Most people have extremely weird ideas of what's considered piracy and what isn't. Downloading a video game rom is piracy, but if you pay money to some Chinese retailer for an SD card containing the roms, that's somehow not piracy. Exploiting the free trial on a streaming site by using prepaid visa cards is somehow not piracy either. Torrenting an album is piracy, but listening to a bootleg on YouTube isn't.

YouTube noticed this at some point and is now happy to let everyone know how much pirated music is available on their site. One of their main points for shilling YouTube premium is how their music catalogue is way better than Spotify. Of course the piracy site has more. That's always how it works. Spotify actually has to license the music on their platform and is subject to copyright law. They can't just get the Neil Young discography from soulseek one day and wait until his estate notices, facing no repercussions whatsoever aside from agreeing to a takedown request. Imagine if Pirate Bay or Napster were considered completely above-board businesses just because they took down torrents if explicitly requested by the copyright holders.

Not that I'm complaining especially when a lot of the music on youtube isn't publicly accessible anywhere else. It's just been extremely strange to see this go from an "open secret" to something they're shouting from the rooftops and face no repercussions for. In the future I want everything to be like that and I'd rather keep youtube how it is than see them get the punishment that by all rights they should be getting. It's just so strange that this is the position things have ended up in.

I assume there's some historical reason for this, but currently, the way scene releases reach most people seems to consist of:

  1. Sites that track releases post the nfo file of the release; these sites generally don't provide the release itself.

  2. People then look for the release via various channels and download it.

Wouldn't it make sense for the nfo to contain the checksum of the actual release, letting pirates verify unmodified copies of it and making it easier to avoid versions that have been modified in various ways?

Obviously you'd still have to trust both the site where you got the NFO (and therefore the checksum) and the people who made the original release, but those are usually relatively trustworthy, being known people who have handled a lot of releases with no problems - a lot of the danger of viruses and the like in software piracy comes from the risk of middlemen adding something.

I have transmission running on my server in a docker container that is supposed to go through gluetun. If I run test with ipleak and other torrent ip testers it shows my vpn's ip address. However transmission is running way faster download speeds than deluge or qbit were with the same configuration. It makes me wonder if all the traffic isn't going through the vpn somehow and I can't think of any other way to check things other than ipleak tests. I'm probably being over paranoid but a few months ago qbit leaked and I got a letter from my isp. I really don't need that happening again. Any help would be appreciated.

I am trying to finally move from entirely depending on Google Photos to a proper backup strategy. I have my photos and videos downloaded from Google which are a mess right now but as long they're with me I am fine, at least for now.

So, what I have planned is 3 way backup with Mega Drive-Google Photos- Local storage. Local storage, I will start off with storing on a pendrive and my router has a usb port so will make use of it for time being.

I know my way of doing things is noobish for a piracy community (and in general too, I am kinda embarrassed as well sharing this "strategy" of mine). Hence I'm asking for suggestions to improve my strategy. Yeah, in the future I will move to HDDs and NAS but for time being I am starting out this way.

So how do you manage your personal media? Are there any noob-friendly tools/techniques you know which drastically improve my strategy?

I've been looking for a digital copy of Kronecker Wallis' text, "Euclid's Elements", on the major sites (AA, ZL, LG, VK, IRC, Scribd, Mobilism, rutracker, Ocean of PDF, etc.) but they've all come up empty.

A lot of the books I usually look for can't be found on the major sites and while I've made a few (several) book requests on Z-Library, it may take months or years for those to come to fruition.

How do you all find more obscure/niche books or newer texts? The book in question costs £200 excluding shipping, so buying it isn't in my 2023-2024 budget. There are also a ton of books from the Library of Congress I'd LOVE to have uploaded eventually, but that's easier said than done.

Are there sites/trackers dedicated towards making digital scans of physical books (like the Internet Archive)?

Thank you!

So there is this app claiming on-device iMessage functionality on Android. Seems cool but only has subscription based pricing. Does anyone know of a way to circumvent this?

Edit: I found this but it seems a bit dodgy

Hey everyone,

I'm currently stuck between deciding whether to go for a 1080p REMUX or a 2160p REMUX and could really use some guidance here.

My laptop specs are as follows: I'm running Arch Linux with dwm (Xorg) and have configured MPV with hardware acceleration. Just to give you an idea:

- Screen Resolution: 3200x2000

- CPU: 11th Gen Intel i5-11300H (8) @ 4.400GHz

- GPU: Intel TigerLake-LP GT2 [Iris Xe Graphics]

Well, i decided to brush up my simple HTML page and created a fully linked wiki on the subject. Please take a look, in the hope it will be useful for at least one fellow one-eyed leg-pegged passionate data hoarder.

Any hints or suggestions is appreciated.

None of the documentaries from GCN+, which is Global Cycling Network's streaming app, are on my usual torrent sites. I'm not a cool warez kiddy with access to niche private trackers. Is it possible that there are no webrips out there? Do they watermark somehow?

Noob question: When looking at the Seeds and Peers columns of qBittorrent, there are two numbers: one of which is outside the parenthesis and one is inside the parenthesis. Ex 0 (5).

What is the difference between the two numbers in each column?

Hi guys,

I was wondering how people who upload first webdl/webrip/etc movies/tvshows rip the video file.. Is there any "official guide" how to? Some rips have HDR and DV so how they get these metadata cause I assume that just screen recording won't get it.

What do the Lemmy pirates say about this site?

I want to download the game "The Godfather" from 2006, but upon trying to open the setup file my computer screen turned all black. Is it likely to get a virus from this site?

Ahoy Mateys ! I am a big fan of watching soccer (or football), and usually I would just turn on my PC, look for reddit soccer stream, and watch thus way. However, I recently invested in an Nvidia shield (the stick), and was wondering if there was a way for me to watch the games directly on it, without turning on my PC? I already have a VPN, and use Jellyfin as well. Thank you in advance !

Can anyone point me in the direction of a list of parts for the rp2040 mod chip? I got one of the blue pcb ones without the ribbon cables and I need to know the sizes of resistors and mosfet. I know it's the surface mount ones. And also is there any other parts I need that I didn't mention? Thanks for the help in advance

Theres been a lot of really amazing looking animated films by indie studios in china but sadly some of them are exclusively available to chinese viewers via geoblocking. Anyone here able to download and share them?

These are anthologies with many indie studios making different episodes.

Here is the link that shows from the first seasons information https://www.catsuka.com/news/2022-09-20/capsules-project-omnibus-chinois-de-14-court-metrages-produit-par-bilibili-avec-des-studios-indes

I ripped a mixcloud stream using a great free MediaHuman app (Youtube to Mp3). I now need to rip the desired 6 minute song (in m4a format) from a 2 hour stream. The trouble is: I can't seem to find a decent app to do it.

I tried using a couple of online apps but the file was too large to upload, and I can't seem to find a decent app to use for my iMac anymore.

Do you know of an easy-to-use and/or free music trimmer/cutter app?

thanks

Well hello there, I'm diving into the *arr suite of things currently and am trying to setup everything to my usecase. I think I mostly already understood, how a single quality profile works within itself, like upgrading quality and so on. But what I didn't get yet, why would I want multiple different quality profiles to exist?

I mostly am having this priority list:

  • BluRay 1080p
  • Any 1080p
  • Any <1080p

Would there be a difference of having these three as separate quality profiles or having them within one quality profile? What's the preferred way there (if that's not just dependant on the usecase)?
