Hello! I was looking on https://plexus.techlore.tech for my most used apps to understand what I'd miss if I degoogled my smartphone, and surprising Satispay seems to be completely unusable without play services or microG. It is very counter intuitive for me, as it has nothing to do with google. Any idea?

Which Lemmy App is Stable Like Jerboa but has "Hide Read Post" Feature? (and no not the lemmy built-in setting to hide read posts).

I've tried Infinity and Sync but they're unstable (closes out when posting comments, posts, viewing context, etc.) which rarely happens in Jerboa.

Hi all. I'm in the market for a new Android phone and I was hoping you could help with recommendations.

Thanks to my awesome friend cancer (and its awesome friends at Phillip Morris), I had my larynx removed and can no longer speak. Because of that, I use my phone as my main form of communication, typing out things and showing my phone to people. It's in my hand all the time and it's VERY important to me.

Thanks to some of the side effects of the drugs that are keeping me alive, I am very sensitive to heat. My phone (Oneplus 7T) gets hot when I'm gaming, most phones do, and it can occasionally get too uncomfortable for me to use. It doesn't happen often though. My wife's Pixel Fold, on the other hand, gets too hot just from normal use. I've read this is a thing with the newer Pixel phones.

So the most important criterion right now is that it can't get too hot. Even when charging.

Second most important criterion is weight, since I'm constantly holding it and showing it to people... Or just sitting in bed texting. The Pixel Fold is cool and all, but too damn heavy to be lugging around everywhere.

Third would be size. With the amount I type, a bigger screen means bigger buttons and fewer typos. I know that bigger tends to mean heavier so there's a balance to be struck between this priority and the previous one. One of the reasons I'm looking for help.

Last, I tend to prefer a close-to-stock Android experience. But given the importance of my other priorities, this is lower on the list.

Some other info: I live in the US, I'm on T-Mo currently but I only buy unlocked phones, price is obviously a consideration but not a constraint, don't care about camera, nice screen and high refresh would be nice to have.

Thanks in advance for any help. It's such a pain to try to sift through all the phones every few years. I used to just pick the newest Nexus. Then the newest Oneplus. But Google and Oneplus aren't what they used to be and so I'm open to suggestions now. Thanks!

So I saw this new "app" is wanting to be installed onto my system, and naturally I was curious what it was.

So I read the description and it seems that it's just another case of Google moving a system service onto the Play Store so that they can update it separately from system updates.

I was surprised though at how many users are blaming it for slowdowns, things crashing, and other headaches...

Is this just a case of the uninformed looking for a scapegoat for their problems, or is there a cause for concern?

(Not like I have much of a choice though, as I'm sure it'll install eventually alongside my other app updates anyway)

Edit: for whatever reason, I can only access the link I shared in this post on my Android phone - I can't access it on anything else. Also I'm based in the US, so a regional block might also happen, I'm guessing.

Hello! I'm trying to make google maps go work on my android smartphone. Google maps go is basically a wrapper of the website, that should provide navigation feature with another app called "navigator for Google maps". I have both installed, but when I click on "navigate in app", the link "maps.app.goo.gl/somethingverylong" is redirected to the play store website instead of being opened with the navigator app. Both apps have all permissions granted. What am I doing wrong?

Bonus question: do I really need the google maps go app or is it also possible to redirect to the navigator app from the browser?
Bonus question #2: would the navigator app work without google play services, on a degoogled rom?

Thanks in advance!

I recently tried to install an app called chippin (might be a regional app) but the app crashed. Couldn't understand why and got rid of it, later realized that recently working apps like 8ball pool started to crash too. Thought It was a system-wide issue and painfully factory reset my phone. That fixed my issue and my apps started working again, until I tried to reinstall chippin. After chippin crashed again, other normally working apps started to crash too

I use Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 pro Android 13 with flashed MIUI 14 Global 14.0.2.0 Rooted with modules : Shamiko, Universal safetyNet fix, Zygisk and LSPosed modules : Disable flag secure and lucky patcher

If anyone has an idea about why this problem is caused or how can I fi it, It would help a lot. I really don't want to painstakingly factory reset again

Edit: I tested with a different phone and problem seems to be only on my phone. I have no option other than factory reset, not use the problem app and hope for the best I think so I am going to do that for now.

