It used to be common for foreign TV shows and movies to get localized titles, and dammit, I think that those titles had a lot of charm. So I'm bringing them back myself!

Some of these are "full" titles, some of these are more meant to be subtitles that come after the original title; some of these are more literal translations while others are more evocative and often groansome localizations; some of these are popular anime, some are less popular. Regardless, I hope I have at least achieved the aesthetic of an eyeroll-worthy second-hand video cassette box from Norway in the 1990s.

How many of these my favorite concoctions can you recognize? Maybe you can see a familiar name here or there, maybe a cognate, maybe that's not enough and you need to ask me to provide a translation/explanation/cognates. It'll be interesting to see how it goes.

So without further ado, break a leg:

  • Av to planeter og ett hjerte
  • Bestilte du en hare?
  • Celler i arbeid!
  • Drømmer ninjajenter om ninjamenn?
  • En brud i fem deler
  • Fandens nabojente
  • Forlovet til den ukjente
  • Hverdagsliv
  • Kjærlighet, direktesendt!
  • Kjærlighet, fjortis-syndrom og andre vrangforestillinger
  • Komis kommunikasjonsvansker
  • Min haleløs mester
  • Min "lutesøster" Umaru
  • MoRo-byrået
  • Pupper eller ei, kan jeg slå deg!
  • På lørdagsgodt og søndagsvondt
  • Retts-Saks-Papir
  • Senko med reverompa
  • Solskinn-skisse
  • Spøkelsesfortellinger
  • Stridsvogner kjørt i skjørt
  • Søtt uansett, eller, "Jeg elsker deg til månen og tilbake!"

I guess I'll reveal all the correct answers at the end of the day if they haven't all been guessed by then...

Edit:

Correct answers in order

  • Stardust Telepath
  • Is The Order a Rabbit?
  • Cells at Work!

This comes with some sad news, though. Apparently this is from a fireworks/drone show for the last day of the life-sized gundam robot in Yokohama, which is being taken down.

One can find a few things on Archive.org and Netflix, and one can find a few very short fan-made dubs (fandubs) on YouTube, but as a whole there isn't a lot that's easy to find. The Norwegian Dubs Wikia (Norske Dubber Wiki) has many anime that I can't find on any of the three aforementioned services.

But as said, even Norwegian subs is good enough for me. I just want to reduce my reliance on the English language, so that I can improve my Norwegian and improve my Japanese simultaneously. Of course, I could make the subtitles myself and share them, if nobody else has done this work already — I'm just scared that I'd make a lot of grammatical mistakes (according to other people, at least). If I had a proofreader this maybe wouldn't be a problem...

Like as far as writing quality in general, art, characters, etc it's all quite good, but the whole "dungeon ecology" stuff being retconned away with "actually it's all eldritch horror wish magic so all that monster ecology stuff is fake bullshit that doesn't matter" kind of sucked as a core plot point, as was downgrading the dungeon lord from "scary ancient mage who knew how to make such a big and complex dungeon" to "just some dumbass who didn't understand the most basic things, and it was all just eldritch horror wish magic doing the heavy lifting." Making a core point of the wish magic "greed and cruelty are harmless and normal, but wanting to improve the material conditions of others? That's a serious moral hazard that feeds a world eating demon!" is some peak liberal bullshit, too.

Also I hate the narrative device of "this arc has reached it's climax and finished and we've wound it all down now, time to move on to the next-PSYCH lmao I take it back it's not done I'm undoing it now it's still on we're still doing the thing that just finished lol" because it's lazy and ruins tension and pacing compared to just finding some better way to segue into a new arc. Especially since it doesn't even really do much of anything with the retcon, and it was practically just an excuse to get rid of the timer they had and replace it with a different one they didn't know about.

Apart from those things it was all good enough, though.

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, the people demanded more Sailor Moon, and so, we’re continuing on, with episodes 73 through 78 of the 1992 series, the definitive magical-girl anime. This is the completely unabridged, unexpurgated, uncensored, Japanese version of the show, including everything that the English dub butchered, altered, and/or cut, which is quite a bit. Tonight’s episodes see the continuation of the Black Moon Clan arc, including a two-part showdown with clan ringleader Rubeus, and the debut of Sailor Pluto.

After that is Alice (1988), a Czech stop-motion fairy tale that asks, “What if Alice in Wonderland was a little…twisted?” It reimagines the tale into a creepy dark fantasy full of unsettling imagery (though nothing R-rated) and spooky situations. It is generally considered the magnum opus of animator Jan Svankmajer, and is his best-known work, as well as one of the most famous animated films from the Eastern Bloc.

We’ll start 8PM EST on Hextube, right here: https://live.hexbear.net/c/movies

Be there, comrades!

Like the way its structured to start with is the extremely tight view that drives home that all these other characters have their own lives and existence but you only ever the few bits when Frieren's around and then they're gone, while the pacing keeps up this constant feeling of time slipping inexorably away and being lost forever. It hits hard and is structured perfectly for those themes.

Then it hits a point where the story shatters into a bunch of separate threads and grinds to a complete halt in the way that stories that split into a bunch of threads inevitably do. It loses the tight focus and the feeling of "yes, these characters have their own existence but you only interact that during the moments you're actually there" sort of thing in favor of just showing you a blow by blow of everything that's going on with them, and instead of time slipping away no matter how hard you hold onto it it instead stands completely still.

It stops being unique and impactful and starts being "that annoying thing from BNHA where they spend like half an entire season going into excruciating detail about some little training exercise with mild competitive elements that every single member of a huge cast is participating in" instead.

This song is somehow simultaneously paint-by-numbers generic anisong #136 and a total banger. Been jamming to it ever since the anime started airing and the full versions just dropped today to coincide with the final episode of the anime!

Honestly, paint-by-numbers is a little harsh; I think it sounds like that at first blush since it doesn't do anything particularly innovative—Cry Baby, it's not (there are English subs!)—but it's well-written and blends a lot of typical J-pop tropes in just the right way such that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. I love that they did a bunch of different versions--the piano one really allows you to appreciate the voice leading, while the acoustic guitar one emphasizes the rhythmic elements. Maybe it's just because it executes something really well that I'm a sucker for: taking the same melody and recontextualizing it by changing the underlying harmony (the first melodic motif in the chorus is repeated three times, and each time it gets different chord changes!). And the hook is such an earworm:

♫ MAGICAL LOVE, BE WITH YOU! ♪

I'm disappointed that there's no good flyby shots of Getter Robo Black near the WTC - so I don't have a second-plane a second Getter Robo has struck the towers pic.

The ruins of NYC do get wrecked to take down some kaiju.
