Studies toward a sustainable future conducted by international organizations uniformly agree about having to change some of our present consumer behaviors. Regarding food, suggestions include eating locally farmed, less industrialized and renewable food to promote health and circularity, and limiting waste. Jellyfish are frequently sorted and discarded after being caught with fish in fishing nets and gear. In contrast, we propose utilizing this by-catch as food. This review discusses the economic value and sustainability of jellyfish, the technologies used to prepare them for human consumption, their nutritional profile and health impacts and, finally, consumer acceptability and sensory evaluation of jellyfish food products. This discussion is critical for promoting jellyfish as an important aquatic resource to support blue and circular economies.

Wood Wide Web: Already a term in biology. "Research has shown that beneath every forest and wood there is a complex underground web of roots, fungi and bacteria helping to connect trees and plants to one another. This subterranean social network, nearly 500 million years old, has become known as the "wood wide web"." (BBC)

Fungiverse: Most similar to the term fediverse though I never understood the "universe" part of the term. What does it mean in this context? Its more a social network, right? Much more like the internet it is based on a certain protocol.

Fungal/Fungi Web: Shorter than Wood Wide Web and maybe easier to say. In contrast to Wood Wide Web, maybe it's also better to not confuse tech and nature here. I also in general like the term "social web" more, because it emphasizes that it is basically going on top of the usual web just through a new protocol.

I think Wood Wide Web would be best, because it could emphasize that it should be energy-efficient and have the goal of connecting people to collaborate toward a sustainable future. Also: in a story that plays in a world in which humanoid plants live, it would just make sense that they discover the Wood Wide Web at some point. What do you think?

I posted one of my stories here and got as reply that it was bio-punk, because it introduced the Fediverse as a fungi-network.

Now my question is: how should it be depicted in a solarpunk world, especially if it should be understandable to readers from centralized social networks without too much explanation (ideally none). If thought fungal networks would be the perfect metaphor here. Would love to hear some feedback on this.

Fedipunk is a sub-genre of Solarpunk, which embraces dezentralized social networks. You can read more about it here: https://rant.li/2hzlaqp5q4

Lamella on my Mind aims to promote the idea of the Fediverse in a Solarpunk world by introducing it as a network developed by humanoid Fungis.

Hi, I'm currently at an eco-village, and had a discussion about washing dishes per hand vs using a dishwasher. I was not completely sure, but have read somewhere, that a dishwasher is more efficient (in terms of energy and water usage). I just fact-checked that and indeed, when not being super careful by handwashing (no running water, using very little detergent, rather cold water etc.), a dishwasher is more efficient.

I think it would be super useful to have a dense wiki for stuff like this for everyday life, because it's so easy to think that something different is more efficient. Because at first thought it doesn't sound immediately intuitive.

Does anybody know if there's something like this? And if not, it probably makes sense to start a wiki like that.

So I have noticed from reading through posts and my own research that there isn't much information on how mental health and psychology would be taken care of and implemented. I could very well be wrong and would appreciate anyone's pointing me to an initial resource in order to understand more. And if it hasn't been confronted as a problem, I would like to ruminate with others on what those possibilities could look like. We can't eschew mental health.

I was shocked to see that there are no English-language Mobilizon servers. It seems like it may be an ideal secondary service for certain existing fediverse communities (particularly those where we need to be getting organized) and was wondering if anybody here had considered it.

For those unaware, Mobilizon looks to fill the role of something like Facebook groups for the fediverse. I believe it is compatible with both Mastodon and Lemmy through the groups actor in the ActivityPub spec but provides additional functionality dealing with scheduled events and shared resources.

Wow that circuit board is so evocative, with such a clear and apparent link to Native American heritage. How cool would a Solarpunk story be about this?

cross-posted from: https://slrpnk.net/post/3103720

Excerpts:

Not only was the first female engineer at Lockheed and NASA(1) a citizen of The Cherokee Nation, a Native American Tribe, but she -Mary Golda Ross- was a pioneer and founding member of the renowned and highly secretive Skunk Works project at Lockheed Corporation...

Like Jerry Chris Elliott High Eagle, one of the first Native Americans who worked at NASA. He’s best known as the lead retrofire officer during Apollo 13, where his actions saved the lives of the 3 astronauts & earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom...

Then there’s Dr. Fred Begay/Young of the Los Alamos National Laboratory & part of a NASA-funded space physics research team on the origin of high energy gamma rays and solar neutrons in the 1960’s & 70’s...

And speaking of Navajo innovation, if you have ever wondered why computer circuits resemble Navajo weaving patterns then you will not be surprised to learn that this is not a coincidence but is in fact by intentional Navajo design. As one scholar put it upon discovering the connection “ I had no idea that indigenous people in the U.S. had played such an important role in the early history of computing devices.

This is a good introductory article for Solarpunk. If someone asks you "What is Solarpunk?" this is a good place to start.

I've been thinking about Solarpunk spiritualities/philosophies. Not gonna use the word religion here to avoid the negative connotations of that.

I've been practicing druidism way before I ever discovered solarpunk, and I feel like the two are very compatible with each other. Love of nature, do no harm to others, fluid and evolving, open to interpretation.

Any other ideas about already existing spiritual philosophies that are compatible with solarpunk?