Hello everyone, I recently moved from iPhone to a Samsung Z Fold phone and I have some questions about notifications.

How notifications work^(as most of you know)^ on iPhone is almost the same as Android where both get a swipe down notification menu. Apple calls it a notification centre, while Android has it mixed with quick settings.

When it comes to badge notifications, the small bubble above an App icon with a number. These types of notifications are easily dismissed on iPhone by opening up the app and just looking at what that notification is, whether it was a message on Discord or a YouTube push notification.

This doesn't seem to work on my Android phone, and I can't emulate this behaviour either by going through system settings. These badge notifications do not go away even after opening the app and even when the app itself recognizes it has no more notifications to offer, yet still the phone itself refuses to dismiss the badge notification unless I clear that notification in the swipe down notification centre/menu.

Is this the intended behaviour and is it possible to change it? I've heard there is a degree of freedom on Android, especially on Samsung. So I'm keeping up my hopes.

EDIT: I FIXED IT

This was the problem child--just had to "Clear data" and badge notifications now clear when App is opened!

I know various apps & launchers enable different sorts of long press context menu options, but I was wondering if there's any sort of "universal" context menu that could be used across apps to enable some otherwise absent functionality.

For example, some apps it doesn't necessarily make much sense to have text selection enabled, but you may still want to copy over the text to run a separate search. Others may try to force you to open links via the app's link redirect/browser (or the app's just glitching & won't let you tap the link) or whatever instead of letting you select & copy the link text to open it in your own browser or run it through a link checking tool.

Given those situations, this sort of "universal" context menu could be super useful, but I haven't had luck turning anything up & I'm not sure what search terms may be better for this. Thanks in advance!

What weather app do you use?

And what weather provider (many apps support several) looks most accurate for you, especially for users from Europe.

I've alrealy played all versions of Space Marshals, Tesla vs Lovecraft, Tesla Force, Jydge, Crimsonland, Grind Infinity, Solomon Keep, PewPew, and Vampire Survivors (although it's not twin stick but close enough).

Are there any new twin stick shooters, preferrably something I can pay for once and without IAP going up to $100?

I was looking into the top communities in https://sub.rehab and I was surprised to see Geometry Dash at the very top.

I remember first hearing about this game in 2013, and I was surprised it still has its community and enthusiasts even after 10 years.

What other mobile games are still relevant in 2023?

Hello, I want to import my plenary .opml file to Read You but it doesn't do anything. The same thing happens to other apps.
I exported a test .opml file from Pluma and it did work though.

I can convert the file from Plenary manually according to the one from Pluma but it'll take some time. Is there any other way?

I'm looking for a plain text editor (not a "notes" app like Notion or Simplenote) that automatically syncs to Google Drive or Dropbox and saves the notes as .txt files. Any suggestions?

I'm struggling to find good offline, preferably paid or with 1 time in app purchase, games for Android.

All the popular ones just want to milk you on IAP. I prefer to make 1 payment and be done.

I'm looking for something along the lines of Double Dragon but optimistised for modern screens. Some arcade action adventure with a story and progression.

Can't find anything.

I've got a Pixel 7 on Android 13. Once in a while I read about how it's usually good to factory reset your phone after a software update, so I thought I might when I update to Android 14. That said, I refuse to go through the process of setting up my phone like new again, especially with things like fingerprints and tasker profiles being a pain to setup again.

The Google Backup seems purely cosmetic. I can't think of a single thing it restores every single time I use it. Are there any options to actually back my phone up before an update that don't involve root?

