As the title say I am looking for some advice.

I’m almost 6 months into my first role and it really isn’t what I expected.

I’m late thirties and always had an interest in tech, but personal circumstances and a late start in life left me unsure if I was good enough.

I did too many boot camps and in all them they discussed how in your first role you would get lots of support to help develop your skills.

I work for a small company < 10. I don’t feel I get the support I expected.

A lot of time the spec is kept in the lead engineers (owners) head and when given a task I get no timeframe, the task is given verbally with 100 words when I need 1000 words. It’s confusing to understand their vision so I’ll do something and either be told great or no that’s completely wrong.

If wrong I’m not called out and they will spend a little more time going over what they want.

The boss is always so busy that sometimes you feel like a burden asking for pointers.

The tech stack is great but as a mature company they have refined the process over numerous projects and the newest will start as a copy of the last one, keeping all the shared hooks and stuff, so naturally it’s second nature to them and I feel stupid.

I guess my question is is this normal and how do I write an email expressing these concerns and to gauge how I am doing?

As an aside, there is no remote work and no headphones in the office, even though nobody really talks about work that often. So when is a good time to start looking for your second role.

I feel like I flip between I am a god and can code anything and omg I know nothing show me the nearest bridge.

Thanks.

why 😭

it tastes so good

Edit: I have looked at the nutrition label and done some mental math based on how much of the container is left. 80% of daily cholesterol. 100% daily saturated fats. 120% daily added sugars. This was in one glass.

What the fuck is this liquid taco bell bullshit

Postmortem: after sleeping and having a nightmare where I had a heart attack and died while shitting my brains out, I have poured the remaining half of the eggnog down the drain and have resolved to never buy it again because I like being alive

So I was watching a few youtubes and remembered how the vast majority (of like the ten) nes games me and my sister had were hard as all hell. I loved to play Little Nemo and Street Fighter 2010 but I am pretty sure I never made it past the third level of either. Let alone infamously hard games like The Lion King.

Which got me thinking. Basically every game for the past 20 years has been designed around instant gratification and being accessible. We outright had to make a new concept "hard but fair" to account for games like Dark Souls that are designed to be difficult but beatable as opposed to putting you in a death spiral if you hesitate too long on a hard jump (hello Ninja Gaiden).

So do the younger folk even have a concept of a "favorite game" where you likely never experienced more than fifteen minutes worth of content?

I’ve got a kindle keyboard 3 and want to know if there’s anything better out now. My main requirement is being able to load in my own content and have a nice cover/case

I don’t care about apps or web browsers, but it would be nice to have something that is easy to sync or upload data to.

I assume there are people who read these things, otherwise companies wouldn't send me so many of them. I seem to get daily spam from literally any company I've ever interacted with in any way, and they are long boys full of text and pictures that Thunderbird helpfully hides from me but I presume are full of jagged brightly coloured stars saying "DEAL DEAL DEAL" or whatever.

Mostly I click delete on these emails faster than the email client can even load them, but every so often I peruse a few sentences of the trade specific items that give a headline that promises actually interesting information... but its always just more marketing guff disguised as a news story.

It's obviously making someone money to spam the world constantly, so I assume someone is reading these things and acting on them.

  1. Who are you?
  2. Why are you interacting with the spam and making it viable for companies to keep sending it?
  3. What do you do that you have so much free time you can allocate some of it to consuming it?

This is going to be more of a life pro tip, but trying to reach the largest audience here.

Just had a frantic neighbour knocking at my door saying there is a fire in her oven.

I was over there in under 60 seconds with the fire extinguisher. There was a pot of oil on fire wedged between the element and the rack. No way to quickly and safely remove it, so I blasted it.

If I had tried to remove the pan, it's likely it would have ended up spilling burning oil everywhere and making the situation much worse. Now they just have a house full of dust to clean.

Will replace our extinguisher today and am considering buying a few more to gift this Christmas.

I'll start. Apt next door is having a cockroach infected. 4 days ago, I was playing sims on my laptop, wearing my eyeglasses. Right lens got blurry, took off, huge cockroach was crawling across inside of lens. While I was wearing them. Freak out ensued.

I find myself checking out pretty often and just making myself feel bad about the state of the world, or killing half an hour on stupid games that I could 100% live without. This is probably pretty common, and I'm wondering what other people have found as a way to do more productive things with their phones in the downtime.

