This is difficult to explain. I can't figure out a rule of thumb for spending, the prices of things fluctuate so quickly it's confusing. Here are some examples

  1. A house, prices are out of control, inventory is low, sellers are greedy. I'm feeling not only unable to afford it but finding lack of value in inflated prices

  2. Computer parts. Relatively cheap compared to pandemic but more expensive than before but also much cheaper than 90s/00s, but still could be cheaper

  3. TWS earbuds, completely different ball game from regular earbuds, disposable electronics.

  4. Food. Nights out with drinks now sometimes cost me more than 2 & 3, but seem like just keeping up with inflation

The prices range from 100,000s to 100s, but some are fleeting, some semi permanent, some last a long time. I also spend hours researching prices of parts and waiting for sales, but spending the same amount on social events in an instant

Hi my fellow Lemmy users! It’s been a while since I used this platform and boy did I actually miss you all ❤️

It’s just that I’ve been more so focusing on myself in my career and in my own education. So I graduated back in June and man it sure does feel like a lifetime ago already. Settled in a good paying job and still trying to improve myself wherever I can.

This brings us to the question that I wanted to ask everyone here. As I’ve been very focused on academics and career stuff I never had the opportunity to date and I’ve been rejected very frequently (which is to be expected as a man tbh). I haven’t been able to lose weight and that I’m 25 years old.

I know that’s still pretty young but I still feel so behind on dating tbh. Is it still too late for me to find someone I want to be with after I’ve lost weight? Does losing weight help for men as it does for women? I’ve been trying to join meetups, volunteering (just to meet new people tbh) and really put myself out there. It’s just idk like all my friends are committed and I’m just floating around life whilst focusing on my career.

I know a lot of people but I find it really difficult to maintain contact with most of them. I can manage a few in my close circle and some acquaintances but definitely not more than 20 people.

It doesn't take much time for the gap to widen and before you know it they'll start treating you like a stranger.

So I was thinking whether there's something like the Forgetting curve for relationships.

Maybe finding out the optimal time interval can help me set reminders to connect with a few people now and then.

Well this was just a though that randomly came to me. I thought I'd ask the wonderful people over here.

And if not, is there enough interest in fishing to create a community? I've looked around a bit and haven't found any fishing threads. I'd have no clue as to how to go about setting up a community, much less find time to moderate something like that. But I'd really like a place to discuss fishing in different parts of the U.S. and around the world.

Hi, I got a used laptop from an family member. It did have this this annoying sticker on it (see picture). Apparently for years already.

So, how can I remove it without scratching the metal body or leaving residue behind?

Edit: Having some problems with picture upload, but here's a similar photo for reference: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/jDV7-ehqF38/maxresdefault.jpg

Yeah, basically that. I'm back at work in Windows land on a Monday morning, and pondering what sadist at Microsoft included these features. It's not hyperbole to say that the startup repair, and the troubleshooters in settings, have never fixed an issue I've encountered with Windows. Not even once. Is this typical?

ETA: I've learned from reading the responses that the Windows troubleshooters primarily look for missing or broken drivers, and sometimes fix things just by restarting a service, so they're useful if you have troublesome hardware.

I've been thinking about something and want to check an assumption I have. I only hear directly from other people in the USA, and interract with the global community through memes. How are the gun regulations/laws different from yours in terms of strictness, and do you wish there was more or less where you live?

Not looking for a debate here, discuss cold drinks vs hot drinks instead. Appreciate either answer. ❤️

Edit: Thanks for the answers all. I'm super proud how productive eveyone kept this talk. I figured most of you had very different experiences than I. I'll share my most recent experience. I don't have a firearm, but have considered it after being trained enough. When sharing this with "normal" people around town, I had multiple people offer to sell or gift me a gun where the serial number was scratched off and non-traceable. I ofter heard, "oh man, yeah. You need a gun." I have literally never needed one. The fact that people offer to give me one when I don't have a liscence or training shows the mindset of the minority here and how much of a problem a few individuals can make to safety within the current system.

I have just realised that alien.top seems to be mirroring reddit accounts, posts and comments, without labelling them as such. What is the point of this one way mirroring? As soon as users realise, they are going to just leave. There is no point having a discussion with a bot that cannot respond.

My current place is being sold, so my cheap ass rent for an entire house? Gone!

Oh well, I have a friend in QC looking to move, and he asked if I'd join him. Prices in MTL are of negligible difference to my city in Ontario, but the area we'd be looking is in the more-french portion of MTL.

So I've got maybe 4 months to learn as much french as I can. I have an ok understanding of syntax and can parse the phonemes on the bad end of ok.

I don't wanna use the Owl app, I don't think it's actually that effective a language teacher.

Any advice on how I can shove in as much french as I can to become minimally conversational?

Apps, anki decks, textbooks; anything would be appreciated. ♥

I recently started working with a lot of clients that use the adobe suite, mostly illustrator. And wanted to get a laptop to work and move around with.

I'm trying to stay away from apple, seeing those prices for the storage they have I'm looking for another option.

I'm looking into ThinkPads but there are so many options I don't know what would be a good choice, must have a good bright screen and a good keyboard.

These can be smoothies, bars, drinks, supplements, etc.

Is there something specific you look for (ex. price, ingredients, specific nutrients etc.)?

Is there a brand you like / avoid (ex. soylent, huel, hol food, etc.)

Edit:

I definitely don't recommend fully replacing your diet with them. I know some people use them instead of other processed food / fast food / skipping meals entirely, and that's the use case I had in mind for myself

Where do you find alternatives for your subreddits? I found most of them but for these I can't find any alternatives so I'm still using old.reddit and redreader.

It would be a good way of seeing what else is out there.

There are a lot of fake and misleading deals out there, so what are some of the legitimate deals that are worth getting?

For example:

  • Things for which the advice through the year was 'wait for Black Friday'.
  • Good brands that you recommend (ethical, good quality, or some other reason)

I just listened to this AI generated audiobook and if it didn't say it was AI, I'd have thought it was human-made. It has different voices, dramatization, sound effects... The last I'd heard about this tech was a post saying Stephen Fry's voice was stolen and replicated by AI. But since then, nothing, even though it's clearly advanced incredibly fast. You'd expect more buzz for something that went from detectable as AI to indistinguishable from humans so quickly. How is it that no one is talking about AI generated audiobooks and their rapid improvement? This seems like a huge deal to me.
