Utopia (from Ουτοπία) is an impossible Vision of the future, while Evtopia (from Ευτοπία) is the best possible Vision.

Social media platforms need a lot of computing and storage power provided by energy-hungry data centres that constantly have to upgrade their hardware, spitting out vast amounts of e-waste. This is particularly true of commercial platforms with their ML-driven ad systems. The fall of Twitter and Reddit would be beneficial in that regard.

But what about Fediverse systems? The link discusses Mastodon, but that's only one example. Would it be possible to host Lemmy instances in a sustainable way? With solar power? And what would it imply, materially and socially?

I have resources like the Low-Tech Magazine in mind, which uses solar power to host a website. The downtime is part of the adventure. Or we'd have to deploy a solar protocol to use the earth's rotation creatively and for cooperation.

to anyone who’s set up or been a part of community initiatives to fix the world, how did you get started? how’s it going now?

TL;DR

using/generating energy always emits heat as waste and there is an upper limit of efficiency that we are not that far from. if that energy was generated via something that is not a natural heat gradient for the earth's surface there is a net increase of heat in the earth system simply by generating and using energy.

a lot of energy sources fall into this: fossil fuel, nuclear, geothermal, etc. two that don't are (certain types of) solar and wind, since their energy would eventually be dissipated onto earth's surface whether we intercept or not.

that waste heat is currently estimated to be ~2% of the heating power caused by global warming, so already significant. we essentially have an upper limit on sustainable energy usage on earth (and therefore an avg per person usage) or we will have Global Warming 2: Waste Heat Boogaloo.

I'm a Science Fiction fan. I've read a fair amount about what Solarpunk is ideologically, looked at inspo albums, and things like that, but I haven't yet read any works of Solarpunk fiction.

What are a few of the works of Solarpunk fiction that you feel best represent Solarpunk, or showcase its literary possibilities? Whether that's more from a writing quality standpoint or an entertainment standpoint, I'm not picky.

For any who missed it - there's a solarpunk conference being held this Saturday, starting 8:30MST. Their agenda has speakers on everything from art and writing to hydroponics and hacktivism. Today's the last day to grab tickets if you want to attend!

Hello! My name is soldan, I'm a hacktivist in the Cybercirujas group, a group of hacktivists and free software activists who fight against programmed obsolescence, the digital divide and the data oligarchy.

I would like to know if we can create a community in this instance of lemmy, it is very much in line with our political program. But we are a group from Argentina and South America, would it be a problem to have a community in Spanish? Thanks in advance.

You can find information about cybercirujas in cyberspace :)

Greetings!

What's everyone's thoughts on using space-based solar power to help solve the climate crisis?

Now that we're hitting the 1.5 degree mark, I notice a lot of news articles coming out in favor of such things, but I want to know how you think of it.

...but I think I'd probably be miserable there.

I'm violently allergic to pollen, am terrified of bees, wasps, and grasshoppers, and generally despise bugs and dirt. My ideal world would see everything paved in marble. No cars, (obviously) with a quiet, sustainable, walkable communiy, but green, as beautiful as it is, causes me a great deal of pain.

It's there any place for me in a solarpunk world?

I've seen this site posted around here before, but adding a direct link here. The knowledge base is interesting to read though, and reading the difficulties of a tech focused life with minimal resources.

A while ago I set myself a task, to build out a vision for the future that I have been slowly crafting within my imagination. Through this process I've found many similarities with my own path and that of the solarpunk community. In so, I decided to start a blog where I can compile my worldbuilding notes, encourage myself to write more, and facilitate regarding topics of what a solarpunk future actually looks like.

Solarium - Post Food Scarcity

Post Food Scarcity is the latest topic that I have explored. Taking a look into what a functional future looks like when we no longer have to worry about procuring food as a means of survival. Would love to hear other's thoughts on this subject!

Trying to add content on a regular basis, mainly to form good writing habits, but also to keep the flow of creative juices well.... flowing. Giving that the r/solarpunk is under black out, I'm not really too sure of other good places to share my ideas. If anyone would be willing to point me in a good direction when it comes to sharing content, I would be most appreciative!!

In any ways, thanks for allowing me to take up some of your time and hope you have a great day!!

HI, I'm Lizzy. I'm a mechanical engineering student at UNLV. I'm between classes right now so I'm all of my productive energy into networking with activists across the valley. I consider myself a representative of the Las Vegas Solarpunk community. My main fixations are housing, because I get homesick too easy, and bicycles.

Las Vegas is a battleground of classes, there are golf courses and casinoes built, meters away from the storm drains where the poorest of the poor take refuge. But we do have some grassroots activism: Food/water shares, makerspaces, queer spaces. There are a few scattered community gardens even! So we clearly do have all the technology needed to abolish work and move to a solarpunk future, it just needs to be scaled up. Oh and I've had zero luck so far finding people who are fixated on taking housing off the private market.

I hope to network with others in Las Vegas, and in other cities! What cities are y'all from? What are your fixations? Does your city have more developed mutual aid networks? (probably lol)

It's not a new video or anything, but I didn't see it posted in this community before, and I think it's a really worthwhile, multifaceted video. Since there are a bunch of folks coming over from reddit (myself included), I thought maybe I'd share it here in case anyone hadn't seen it yet.