I'm thinking of watching 'Halt and Catch Fire', but I'm also taking a hardware & OS course right now, and I was worried that it might teach me some wrong stuff. I might wait till after the final to watch it.

I just need to preserve some old data that I have on my computers, so I was wondering what would be the best way to archive stuff long term.

Blu-ray disks ? Multiple HDDs ? What do you guys suggest ?

For example, I 3d printed a box over my outlet to protect my cables from my bed pushing against it. In addition, my cables never fall to the floor so they're much easier to grab.

I’m fairly new to the Fediverse, and I'd like to share my onboarding experience. Personally, I appreciate the concept of decentralization and the community-driven aspect of Fediverse. I’ve used Mastodon and Lemmy, based on ActivityPub, for a while:

  1. I find it difficult to get all the updates I need on a particular instance, and except for a few very large instances, most others appear quite quiet and like the Internet ten years ago.

  2. The content and style of each instance tend to be quite diverse. To find someone to follow, I must switch between different instances with lengthy domains.

  3. Fediverse isn't truly decentralized; instances operate under the will of server owners, who can ban and remove content as they please.

These reasons prompted me to explore more decentralized networks, I mean truly decentralized networks, such as Nostr.

However, creating a Nostr account and saving the Recovery Phrases is challenging (I lost my first Nostr account due to the loss of Recovery Phrases). And generally speaking, the user experience on Nostr is much worse than Mastodon, full of scam and ads.

I believe people should leave Twitter due to shadowbans and robots and Facebook due to privacy concerns, but I'm struggling to choose a platform to migrate to. Each has its drawbacks, making it difficult to decide.

I'd love to hear your opinions on this.

I'm noticing an influx of Reddit users today, maybe revolving around their weird bug they had today. I know this question pops up semi regularly, but for those just getting their foot in the door maybe we can help show them what else is out here on the Fediverse to help them get started.

I'll kick us off, to any newcomers, I help run the following communities, and we'd welcome you to any of them. (Shameless self promotion I know, but I hope more people join in sharing theirs as well)

For help and support, taken right from the sidebar of AskLemmy here

An important one to kick off, we do have an entire community just for this over at !communitypromo@lemmy.ca (https://lemmy.ca/c/communitypromo) for a more long-running conversation

For new users, I hope you find some communities that you enjoy! For current users, share your favorite communities that new folks may be interested in! (Please use both the !@_ notation and give a link, to help our new fediverse people out in learning how it works)

Maybe December? So we all take money out of banks, at least current month salary, and spend cash only. I think that is something that shouldn't be hard to do and it would show if we, the people, have any power left to make positive changes for the future or we can just surrender and eat bugs.

Edit:

If I’m trading my only true value, my time, then I want to have 100% control over it, not to depend if some bank would freeze my account and I lost 1/3 of my life irreversible.

I was not sure where to post this, so apologies if this isn’t the right place and would like to know where I should go.

For a while now, I cannot see my own posts. Despite having made 33 posts.

It will show up as if I have never made one

I have this particular problem with several Lemmy apps: Avelon, Memmy, Mlem and Voyager.

I’m curious if other people have a similar issue or what I can do to fix this. I tried to log in/out & delete and reinstall app. Doesn’t work unfortunately.

I attached an image of what it shows me when, I try to check my own posts.

2020 was... truly unique. It was so hard to stay away from doom scrolling, and I (and many others) were pretty disillusioned by the sad fact that so much of our country legitimately supported the Orange Man. I didn't get a wink of sleep the night of the election because I genuinely considered it to be a make or break decision for America.

My point is that looking back on it, in the end the only real difference I made was at the ballet box. This year I'm going for the Head-in-the-Sand approach. I'm done with the political memes. Done with the Twitter screenshots. It just riles me up and this year I'm gonna do my best to fight that.

My teeth are in good health and I take good care of them, yet I always get this plaque buildup no matter what I try.

I've tried different brushes, toothpastes, and flossing methods to no avail. Mouthwash is too harsh on my mouth and peels my skin off so I avoid that.

I haven't tried waterpicks or electric brushes yet. Did you? Did they work for you? Have you succeeded in preventing plaque and if so, how???