Qualcomm announced the SoC back in march and so far the only phone with this chip that has released outside China is Poco F5.

Where are the competitors?

Does anyone else have this issue? When I search for specific text there are just no results if it’s too far back, maybe more than a few months? If I go into a convo and scroll past the text i’m looking for, the in-convo search will work, but that doesn’t make it very useful. I feel like it must be my phone or something because I don’t see how a bug this big could be in their flagship messaging app. Also taking suggestions on other RCS-compatible apps that aren’t dogshit.

I have been struggling a lot finding a wallpaper app on Android that simply lets me to have both online and local sources (merged) and automatically cycle between them in a specified time, I have tried all of the picture and many of them do this half good, I checked some FOSS apps and I think they are the best (no features locked for example, better UI and less crap).

From the ones listed in the picture I think Wall You is the best, it basically let me have the good things of both worlds, although not at the same time I think, and it has done some weird stuff with my local wallpapers, like miss placed them, not applied them correctly and sometimes only applying it in the home screen and not in the lock screen.

Doodle works fine although only from Google/their sources.

Wallme also allows local, but I could not get the Wallpaper changer to work at my specified time (3 hours) I think that menu is buggy, plus it's online sources comes from Reddit and I'd prefer to not use its API (although it seems a good candidate).

Muzei works fine for local sources and maybe for external because I think it is like plugin based? But I don't like that you can't customize how it applies the wallpapers and they are always miss placed because of the effect (that I don't know how is called).

The last two are some that I got from the Play Store ages ago and I had them installed, iWall only has its own stuff and it is not what I'm looking for and Walli I think it could do the job, although I am not sure, and I'd be willing to try some others before paying for it to unlock those extra features.

So, yeah in a nutshell finding the perfect wallpaper app for me has not been an easy task, do you have something in mind? Or do you think it is weird to want to have a mixed source? What do you recommend me?

For now I am using Doodle although I really would like one which supports both sources and cycle them!

I read you.

USB to HDMI not working? (lemmy.dbzer0.com)
submitted 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) by MacFearrs@lemmy.dbzer0.com to c/askandroid@lemdro.id

So the puppy has chewed my Mum's phone screen, stopping both the display AND touch sensor on half of it.

I'm trying to back up photos and contacts from internal storage. I've got a USB hub which I can connect a mouse to that seems to work, but the HDMI output from it isn't working. It's not showing as no signal though, it's connected with a completely black screen.

The phone has been turned off and I can't unlock it, so I'm wondering if this is a result of the system still being locked? If this is against the "no lock screen bypass help" rule, just let me know and I'll delete it.

The model of phone is a Huawei P30 Pro.

Any help would be appreciated

I've been using inoreader and decided to move to something local instead of cloud based. I found feeder and it is decent, but has one major annoyance for me. The "compact" view that gives you the title and a short blurb gives you uneven rows, and the other options (card and super compact) do not offer the same info.

Are there any other FOSS (or even just local, not cloud based, apps) that have what I'm looking for? I'm happy to pay a few bucks, I just don't want features locked behind a subscription.

I want to put solar panels on my roof, but there are some big trees (in my neighbor's yard) that shade my roof at various points throughout the day. I'm really not sure how much sun I get consistently.

I was thinking I could do something like take time-lapse pictures of my roof, perhaps once per hour, and collect that for both summer and winter.

I have a couple of old Android phones available. I was wondering if I could put one one a tree, facing my roof, and have it collect pictures periodically, unattended. I can get power to it, and it's within range of my WIFI.

Anyone done anything like this? Any recommendations on Android app or approach? (Or other ideas on assessing my roof solar coverage?) Thanks

Or hold it open while Bluetooth active and in use?

Would be extremely useful to have my screen stay open while phone is playing music in the car. Phone is a Samsung A31 running Android 12, although I have had the same issue on other devices running different versions of Android so not sure its relevant.
