Too many perfectly usable phones are put into a questionable security situation by lack of vendor support for keeping key software up to date.

But what's the actual risk of using an Android phone on a stock ROM without updates? What's the attack surface?

It seems like most things that'd contact potentially malicious software are web and messaging software, but that's all done by apps which continue to receive updates (at least until the android version is entirely unsupported) eg. Webview, Firefox, Signal, etc.

So are the main avenues for attack then sketchy apps and wifi points? If one is careful to use a minimal set of widely scrutinised apps and avoid connecting to wifi/bluetooth/etc. devices of questionable provenance is it really taking that much of a risk to continue using a device past EOL?

Or do browsers rely on system libraries that have plausible attack vectors? Perhaps images, video, font etc. rendering could be compromised? At this point though, that stack must be quite hardened and mature, it'd be major news for libjpg/ffmpeg to have a code-execution vulnerability? Plus it seems unlikely that they wouldn't just include this in webview/Firefox as there must surely be millions of devices in this situation so why not take the easy step of distributing a bit more in the APK?

I'm not at all an Android developer though, perhaps this is very naive and I'm missing something major?

Until recently, when I took a screenshot with my #pixel it showed a direct share target which was usually the most recent person I shared to. Now, it's got no one. How do I fix that?

6a latest updates including security patches. I’ve experienced a few really frustrating bugs and would like the communities help to figure out possible causes or solutions.

  1. Google assistant crashes after the trigger phrase is said.

Solution: google app clear cache and data

  1. Alarms quick tile is not showing the next alarm, but is showing the next due date/time associated with a task in Microsoft to-do. Clicking the tile opens Microsoft todo to the task. This occurs even though the next alarm is before this tasks due date/time.

Why isn’t the tile opening the clock/alarm app?!?!?!?

Solution: ?? Help ??

  1. Poor modem reception for lte/5g networks. Sitting in the car, Girlfriends iPhone had strong 5g, pixel kept dropping network and not operating voice or data. Restarts didn’t work.

Solution: ?? Help ??

I deleted a Gallery app from my Samsung tablet and found out I cannot change the DeX wallpaper anymore (the Settings app says "The required app not found"). Other gallery apps don't help, and the official one is available neither in Google Play nor in Galaxy Store. Is there any other way to change the wallpaper without the Samsung Gallery app? And please don't tell me about doing a factory reset. Thanks an advance.

Reason for posting this question - my laptop battery died and it turns out the bios gets reset every time I turn it on now.

Made me think of the old phones I have which cannot be repurposed without getting new batteries..

I guess mandating replaceable batteries is enough but IMHO it should go further

Is there some kind of website that has a database of whether or not an app would require Google Play Services to function? I remember using just such a website a few weeks ago, but I don't remember its name. It has a search box where one enters the app name and it will tell you whether or not that app relies on Google Play Services.

Thanks to HertzDevil
you can now natively install @CrystalLanguage on your @android device's #Termux.

Before you had to use #asdf or @homebrew for that.

It's all free (if you make it yourself) and open source.

A while ago I made an app for tracking baby activities because I became a parent and was horrified at how many permissions the existing apps required and how much tracking they contained. Both the app and the server are open source.

This is a web-app which also has an Android version in the Play Store (F-Droid didn't accept it because they don't feel like web-apps should be welcome in their store). On iPhones it can be installed as a PWA to the home screen.

Features:

  • No tracking whatsoever
  • End-to-end encrypted, no personal information is stored on the server unencrypted
  • Track baby's feeding, diaper changes, breast pumping and sleeping (more to come)

Come on Google you can do it. I can't wait to try them out!

It came as an update, and I installed it without thinking. I did see the size before launching thankfully and uninstalled - how screwed am I?

I'm looking for recommendations on phones that are similar to the Xiaomi Mi 9T and are likely to receive Lineage OS updates for many years after their launch. I'm seeking models with large screen-to-body ratio, pop-up selfie camera, 3.5mm audio jack, and a removable battery. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or insights from the community. Thank you in advance!

Summary of what's new in Android 14 Beta 4 (build number UPB4.230623.005):

  • Expanded availability to Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet

  • New Easter egg. To activate the Easter egg, open Settings > About Phone > Android version and repeatedly tap on “Android version” until you see the Android 14 logo floating in space. Hold down on the logo and you’ll see the “stars” speed by.

  • New SystemUI icon

  • New status bar icon for "mute"/"silent" mode

  • "Speech" settings moved from Settings > System > Keyboard to Settings > System > Languages

  • "Auto-confirm unlock" toggle has been added to Settings > Device unlock > Screen lock. This feature unlocks your phone automatically when you enter your PIN correctly. Your PIN must be 6 digits or more to enable this.

  • Under Settings > About phone > Model, you can now see your phone’s “manufactured year”. This is derived from your device's serial number.

  • The “ring volume” and “notification volume” sliders are now completely separated in Android 14, with no way to merge them again. In older betas, the separation was controlled by a DeviceConfig flag, but that flag’s no longer in use.

  • Lock screen clocks are now enabled on the Pixel 4a 5G, Pixel 5, Pixel 5a 5G, and Pixel Fold, but not the Pixel Tablet.

  • New default profile picture options

  • The Settings app references a new “speed boost” toggle in SIM settings. I’m not sure what it’ll do yet, as it launches an activity in Adaptive Connectivity Services that doesn’t exist yet in Beta 4. Interestingly, the feature is explicitly disabled for Spectrum mobile.

Ive been trying to find some new interesting apps on the playstore but the problem is that I cant find anything that wasnt paid to show up first on the lists. I know already about F-droid.

I've seen a few other terminal emulators floating around different app stores - has anyone tried these, and found that they were actually better than Termux?

Would love to check out any recommendations!

I was hoping for Google to change the ugly new dropdown quick settings toggle buttons so they look more like the old ones, but no changes to that :(

Is there an Android ROM that has the ability to provide the app with fake camera stream, location, microphone stream, gallery, storage files etc...?

It would be incredibly useful to allow apps to work while giving no info / no access to private informations / permissions.
