useless.

I've even considered finding a life coach, but I get the feeling they're a scam. Unfortunately I don't have any friends or relatives that can help me stay on track with my goals.

TLDR I'm getting a bit desperate here. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Brazilian music is famous worldwide — from bossa nova, to choro, to samba.

Bossa is cool, choro is amazing, but my favorite things about samba is that despite being "pop music" it still has complex rhythms and harmonies.

My top favorite thing is the prevalence of the 7 stringed guitar and their use of counterpoints (i.e., parallel melodies).

I love how what (I think) started as guitarists just playing harmonies, turned into them improvising bass lines and counterpoints every once in a while, which eventually became them doing MOSTLY counterpoints and bass lines and barely playing the harmony lmao.

These bass lines and counterpoints, from what I understand, are often times arpeggiations of the chords and so forth, but they add such an amazing effect to the music.

The world has a lot of different standards for a lot of things, but I have never heard of a place with the default screw thread direction being opposite.

So does each language have a fun mnemonic?

It's surprising that pagan religions of Europe have disappeared, but polytheistic religions of Asia (especially India) survived and are still widely followed there. Why?

I'll start. My girlfriend's cat never purrs or does the "baking biscuits" thing even when he is clearly enjoying the cuddles.

Any suggestions for paid one time purchase apps on the Google play store?

I've researched the topic and I understand that the general advice is that it's best to learn on your own. However, I'd like to see Lemmy's recommendations regarding websites where you can book programming (Python/R) sessions with a personal tutor online, ideally if you have used the service yourself. I mostly need it to maintain my motivation and learn regularly instead of sporadically.

Hey all,

So I'm in the search for good quality skate style t-shirts, preferably not black and white. In the past I was a big fun of the Animal brand but in the recent years they've turned mainstream.

Any recommendations are much appreciated!

There are places like internet archive that preserve things like videos, images, audios, books and programs, but I have not seen any website that preserves only cooking recipes, do you know of any?

You might consider this a sequel to a past question I've had, except instead of teaching them how to be artists, it's teaching them how to be devout in whatever you follow. For the sake of respecting technicalities, the loosest definition of religion/ideology/politics will be used here, which is incidentally a definition where they have historically overlapped.

I have relatives who have mental challenges, and this question is inspired by my wonder all the time as someone who has lived much of his life in a very zealous religious community who has observed local missionaries (everyone is a missionary in this small town) try to get creative trying to teach the gospel to people who couldn't comprehend how an airplane works. Some of them have taken notes from psychologists and used toys inspired by the psychologists' usage of Mr. Potato Head toys to diagnose autism (not sure if they still do that), others have simplified the gospel into some extremely simplified analogies, made to fit the language model inside these individuals' minds, which both almost makes it resemble a cargo cult at times as the method used often has them using, for example, objects and their lack of object permanence as an allegory for prophets. So on and so forth. It's both fascinating and terrifying, but it begs my question when it comes to interspecies communication which is an interesting topic.

Suppose you absolutely had to do this, either for some consequentialist social reason or maybe for an experiment to see if adherence would be possible. What method would you perform?

Even as someone who tends to play along with bans, this seems like a weird concept. I'm referring to those moments you walk into a club or a service one day and the people in charge say something along the lines of "you're banned from our establishment because we learned you're an artist that deals with controversial subject matter" or "we banned you because we heard that was you who engaged in those reckless activities that sent that one person to need care".

We barely are able to enforce the Hague convention, so it makes me wonder what the mindset is when people try to take this on, as outside your jurisdiction, something could potentially be of any kind of context, as rules, etiquette, and protocol can differ enough between clubs and services that it's almost as if the laws of physics can sometimes seem to differ.

One day, I witnessed a conversation between some rule enforcers and someone I know, and the suspicious rule enforcers asked why the individual so often likes to remain as low a profile as possible, and the individual responded "if I was as open about myself to everyone as everyone else is with each other, the amount of restrictions I'd have would quintuple due to the sheer amount of people who have grown a habit of hating me for no ethical reason whatsoever", which also drags the issue of openness into the conversation.

Or... or maybe I'm wrong and/or am missing something. What's your opinion on this practice? And what stands out to you as the last or most notable time this happened?

I just learnt a sore tooth of mine is caused by my tooth root never fully closing (due to getting braces and shifting my teeth around). Now at 30 I need a root canal.

I’ve never even had a cavity before. I’m legit terrified. Teeth are the one thing that are much worse than nails on chalkboard for me.

How was your experience been? Any words of advice or words of encouragement? I could use it :(

It’s been like 3 weeks now that I’ve woken up at 4am without good reason. Have tried physical activity, melatonin, going to bed earlier.. nothing seems to work. Any advice is appreciated.
